Overview

The free version scans apps and files in real time, with ESET LiveGrid cloud intelligence to help detect new threats. That makes it a reasonable starting point for routine malware checks, but it does not cover the product’s Premium phishing, payment or privacy protections. ESET also identifies ransomware, smishing and adware among the threats it aims to address.

Installation is through Google Play, and ESET provides product help and technical support links from its site. The company says it has more than 30 years of digital security experience and 11 research and development centers, though those credentials do not change the practical distinction between the free and Premium tiers.

Key features

Scanning and threat intelligence

Antivirus and real-time scanning cover apps and files, while LiveGrid adds cloud-based threat intelligence. This is the product’s core free benefit: ongoing checks without a subscription price. Readers who need protection focused on malicious links and scam messages will need Premium Anti-Phishing and Anti-Smishing, which blocks fake websites, malicious links and scam messages.

Payments and app privacy

Premium Payment Protection adds security to financial apps, helping prevent malicious apps from reading or replacing on-screen information. App Lock uses a PIN or fingerprint to restrict access to sensitive apps and personal content. These features extend protection beyond malware scanning, but their value depends on whether you use financial apps or want an additional barrier around private content.

Anti-Theft and additional tools

Premium Proactive Anti-Theft can remotely lock a device, track its location and capture snapshots. Premium also includes scheduled scanning, a security audit and Call Filter. That is a broader set of safeguards than the free tier provides, but Anti-Theft has a device caveat: some features are unavailable on tablets without calling and messaging.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free	0.00 USD per free	Lifetime subscription with basic features, including antivirus and real-time scanning.
Premium	Custom pricing	Premium features for an Android smartphone or tablet.

The Free plan is the fit for users who mainly want app and file scanning. It gives up Premium phishing and anti-smishing protection, payment protection, App Lock, Anti-Theft and the other Premium tools. Premium is the more suitable choice for users who want those protections, but its price is custom pricing.

Premium features are available free for 30 days. ESET says the trial requires no credit card and does not automatically bill at the end, so it offers a way to assess the added protections without an automatic paid renewal.

Platforms

The product supports Android. Requirements include Android 9.0 or higher, at least 512 MB RAM, an internet connection, Google Play and Accessibility services. Rooted devices are unsupported, and some features depend on Android version. Check those requirements before installing, particularly on older or modified devices.

Who it's for

This is a sensible option for Android users who want free, ongoing antivirus scanning and the choice to add protections for phishing, financial apps, app privacy and device loss. Premium is more compelling for people who rely on mobile banking or want remote lock and location tools. It is a poor fit for rooted devices, and users on tablets should not count on every Anti-Theft feature.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free tier includes antivirus and real-time app and file scanning, giving cost-conscious Android users a useful malware-checking baseline.
Pros: Premium adds protections for scam links and messages, financial apps, sensitive apps and device loss in one Android product.
Pros: The 30-day Premium trial does not require a credit card or automatically bill at its end.
Cons: The free plan omits phishing, payment, privacy and Anti-Theft tools, so users needing those protections must move beyond the free tier.
Cons: Rooted devices are unsupported, some features vary by Android version, and some Anti-Theft tools are unavailable on tablets without calling and messaging.
Cons: Premium pricing is custom pricing, so the cost cannot be compared from a published plan price.

Alternatives

Bitdefender Total Security is worth considering if you want coverage across Android, iOS, macOS and Windows; its Individual plan is 59.99 USD per year for five devices and one account, with the first-year price plus applicable sales tax.

PC Matic is another cross-platform freemium option for users comparing Android protection with Windows, Mac and iOS coverage; its Antivirus plan is 60.00 USD per year billed annually.

For businesses comparing endpoint protection products, Endpoint Protection Platforms is a relevant category. Readers focused on malware cleanup can browse Malware Removal Software, while those evaluating mobile-focused defense can compare Mobile Threat Defense Software. Business Antivirus Software is suited to business antivirus comparisons, Antivirus for Mac to Mac protection, and Antivirus software to broader antivirus options.

Verdict

Choose ESET Mobile Security for Android if you want free real-time scanning and a clear upgrade path to protections for phishing, payments, app privacy and device loss. Its main advantage is that useful scanning is available at no cost and Premium can be tried for 30 days without automatic billing. Look elsewhere if you need support for rooted devices, a published Premium price, or dependable access to every Anti-Theft feature on a tablet.
