Overview

PhotomatixCL merges exposure-bracketed photos into HDR images, then processes them with tone mapping or exposure fusion. It can take images from a computer or local network, or download them from a web server.

Key features

HDR processing: Image alignment, ghost removal, presets and multiple tone-mapping controls give workflows options for handling and rendering bracketed sets. RAW support and JPG, TIFF and EXR output cover common pipeline input and output needs.
Batch processing: The CLI handles one bracketed set per run; the bundled PhotomatixCL-Driver can batch folders of sets. That makes larger queues more manageable, but each run that processes images uses one credit, regardless of the number of input exposures.
Automation and connectivity: It is intended for cloud and local server workflows and does not require API integration code. Free-plan usage tracking requires internet access, and the software fails during an outage unless run in trial mode. That is a meaningful constraint for servers that must keep processing offline.
Linux builds: Downloads include Ubuntu, a statically linked universal build and an ARM build for Debian. The universal build omits lens correction, so Linux users who need that feature should choose a suitable alternative build or account for the omission.
Trial mode: Trial runs do not consume credits, but output images carry a Photomatix watermark. It can help assess the workflow before committing, but is not suitable for delivering clean production images.

Pricing

PhotomatixCL has a free plan, a trial and paid options. One HDR credit is charged for each run that processes images, independent of the number of bracketed inputs in that run.

Free: $0 /month, with 100 credits monthly and one credit per run. This provides a modest allowance for recurring use, but the credit cap and internet requirement limit its appeal for sustained or offline production.
Lite: $19.00 USD per month, billed $19 /month, with 1,000 credits monthly and use on a single system. It suits a smaller, predictable pipeline on one machine; the fixed monthly quota and single-system license are restrictive for larger or distributed workloads.
Growth: $29.00 USD per month, billed $29 /month on the plan table. The monthly credit quota is selectable, extra credits are charged by usage, and multiple systems and concurrent instances are supported. The FAQ gives 5,000 credits at $49/month by default and $0.015 per credit above quota. This is the more suitable subscription for scaling across systems, though the over-quota rate makes volume planning important; the stated additional-credit prices differ between the plan table ($0.0015) and FAQ ($0.015).
Pay-As-You-Go: One-time purchase with a selectable credit amount. Each license key is for one system, and top-ups add to the remaining credits. It can suit irregular workloads that do not justify a monthly quota, but it does not provide the multi-system support of Growth.

Paid pricing starts from $39 one-time. HDRsoft also offers email and a technical support form, with replies expected within 24 hours for licensing or ordering issues and within two business days for other queries.

Platforms

PhotomatixCL supports Windows, Linux and macOS. Linux users can choose among the Ubuntu, universal and ARM Debian builds, with the universal build lacking lens correction.

Who it's for

This is a strong fit for real estate photography agencies, SaaS image-editing services and other teams that need repeatable HDR processing in a high-volume pipeline. Its command-line workflow and folder driver suit automated queues; the credit model and internet dependency are less attractive for occasional desktop use or systems that need uninterrupted offline operation.

Pros and cons

Pro: Server-oriented operation without API integration code lowers the barrier to incorporating HDR merging into an existing automated workflow.
Pro: Folder batching, alignment, ghost removal, tone mapping and exposure fusion cover practical stages of processing bracketed sets.
Pro: The Growth plan supports multiple systems and concurrent instances, a useful distinction for distributed processing.
Con: Free usage is capped at 100 monthly credits and requires internet access for tracking; an outage stops processing outside trial mode.
Con: Trial output is watermarked, so trial runs cannot produce clean deliverables.
Con: Lite is limited to one system, while Pay-As-You-Go also licenses only one system per key.
Con: The Growth additional-credit price is stated as both $0.0015 and $0.015 per credit, so confirm the applicable rate before budgeting.

Alternatives

HDR Software is a useful place to compare more HDR tools. Consider these specific alternatives:

SNS-HDR is worth considering if its freemium offering and macOS or Windows support suit your needs.
ColorForge is a free option with no account requirement, no watermark and no installation, and supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows.
easyHDR may suit users seeking a lifetime single-user license for non-profit use, with free updates and Windows and macOS support on its HOME plan.
Luminance HDR is a free, GPLv2 desktop HDR imaging option for Linux, macOS and Windows.
ON1 Portrait AI is another paid option, with a free trial and support for macOS and Windows.
Photomatix Pro is a related paid alternative with HDR merge developer tools and a subscription starting at $19/month.
HDRMerge is a free GPL-3.0-or-later option for Linux, macOS and Windows.
EnfuseGUI is a paid alternative for macOS and Windows with yearly and monthly plans.

Verdict

Choose PhotomatixCL if you need bracketed-photo HDR processing built into a repeatable server or service pipeline: its command-line approach, folder driver and Growth multi-system support are the main reasons to pick it. Look elsewhere if offline reliability, unwatermarked evaluation, or low-volume desktop use matters more than automation, since credit tracking and per-system limits can complicate those cases.
