Overview

Favicon Maker is a free web tool for turning an image into favicon and app-icon assets. It is best suited to site owners and developers who already have artwork and need the files and configuration to put it to use. Its scope is deliberately narrow: it makes icon packages, rather than serving as a broader design environment.

Key features

It accepts PNG, JPG, SVG, and WebP, and creates an ICO with 16×16, 32×32, and 48×48 images. The PNG set includes a 180×180 Apple Touch icon and Android icons at 192×192 and 512×512; an SVG export can adapt to light and dark browser themes. That combination handles several common browser and mobile icon needs from one source image, though it does not replace a general-purpose graphics editor for creating or substantially revising the artwork itself.

For Android adaptive icons, the maskable PWA option adds 10% safe-zone padding. Corner radius, fit mode, background color, and transparency handling provide practical control over how an image sits in its outputs. A live preview makes those choices easier to assess before export, and a ZIP download keeps the generated assets together.

Copyable HTML, manifest.json, and browserconfig.xml code help connect the icons to a website, making the tool more useful than a file converter alone for a straightforward setup. Image processing happens locally in the browser, so uploaded artwork is not transmitted to a server. Generation requires no cookies; advertising cookies are set only with consent, and the site uses self-hosted, cookieless Umami analytics with anonymized usage data. The site is hosted by Vercel on EU servers, and Vercel is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

Pricing

Favicon Maker has one plan: Free at no cost. It includes ICO, PNG, and SVG exports, an app icon set, and web manifest support, with no paid tier or quota described. That makes it an easy choice for occasional icon generation or a small website setup; teams seeking a broader paid design or site-building service should look elsewhere.

Platforms

Favicon Maker is a web tool. Android, iOS, and Windows are also listed as platforms, but the service's described workflow is browser-based rather than a separate native application.

Who it's for

Choose it when you have an image ready and want common favicon and app-icon sizes, a bundle of output files, and site configuration snippets in one free workflow. The local processing is especially useful when you prefer not to send source artwork to a server. It is not the right fit for someone who needs icon illustration, a larger design suite, or a native desktop workflow.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple standard formats and sizes, including a multi-size ICO and theme-adaptive SVG, cover common web and app-icon needs.
Pros: Adjustable appearance, a preview, ZIP download, and copyable configuration code reduce the steps between source image and website setup.
Pros: Local image processing keeps uploads off the server, and generation does not require cookies.
Cons: The tool is focused on converting supplied artwork; it does not offer a wider design workflow.
Cons: It is a web-based service, so readers specifically seeking a native app should consider another option.

Alternatives

Favicon Generators is the directory's broader category for comparing tools in this area.

Static.app is a freemium option with a free tier for one website, 50MB storage, a free subdomain, SSL, QR codes, a Mac desktop app, and a 7-day trial; choose it if you also need a simple website-hosting package.
MakeIcon is another free option, offering PNG or multi-platform ZIP output with no signup or watermark; choose it if that simpler export workflow suits your needs.
Resizo Favicon Generator is a free alternative; choose it if you prefer a separate generator.
Favicon.io is a free web option with generation, conversion, and an emoji library; choose it if those capabilities better match the icon you want to make.
Favicon.now is a free web and API option that also offers generators, converters, validators, a checker, datasets, and guides, with no account required; choose it for that broader set of utilities.
GenFavicon is another free web alternative.
IconsCove has a paid model and provides 20 free signup credits without a card; choose it if you want to explore a credit-based service.
xsukax Favicon Generator is free and open source, available for self-hosting or on the web, and creates multi-resolution ICO files in up to seven sizes; choose it if self-hosting or open-source availability matters.

Verdict

Favicon Maker is a sound choice for site owners who want a free, focused route from existing artwork to a practical set of favicon and app-icon files. Its useful range of exports, configuration snippets, and local processing are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need to create artwork from scratch, work outside the browser, or want a broader website-building service.
