Overview

Brands can award points for purchases, referrals, reviews, account creation, birthdays and social follows, then offer free products, discount vouchers or free delivery in return. That range can support more than purchase-based incentives, but it also asks a store to decide which customer actions matter and which rewards are compelling enough to encourage them.

VIP tiers give brands another way to recognize customer engagement and spending. Real-time loyalty data and customer buying behavior can help teams evaluate and refine a program, while lifecycle automation and a customer portal extend it beyond points and redemption. Those capabilities are most useful to a business willing to keep its program active and relevant.

Key features

Points and rewards: Multiple earning activities and redemption choices give a brand flexibility to shape customer behavior. Stores still need to set clear rules and ensure the rewards justify participation.
VIP tiers: Different benefits can give returning customers a reason to engage and spend more. This is more valuable to stores with enough repeat business to make tier distinctions meaningful.
Referrals and lifecycle automation: Referral programs and lifecycle automation broaden the program beyond rewarding purchases, giving teams more ways to engage customers over time.
Analytics: Real-time access to loyalty data and buying behavior can support program evaluation and adjustment; it is particularly relevant to teams that will use the data to make decisions.
Integrations and API: The integration directory includes Klaviyo, Attentive, Gorgias, Mailchimp, Dotdigital and HubSpot. A Headless API supports customized loyalty experiences across channels, which gives implementation flexibility but is less important to a store seeking a simple, standard setup.
Security and support: LoyaltyLion states that it holds a SOC 2 Type I attestation covering security, processing integrity, availability, confidentiality and privacy. All plan levels can access the Support team, with dedicated onboarding and fast live chat and email support listed on the pricing page.

Pricing

LoyaltyLion uses a freemium model, with a 14-day free trial available through the Shopify Appstore. The threshold-based plans make monthly order volume central to the decision.

Free — free: Recommended for stores processing 400 orders or fewer per month. It is a no-cost way to start, but stores approaching or exceeding that volume should consider whether the paid allowance better fits their order activity.
Classic — 199.00 USD per month: Billed every 30 days and includes 500 orders per month. It gives a growing Shopify store a defined allowance and price, but the jump from the free plan makes it a poor fit for a store that does not need the larger threshold.
Advanced — custom pricing: Adds VIP tiers, Shopify POS across multiple locations and support for 130+ languages. It suits businesses needing a more extensive or multi-location setup, though the custom price requires a direct comparison against their needs.
Plus — custom pricing: Includes AI recommended campaigns, automated LoyaltyLion Flows and quarterly reviews on request. It is aimed at teams seeking more campaign automation and review support, rather than stores that only need core points and rewards.

Existing customers whose average monthly orders exceed their contracted threshold by more than 25% for three consecutive months may be contacted to discuss their plan or threshold. That makes sustained growth a reason to revisit the allowance, not just a short-term order spike.

Platforms

LoyaltyLion supports web and API use and is built exclusively for Shopify, with support for Shopify, Shopify Plus and Shopify POS. That focus is an advantage for Shopify merchants, but makes it a poor match for a business building its commerce operation around another platform. Shopify POS across multiple locations is included with Advanced.

Who it's for

LoyaltyLion fits Shopify stores that want to combine points, referrals, rewards and VIP tiers, and have a team prepared to manage those elements. Its analytics and integration options can also suit brands connecting loyalty activity to marketing and customer-support platforms. Stores seeking a lightweight, low-cost scheme or operating outside Shopify have less reason to choose it.

Pros and cons

Pro: Earning points through purchases, referrals, reviews and other activities supports engagement beyond transactions.
Pro: VIP tiers, lifecycle automation, a customer portal and real-time program data cover more of the loyalty lifecycle than reward redemption alone.
Pro: Shopify focus, a Headless API and a broad integration directory give Shopify-centered teams multiple ways to connect or customize the experience.
Con: Classic costs 199.00 USD per month for 500 monthly orders, a material commitment for smaller stores compared with the free plan.
Con: Advanced and Plus have custom pricing, so businesses needing their added capabilities must seek pricing before assessing the full cost.
Con: The Shopify-only focus rules it out for stores using a different commerce platform.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse Loyalty Program Software.

meed is worth considering for a loyalty program spanning Android, iOS and web, particularly if its free plan for up to 50 members is a better starting point than LoyaltyLion's order-based free plan.
Smile.io offers a free plan with 200 monthly orders, points and referrals, discounts and free-shipping rewards, making it a relevant alternative for a Shopify store with a smaller order volume and simpler reward needs.
Loyalty Gator is an alternative with Android, iOS, API and web support for businesses considering a platform beyond LoyaltyLion's Shopify focus.
Yotpo Loyalty has a free plan with a basic points campaign and referrals, which may suit a store seeking a more limited starting feature set.
Oracle Retail Xstore Point-of-Service is an alternative for retailers considering a point-of-service platform across a wider range of operating systems.
Comarch Accounts Payable Automation is another paid platform to consider.
Simplicity Loyalty is another paid loyalty platform to consider.
Annex Cloud Loyalty Experience Platform is another paid loyalty platform to consider.

Verdict

Choose LoyaltyLion if your store runs on Shopify and you want a structured loyalty program combining points, referrals, VIP benefits and program data. Its strongest case is the breadth of the program and its Shopify-oriented integrations; its clearest drawback is the 199.00 USD per month Classic plan once the free plan no longer fits. Stores outside Shopify or those seeking a simpler, lower-cost program should compare alternatives first.
