Overview

The core routine is practical: EnglishCentral recommends videos, highlights unfamiliar words, teaches those words in context and then asks learners to speak with feedback. That makes it a better fit for learners who prefer guided practice over an unstructured video catalogue. EnglishCentral says its Machine Learning Loop uses learner data and feedback from more than 600 trained professional English teachers to shape that experience.

The service has operated since 2009. Its company information cites 15,400 videos, 10,012,400 learners and 1,050 schools and enterprises, while its FAQ describes a library of more than 30,000 videos with new additions every day. The differing published counts suggest a broad and frequently refreshed catalogue, though the product is still focused on one language: English.

Key features

Video lessons are the foundation. Learners can watch, study associated vocabulary and practise speaking applications, giving self-study a clear sequence rather than treating videos as passive entertainment. Paid plans add unlimited interactive video lessons and courses, so the video component does not consume the live-lesson allowance.

GoLive! offers 25-minute, one-to-one conversations with a private tutor about a video, with tutors available around the clock. Lessons can run in EnglishCentral Classroom, Zoom or Microsoft Teams. This is the strongest reason to choose EnglishCentral over a video-only course, but the weekly credit rules matter: unused lessons expire at the end of the subscription week, defined as the next seven days from the subscription date.

MiMi provides free-form AI conversation and feedback on vocabulary, grammar, nativeness and fluency. It is useful for frequent, low-pressure speaking practice between tutor sessions, although it does not replace the accountability or interaction of a human teacher. Speech practice, pronunciation work, personalised review and a placement test round out the study loop. The free 20-minute level test produces a study plan, and a free lesson can be tried from a computer or phone.

Pricing

EnglishCentral uses a freemium model. Free users can watch videos, learn related vocabulary, try speaking activities and take one free 20-minute tutor lesson. That is enough to judge whether the video-to-speaking format suits you, but it is not a substitute for sustained tutoring.

Video Learning: custom pricing for unlimited interactive video lessons and courses, speaking activities, and vocabulary and pronunciation practice. It suits learners who want structured self-study without a recurring tutor quota.
2 Per Week: custom pricing for unlimited video lessons and courses plus two live tutor lessons weekly, with up to two lessons scheduled in advance. This is the economical tutoring option for occasional guided speaking.
3 Per Week: custom pricing with three live lessons weekly and up to three scheduled in advance. It fits learners seeking a regular weekly rhythm without the heavier commitment of Pro tiers.
5 Per Week: custom pricing with five live lessons weekly and up to three scheduled in advance. It is aimed at intensive learners who can reliably use the allowance.
7 Per Week Pro: custom pricing with up to seven live lessons, unlimited active group lessons and up to four lessons scheduled in advance. The extra group access suits learners who want more frequent interaction.
14 Per Week Pro: custom pricing with up to 14 live lessons, unlimited active group lessons and up to nine scheduled in advance. It is the high-intensity choice, but only makes sense if you can use nearly every weekly credit.

Plans can be purchased for one, three or 12 months. Subscriptions auto-renew unless cancelled; cancellation leaves access active through the paid period. Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and PayPal are accepted. School and enterprise pricing is quoted on request, and partner implementations can have different feature and plan availability. Teachers can set assignments, track learning history and process grades.

Platforms

EnglishCentral runs on the web and has Android and iOS apps. Offline lessons are supported, which helps learners continue studying away from a connection. Tutor sessions may use EnglishCentral Classroom, Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

Who it's for

Choose EnglishCentral if you want English vocabulary taught through video, frequent speaking prompts and the option of live, private correction. It is particularly suitable for self-directed learners who can maintain a weekly schedule and for schools that need assignments and progress records. It is less suitable if you need several languages, want unused tutoring credits preserved, or prefer a purely conversational AI app.

Pros and cons

Pros: video, vocabulary, speech practice and tutoring form one coherent workflow; MiMi adds on-demand AI speaking feedback; tutors are available 24/7; free access includes a level test, study plan and one tutor lesson; offline lessons support mobile study.
Cons: paid prices are custom rather than transparent; weekly tutor credits do not carry over; the free allowance is limited; the service focuses on English only; subscription auto-renewal requires active cancellation.

Alternatives

For a broader starting point, compare the Language learning apps list. If pronunciation is your priority, the Language Pronunciation Apps list is more targeted.

SpeakPal is a better choice for learners wanting 30-plus languages and daily free AI conversation. TalkDrill suits users who value AI chat, peer text chat and a small daily AI voice/video allowance. TriTalk is an Android/iOS option built around short daily scenarios and basic pronunciation feedback. BoldVoice is a paid pronunciation-focused alternative with Android, iOS, macOS and web support. InPronunci focuses on accent training. Lingova, Phoneme and Pronuncia are alternatives for learners seeking pronunciation-oriented tools rather than EnglishCentral's combined video-and-tutor model.

Verdict

EnglishCentral is a strong choice for English learners who want a structured video curriculum backed by AI practice and scheduled human conversation. Choose it for the breadth of its learning loop and 24/7 tutor access; look elsewhere if transparent pricing, rolling lesson credits or multi-language study is more important than that integrated English-speaking routine.
