Overview

Extend brings company card controls and employee expense administration into one platform for businesses managing spend across teams. It is most compelling for organizations that can issue cards through a participating bank and use one of its accounting integrations; small teams needing paid features may find the Pro minimum hard to justify.

Virtual card creation depends on a participating bank partner. Eligible Visa or Mastercard cards from other banks can be registered for expense management, but not for Extend virtual card issuance.

Key features

Cards and expense controls

Virtual cards can carry spending limits and expiration dates and be assigned to vendor payments, subscriptions, or team expenses. That makes Extend useful for separating and bounding team purchases, rather than relying on a shared card without those controls. Budgets, receipt capture, expense reports, reimbursements, approval workflows, and transaction reporting cover the administrative work around those transactions.

Accounting and issuing API

Integrations with QuickBooks Online and Desktop, NetSuite, Xero, Sage Intacct, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central make the expense workflow more useful to businesses already operating in those systems. The API supports card issuance, transaction metadata, configurable controls, and real-time authorization and clearing data through webhooks, so it suits organizations building card issuance into their own workflows.

Security and support

Extend says it is PCI and SOC 2 compliant and uses TLS with SHA-256 and RSA encryption to protect data. It also says only a card’s designated recipient can see its full number; the primary cardholder and organization admins see the last four digits in the app and reports. Starter includes email and chat support, Pro adds priority support, and Enterprise includes a designated account manager and custom implementation. A help center, onboarding support, webinars, and learning resources provide additional guidance.

Pricing

Extend has a free Starter plan and paid Pro plans, with no free trial. The main trade-off is capacity: Starter is capped at five users, 10 guests, 100 virtual cards per month, one expense category, and 15 category labels. Its zero-price entry point is suitable for a small team with limited categorization needs, but those quotas can constrain a growing operation.

Pro (annual) costs 8.99 USD per year, billed per user per month on the annual plan, with a 10-user minimum. It allows up to 50 guests, 500 virtual cards per month, five expense categories, and 500 category labels. Pro (monthly) costs 11.99 USD per month, also billed per user per month, with the same 10-user minimum and limits. The monthly option costs more per user but avoids the annual billing term; either paid plan is a poor fit for teams below the minimum.

Enterprise has custom pricing, no user minimum, custom user packages, virtual card issuance by API key, and unlimited expense categories and labels. It is the relevant tier for organizations that need API-key issuance or have outgrown Pro’s category limits, though the price needs to be established for the specific program.

Platforms

Extend is available on Android, iOS, and web, with an API for card issuance and integrations.

Who it's for

Extend suits businesses that want card controls alongside expense reporting, approvals, reimbursements, and reconciliation, especially when their issuing bank and accounting system fit its supported setup. It is less suitable for a small team that needs paid-plan features but cannot meet the 10-user Pro minimum, or for a company whose bank cannot support Extend virtual card creation.

Pros and cons

Pros: Spending limits and expiration dates make it possible to bound virtual card use for specific expenses.
Pros: Expense workflows and integrations with six named accounting products connect card activity to common bookkeeping systems.
Pros: The API provides issuance controls and real-time transaction data through webhooks for businesses embedding card issuance.
Cons: Virtual card creation requires a participating bank partner, limiting the card feature’s reach.
Cons: Pro requires at least 10 users, while Starter’s five-user and 100-card monthly caps may be restrictive as needs grow.
Cons: Starter permits only one expense category, and moving to five categories on Pro still leaves more complex categorization to Enterprise.

Alternatives

For a wider selection, browse Card Issuing Platforms. Paynetics Card Issuing is worth considering for customizable programs with physical and virtual Visa or Mastercard cards. Choose Marqeta if you want a paid enterprise platform with API and web access. Mastercard Decision Intelligence is another paid web option. Lithic may suit teams seeking a custom quote based on transaction volume and required features. OpenWay Way4 is a paid alternative with API, web, and self-hosted platforms. Enfuce Cards scopes pricing to the program, with a one-time implementation fee, monthly service fee, volume-based fee, and possible add-ons. Nium Physical and Virtual Cards is another paid card-program option. Conferma Pay is a paid option for web, iOS, and Android.

Verdict

Choose Extend if your business can use a participating issuing bank and wants virtual card controls tied to a broad employee-expense workflow and accounting integrations. Its issuing API adds a clear path for organizations building card issuance into their systems. Look elsewhere if your bank is not supported or you need paid access for fewer than 10 users.
