Overview

FamilyAlbum is a private photo- and video-sharing service built for parents who want to keep relatives involved in a child’s growing collection of moments. It is strongest as a shared family space, not as a general-purpose photo library or desktop-first archive.

Automatic monthly organization, album conversations, and recurring print options make the free plan useful from the outset. Families who need longer videos, computer uploads, or bulk downloads will need to weigh the paid tiers against those specific needs.

Key features

New photos and videos are sorted into albums by month, so the archive gains structure without asking one person to curate it. Invited family members can comment, react, and communicate within the album, while owners can check whether members have viewed photos. That combination suits relatives who want to follow along together; it is less suited to sharing with a broad audience, since access is limited to invitees.

Family members can each receive a set of 11 free prints every month. Monthly photobook suggestions provide a starting point for turning uploads into keepsakes, and users can create their own books instead. The free plan also includes 1s Movies, which combine up to three photos or videos. For longer clips, Premium Family supports uploads up to 10 minutes; Premium Family Pro raises quality to 1920 × 1080.

Computer uploads of supported photo and video files are available to Premium subscribers after they register an email address in the smartphone app. This helps families whose media already lives on a computer, but it does not make FamilyAlbum a desktop workflow: there is no desktop app. Pro bulk downloads are restricted to media the user has permission to download, and the feature works only in the app.

FamilyAlbum supports face search, shared albums, family sharing, and video backup. Its privacy practices include encrypted transfers between devices and servers, firewall protection, secure passwords, two-factor authentication, SSH key authentication, and regular inspections by outside agencies. The company says it does not sell user data to third parties and does not store payment information. Deleted media is removed from servers within 30 days; personal data is deleted within 30 days of an account deletion request, unless law requires longer retention. Support is available by email or through Support in the app’s Settings tab.

Pricing

FamilyAlbum uses a freemium model, with paid plans starting at $2.99 USD per month. A free trial is offered, but its length is not given.

Free Version — free: Unlimited photo and video storage, 11 free prints per family member each month, and 1s Movies for up to three photos or videos. This is a strong fit for families who want an ongoing shared archive and short compilations without a subscription. It does not include the longer video uploads or computer uploads described in paid plans.
Premium One — $2.99 USD/month: Covers the subscriber and adds no third-party ads, premium slideshows and themed compilations, and digital photo frame features. Choose it when those presentation options matter to one person; it is not the plan for extending paid benefits to the whole family.
Premium Family — $5.99 USD/month or $59 USD/year: Covers all family members and adds video uploads up to 10 minutes, share groups, Pages, computer uploads, and free shipping excluding photo prints. This is the more practical upgrade for a family that contributes from computers or regularly shares longer clips. The annual option is priced separately from monthly billing.
Premium Family Pro — $10.99 USD/month or $109 USD/year: Covers all family members and adds high-quality video uploads up to 1920 × 1080, bulk downloads, iOS background uploads, TV casting, and search features. It is aimed at families that need those additional media and retrieval tools; bulk downloads remain limited to permitted media and are app-only.

Platforms

FamilyAlbum is available on Android, iOS, and the web. The lack of a desktop app matters most to families who want to manage or browse their archive primarily from a computer; computer uploads on Premium plans only partly address that gap.

Who it's for

FamilyAlbum is a good choice for parents who want an invite-only place to share children’s photos and videos with relatives, keep uploads organized by month, and turn selected moments into prints or photobooks. It also makes sense for families who value participation—comments, reactions, and view checks—alongside storage.

Look elsewhere if you need a desktop app, a broadly shareable gallery, or a plan whose key requirement is computer-based management. The free tier’s unlimited storage is appealing, but it does not replace paid tiers for longer videos or computer uploads.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited photo and video storage on the free plan gives families room to build an archive without a storage quota.
Pros: Monthly sorting, album conversation, and view checks support an ongoing family routine rather than one-way file storage.
Pros: Each family member can receive 11 free prints monthly, with suggested or custom photobooks as further keepsake options.
Pros: Invite-only access and layered security measures are well matched to sharing family media privately.
Cons: The free plan’s 1s Movies are limited to three photos or videos, while uploads of up to 10 minutes require Premium Family.
Cons: Computer uploads require a paid subscription and setup through the smartphone app; there is no desktop app.
Cons: Pro bulk downloads are app-only and restricted to media the user has download permission for, limiting their usefulness as a universal export tool.

Alternatives

Tinybeans is worth considering for families who prefer a monthly upload allowance on its free tier: it permits 20 photo or video uploads per month with ads, while Tinybeans+ costs 7.99 USD per month for unlimited monthly uploads and 200GB storage. FamilyAlbum instead offers unlimited storage free and includes monthly prints.

Piwigo may suit people who want a self-hosted photo-management option: its free self-hosted plan includes all features, themes, and plugins. FamilyAlbum is the more family-centered choice, with invited sharing and album conversations built into the service.

PhotoPrism is an alternative for readers considering a self-hosted photo library; its Community plan is open source and includes unlimited storage and instances.

Pic-Time is another freemium option, with client galleries, a print store, and 10GB of photo storage on its free plan, reduced to 3GB after six months, plus 1GB of video storage. It is the clearer fit for client-gallery and print-store needs than a private family album.

Picflow offers a free plan with 2 GB storage, 50 workflow credits, one included seat, and unlimited galleries and collaborators; consider it when those gallery and workflow limits fit your use.

ShootProof Portfolio Website has a free plan with 100 photos, up to 5 GB, unlimited client galleries, and a simple portfolio website, making it a different option for a portfolio-led use.

picdrop offers a free web plan with 1 GB storage, three galleries, and basic collaboration features.

EventPics is another freemium option for readers to consider.

Verdict

Choose FamilyAlbum if you are a parent looking for an invite-only, family-oriented archive that organizes uploads automatically and gives relatives a place to respond. Its standout case is the mix of unlimited free storage, family conversation, and recurring print options. Look elsewhere if computer-first management is essential, or compare paid tiers carefully if long videos and bulk downloads are central to your routine.
