Overview

Elasticsearch is the distributed, JSON-based search and analytics engine at the stack’s center. Kibana adds dashboards, visualizations, live presentations, and deployment management; Elastic Agent, Beats, Logstash, and a web crawler bring in data from applications, infrastructure, and public content. Together, these components support centralized logging, monitoring, and security analytics.

Elasticsearch and Kibana have an open-source foundation, and Elasticsearch can be downloaded and started for free. Teams can run the software locally, in Kubernetes, or with custom orchestration, or use hosted Elastic Cloud on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. That flexibility accommodates different infrastructure needs, but self-management also means taking responsibility for operating the stack. See our Log Management Software list for more options.

Key features

ELK Stack is more than a log store: it supports structured parsing, log pipelines, live tailing, and archive export, with a stated log-retention period of 30. Clustering and high availability, cross-cluster search, vector search, machine learning, graph analytics, and data lifecycle management extend its reach beyond routine log review. The combination is useful for teams that need to search and correlate varied data, though the breadth is more than a narrowly focused logging deployment may require.

Kibana’s dashboards and reporting help teams inspect and present data, while alerting supports monitoring workflows. Security capabilities include authentication integrations, role-based access control, SSL/TLS encryption, IP filtering, audit logging, and field- and document-level controls. Security offerings also include detection rules, malware prevention, and cloud posture management. Elastic’s Trust Center lists attestations and certifications including SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3, PCI, HIPAA, ISO 27001, and FedRAMP Moderate and High.

More than 300 turn-key integrations connect Elastic products with applications, infrastructure, public content, S3, MySQL, and cloud providers. That range can reduce the work of assembling disparate data sources. Hosted support ranges from Limited and Base to Enhanced and Premium, with 24/7/365 options; Platinum and Enterprise hosted tiers list a 99.95% monthly uptime SLA.

Pricing

Pricing spans free self-managed use, usage-based serverless plans, and hosted deployments priced around their resources. Elasticsearch is free to download and start, and Elastic Cloud offers a 14-day trial without requiring a credit card. The trial is a way to assess the hosted service, not a substitute for estimating a production configuration.

Plan	Price	What it means
Basic (self-managed)	Free	Free Basic features for self-managed use; a paid self-managed price is not given.
Logs Essentials	0.07 USD per contact	Elastic Observability Serverless usage-based pricing, with ingest measured per GB and 50 GB of monthly egress free.
Complete	0.09 USD per month	Usage-based pricing with ingest measured per GB and 50 GB of monthly egress free.
Standard	99.00 USD per month	As low as, based on a cloud production configuration; 120 GB storage and 2 zones.
Gold	114.00 USD per month	As low as, based on a cloud production configuration; adds reporting, third-party alerting actions, Watcher, and multi-stack monitoring to Standard.
Platinum	131.00 USD per month	As low as, based on a cloud production configuration; adds advanced security, machine learning, cross-cluster replication, and enhanced support to Gold.
Enterprise	184.00 USD per month	As low as; adds searchable snapshots, SAML SSO, Elastic Workflows, AI features, and premium support to Platinum.
Elastic Cloud Serverless	Custom pricing	Usage-based, pay as you go monthly or prepaid; available on AWS, GCP, and Azure.
Elastic Cloud hosted	Custom pricing	Resource-based, pay as you go monthly or prepaid; cost depends on deployment components, instance sizes, provider, region, zones, snapshots, and transfer.
Self-managed paid subscriptions	Custom pricing	License-based on node count and RAM used. Platinum is for existing customers only; Gold is discontinued.

The low hosted prices are configuration-based starting points, not universal flat rates. Elastic Cloud can also charge for snapshot storage and data transfer; serverless includes 50 GB transferred each month, then charges $0.05 per GB. Standard’s stated 120 GB and two zones give a concrete baseline, while higher tiers add capabilities and support that matter most to teams with advanced security, replication, or enterprise access requirements. Basic is the sensible starting point for teams willing to self-manage and satisfied with its free feature set.

Platforms

Downloads cover Windows packages, Linux package managers, Docker containers, and installation archives for Linux and macOS. Self-managed deployments can run on-premises, in public or private clouds, or in hybrid environments; hosted Elastic Cloud runs on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. This range lets infrastructure teams align deployment with their environment, while teams wanting less operational control can choose the hosted service.

Who it's for

ELK Stack is a strong fit for organizations that need a shared platform for centralized logs, monitoring, search, and security analytics, especially when they have the expertise to run a distributed system or a reason to use Elastic Cloud. Teams needing flexible ingestion and substantial search and analysis capabilities can make use of its breadth. It is a weaker fit for buyers seeking a simple, fixed-price log-retention service: hosted charges vary with configuration and transfer, and self-management brings operational work.

Pros and cons

Pros: Open-source foundations and free self-managed access give teams a low-cost way to start and retain deployment control.
Pros: Ingestion, search, analytics, dashboards, and security capabilities sit in one stack, with more than 300 integrations to connect varied sources.
Pros: Hosted and self-managed options cover cloud, local, and hybrid deployment needs.
Cons: Hosted costs depend on configuration and can include snapshot storage and transfer charges, making the starting prices an incomplete guide to a production bill.
Cons: The platform’s scope and self-managed deployment options are a poor match for teams that want a narrowly focused service without operational overhead.
Cons: Advanced features and support are tiered; SAML SSO appears with Enterprise, and self-managed paid-subscription pricing is custom.

Alternatives

Sumo Logic is worth considering for a web-based freemium option whose free plan includes 20 daily credits, seven-day log retention, and up to three users. Choose Elastic Observability when the focus is specifically Elastic’s observability offering rather than the broader stack. SolarWinds Loggly offers a free Lite plan with 200 MB per day, seven days of retention, and unlimited users; it may suit a team seeking a smaller stated daily allowance and short retention window. VictoriaLogs is a free alternative with an open-source single-node or cluster plan. Amazon CloudWatch Logs is a paid, pay-as-you-go alternative with a published US East (N. Virginia) ingestion rate of 0.50 USD per month for the first 10 TB; rates vary by region and tier. groundcover offers a free-forever BYOC plan with 12-hour retention and no credit card requirement. XPLG has a free self-hosted plan with 500 MB per day, three days of retention, and caps on logs, sources, and monitors. Logflare offers a free project plan with unlimited sources and up to three days of retention.

Verdict

Choose ELK Stack if you need broad ingestion, search, analysis, and security capabilities with the freedom to self-manage or move to Elastic Cloud. Its strongest case is the breadth of the platform and the control over where it runs. Look elsewhere if predictable, simple log-service pricing or minimal operational responsibility matters more than that flexibility.
