Overview

Express Burn is desktop software for creating audio CDs, authoring video discs and burning data to optical media. It suits home users who need more than a basic burner, as well as people automating repeatable disc-writing tasks. The free edition is a narrow option for non-commercial CD burning; DVD and Blu-ray work calls for a paid plan.

Key features

Audio projects can become MP3 or audio CDs, with support for WAV, MP3, WMA, OGG and FLAC. That range is helpful when source files come in different formats, though it does not lift the free edition's CD-only limit.

For video, Express Burn supports DVD and Blu-ray authoring, chapter management and PAL or NTSC output. DVD projects can use more than 20 menu templates and accept custom images. These tools make it a better fit for preparing structured video discs than for users who only need to write files; access to video functions requires a paid plan.

Data discs can use ISO/Joliet, UDF or Hybrid formats, and Express Burn can create and burn ISO images. It also supports bootable data discs, disc copying, recordable and rewritable media, and dual-layer DVD and Blu-ray burning. Command-line operation can help with repeatable jobs or integration with other programs, but is of little consequence for occasional manual burning.

NCH says Express Burn is not for breaking copy-protection or region-protection, and that its audio and video features are for users' own content. NCH also says its programs may collect anonymous usage data, such as how often menus or options are used. Its support includes troubleshooting and how-to articles, a forum, a help manual and a technical-support contact option.

Pricing

Express Burn Free costs 0.00 USD per free. It does not expire, but is restricted to non-commercial use and CD burning. That makes it suitable for personal audio or data CDs, not commercial work or DVD and Blu-ray projects.

Express Burn Plus CD Burner Annual Plan costs 34.99 USD per year, billed Annual, and includes audio and data CD burning. It is the paid option for people who need CD work beyond the free edition's non-commercial terms, but it does not include DVD or Blu-ray recording.

Express Burn Plus CD + DVD Authoring Annual Plan costs 49.99 USD per year, billed Annual, and covers CD and DVD recording. Choose it for DVD authoring without Blu-ray; users who need Blu-ray must step up to the broader plan.

Express Burn Plus CD + DVD + Blu-ray Authoring Annual Plan costs 59.95 USD per year, billed Annual, and includes all supported disc types. It is the relevant tier for Blu-ray or the full disc range. The annual terms mean buyers should weigh recurring cost against how often they need optical-media authoring.

Platforms

Express Burn runs on macOS and Windows, so it can serve desktop users on either platform. It is not a Linux option.

Who it's for

Choose Express Burn if you need a single desktop tool for audio CDs, data discs and authored DVD or Blu-ray projects, especially when ISO work or command-line automation matters. It is a weaker choice for users who only need occasional free burning but require DVD or Blu-ray support, or for anyone working on Linux.

Pros and cons

Broad disc-authoring scope: Audio, data, DVD and Blu-ray capabilities cover more than simple file writing, but DVD and Blu-ray require paid plans.
Flexible data and workflow options: Multiple data formats, ISO creation and burning, bootable discs and command-line operation serve varied or repeatable jobs; they may be unnecessary for casual use.
Useful free tier, with firm boundaries: It does not expire, but is non-commercial and CD-only.
Annual paid plans: The tiers separate CD, DVD and Blu-ray access, though buyers seeking broader support pay a recurring yearly price.

Verdict

Express Burn is a sensible choice for desktop users who need a broad mix of disc authoring, ISO tools and automation in one application. Its main advantage is coverage from audio CDs through Blu-ray; its main drawback is that the free edition stops at non-commercial CDs and broader access carries an annual fee. Pick it when those authoring features justify the recurring cost, and look elsewhere for free DVD or Blu-ray burning or Linux support.
