Overview

Email shares an account with a cloud drive, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes. That breadth can replace several separate everyday tools, but it is less compelling if you only need a mailbox. The independent, owner-managed company is based in Bayreuth, Germany, and was founded in 2003.

Security is a central strength: eclipso supports OpenPGP and S/MIME encryption and digital signatures, alongside TLS 1.3, DKIM, DMARC, SPF, HSTS and perfect forward secrecy. Integrated two-factor authentication, trainable spam filtering, personal spam rules and multi-stage antivirus scanning add practical safeguards. The company says it hosts all data exclusively in German data centers under German and EU GDPR law.

Key features

Mail can be managed in the web app, eclipso app, Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird or Apple Mail. POP3, SMTP and IMAP support mail access; CalDAV and CardDAV cover calendar and contact synchronization. WebDAV is available on Premium and Business, making those tiers more suitable when file access through that protocol matters.

The free iPhone, iPad and Android app brings email, calendar, contacts and Drive together, with PGP, PIN protection, dark mode and push notifications. The free PC and Mac Toolbox adds mail notifications, inbox and compose shortcuts, Drive synchronization, and SMS and fax access. These companion tools extend access beyond the web app, although the desktop features are a toolbox rather than a separate full mail client.

Pricing

Freemail is free, has no minimum contract period and can be cancelled anytime. It includes 4 GB storage, one email address and no aliases. Its 25-email daily sending limit and advertising in newsletters, banners and an email footer make it best for light personal use, not frequent sending.

Connect costs 1.49 EUR per month, with a minimum 12-month booking period and payment in advance. It raises storage to 20 GB and provides 11 email addresses and 10 aliases; its daily sending limit is 250. This is the lowest-cost paid option for users who need more addresses or fewer restrictions, but the annual commitment is a meaningful step up from free.

Premium costs 2.99 EUR per month on the same 12-month, prepaid, non-recurring-payment terms. It includes 40 GB, 25 email addresses, 24 aliases and 200 credits per month, with a 500-email daily limit. WebDAV access and a maximum four-hour support response time on business days during support hours make it the stronger fit for people needing those capabilities.

Business costs 5.99 EUR per month, prepaid for at least 12 months, and includes 100 GB, 51 email addresses, 50 aliases and one mail domain. It allows 5,000 emails per day and sending to up to 3,000 recipients, with distribution lists, CalDAV/CardDAV, WebDAV, German server location and a GDPR Article 28 data-processing agreement. For organizational use, those domain and compliance provisions distinguish it from the personal tiers; support response time is at most four hours during business-day support hours.

Paid plans do not auto-renew and end automatically unless extended. An email reminder arrives 14 days before expiration. For extra capacity, MailSpace +25 GB costs 69.00 EUR per once, +50 GB costs 129.00 EUR per once, and +100 GB costs 199.00 EUR per once; each is a single payment with no follow-up costs, lifetime runtime and compatibility with any plan.

Platforms

eclipso supports Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows. The mobile app and desktop Toolbox add platform-specific conveniences, while common mail clients and standard mail protocols allow users to keep their preferred client. Custom domains are not supported outside the Business plan’s one mail domain.

Who it's for

Choose eclipso if you want mail, storage and organizer tools under one login, need encryption options, or prefer a service that says its data stays in German data centers. Freemail suits low-volume use; Connect and Premium offer more capacity and addresses for personal users. Business is the clearest fit for organizations that need a domain, higher sending limits, distribution lists and a data-processing agreement. Look elsewhere if you need a custom domain on an inexpensive personal tier or do not want to prepay for a year.

Pros and cons

Pro: OpenPGP and S/MIME, digital signatures and a broad set of transport and domain protections support privacy-conscious communication.
Pro: Calendar, contacts, tasks, notes and Drive sit alongside email, with desktop and mobile companion tools.
Pro: Business includes a mail domain, high sending limits and a GDPR Article 28 data-processing agreement.
Con: Freemail includes advertising and caps sending at 25 emails per day.
Con: Paid plans require advance payment for a minimum of 12 months, even though they do not automatically renew.
Con: Custom domains are confined to Business, limiting lower-tier suitability for users who want a personal domain.

Alternatives

Aster Mail is worth considering if open-source software or a free plan with 10 GB storage, five aliases and one custom domain matters more than eclipso’s organizer bundle.

Proton Mail is an alternative freemium provider with apps across web, desktop and mobile; its Proton Free plan includes 1 GB storage and one email address.

Tuta Mail offers a free plan with 1 GB storage, one calendar, three labels and end-to-end encryption, and may suit users who prioritize that simpler free package.

OwnMail is another freemium email option with a free trial and Android, iOS and web support.

Disroot Email is a free alternative with webmail and IMAP, SMTP, SMTPS and POP support.

EPRIVO is a paid alternative with a free trial and apps for mobile, desktop and web.

Mailo offers a free plan with email and document/photo storage, aliases and IMAP4 and EAS access.

Neir has a free plan with webmail encrypted to your key and random aliases.

Verdict

eclipso Mail Europe is a sound choice for people who want encrypted email alongside storage and everyday organizer tools, especially if German hosting matters. Business has a particularly clear case for teams needing a domain and data-processing agreement. The main reasons to look elsewhere are Freemail’s ads and low sending ceiling, or the paid plans’ year-long prepaid commitment.
