Overview

Banner Finance covers procurement, general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, fixed assets, internal stores, journal entries, budget development, sponsored research accounting, and endowment management. That breadth can bring many institutional finance processes into one product, rather than leaving teams to work across narrowly focused tools. Institutions seeking a general-purpose finance system without higher-education needs may find that focus less compelling.

The product provides real-time access to financial data and supports budget-versus-actuals analysis. It also provides financial statement reports for GASB and FASB, a useful fit for institutions with those reporting needs.

Key features

Grant accounting

The Research and Grants module supports projects from proposal through close, offers a comprehensive view of grant data, and produces federal reports including the Federal Financial Report. Its grants ledger can operate outside fiscal year end, which is relevant to institutions whose sponsored-project accounting does not align neatly with that boundary.

Staff self-service

My Finance Query offers spend-analysis dashboards, saved queries, and query sharing. My Requisitions lets staff create and track requisitions, while My Journals supports journal-voucher processing and management. These tools extend access beyond finance specialists, helping staff check budget balances and transactional spend without making every routine query a finance-team task.

Mobile access and integrations

Secure mobile access provides financial information and personalized self-service views on mobile devices. Listed integrated applications include Ellucian Spend Management powered by Chrome River, Ellucian Analytics, Ellucian Workflow, Ellucian CRM Advance, and Banner Document Management. These integrations may matter to institutions considering connected Ellucian products, but the stated scope alone does not establish how a particular campus workflow will operate.

Cloud security

Ellucian says its cloud services are ISO 27001:2022 certified, with customer-accessible SOC 1, SOC 2 Type II, and SOC 3 audit reports. It also says its cloud security systems are monitored around the clock and that it maintains an incident response plan. SaaS security responsibilities are shared with customers, so institutions should account for their own part of that work during evaluation.

Pricing

Ellucian Banner Finance: custom pricing; contact Ellucian for a demo. The product is paid, and no free plan or free trial is stated. That sales-led route means prospective buyers should establish total cost and fit directly with Ellucian before budgeting; there is no published entry tier to compare against institutional requirements.

Platforms

Banner Finance is a cloud deployment with Android, iOS, and web access. Mobile access supports financial information and self-service views, while the web platform serves the broader finance workflows.

Who it's for

Institutional finance departments are the primary audience, especially at colleges and universities managing grants alongside budgets, procurement, accounting, and endowments. Non-finance staff can also benefit from budget visibility and tools for routine requisition and journal work. It is less suited to buyers who need transparent, self-serve pricing or who do not need a higher-education finance focus.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad institutional finance coverage: Procurement, accounting, fixed assets, budgets, grants, and endowments sit within the product's stated scope.
Purpose-built grant workflows: Proposal-to-close support, federal reporting, and a ledger that can operate outside fiscal year end address specific sponsored-research accounting needs.
Self-service for staff: Query, requisition, and journal tools can give non-specialists direct ways to view and process routine finance activity.
Higher-education reporting: GASB and FASB financial statement reports match sector-specific requirements.

Cons

Custom pricing: Buyers must contact Ellucian for a demo and pricing, making early cost comparison harder.
Shared SaaS security duties: Customer responsibilities remain part of the security model, so institutions must plan for their own controls alongside Ellucian's cloud measures.

Alternatives

For a broader look at adjacent categories, browse Fund Accounting Software, Degree Audit Software, and Financial Aid Management Software.

CollegeSource Transferology is a freemium web and API platform for transfer exploration, with a free student account and institution pricing tailored to enrollment; choose it for transfer exploration rather than campus finance management. FlightPath offers a free, self-hosted web community edition using MySQL and PHP; choose it when a no-cost degree-audit tool is the need. Ellucian Degree Works is a paid degree-audit alternative with pricing based on full-time equivalent students in a 2024 Ellucian document; choose it for degree auditing. Risely Agentic Degree Audit, Stellic, DegreeSight, Ellucian Advising, and HighPoint Degree Planner are alternatives in adjacent degree-audit, advising, or degree-planning categories.

Verdict

Banner Finance is a strong candidate for colleges and universities that need broad finance coverage, grant accounting, higher-education reporting, and practical staff self-service in a cloud product. Its main reasons to choose it are the combination of institutional finance processes and grant-specific capabilities; its main reasons to look elsewhere are custom pricing and the need to manage shared SaaS security responsibilities.
