Overview

FBReader combines format support with tools for organizing and continuing a reading collection. It opens ePub books protected with Readium LCP, alongside formats such as fb2, mobi, HTML, RTF and plain text. That breadth is useful when a library includes more than one file type, though platform-specific feature differences matter if you move between devices.

Key features

The FBReader Book Network syncs book collections, reading positions, bookmarks and custom shelves across supported devices. Books are stored in the user's Google Drive space; metadata, covers and reading positions are stored on FBReader servers. FBReader says the service can upload new files and access files it created in Drive, but cannot access other Drive content. The split storage arrangement supports continuity without granting access to an entire Drive library.

OPDS online book catalogues work on Android, Windows, macOS and Linux, but not iOS. That makes FBReader more useful for browsing network catalogues on desktop or Android than on an iPhone or iPad. Android Premium adds PDF and comics support, Google and DeepL translation integration, and automatic reading aloud; readers who need those tools must account for the upgrade.

FBReader's current code is closed source, and it offers a binary SDK for Android and iOS with a text-format rendering engine but no PDF renderer. The maker points users to its FAQ and public Telegram group for online support.

Pricing

FBReader is freemium, with free desktop, Android and iOS versions. FBReader for Windows/macOS/Linux is free, billed free of charge; supported features and formats vary by platform. FBReader Free for Android is free, billed free, though some features require Premium or separate plugins.

FBReader for iOS is free · In‑App Purchases. The free version is capped at ten books and disables online translation; the full version is a one-time fee. That restriction makes the free iOS edition a limited fit for readers with larger collections.

FBReader Premium for Android costs 14.99 USD per once, a one-time purchase tied to a Google Play or Huawei account. It is the option for Android readers who want PDF and comics support, integrated translation or automatic reading aloud. Readers who need only basic format support can start free, but should expect that some Android features require Premium or separate plugins.

Platforms

FBReader supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. On Android 10 and later, version 3.8 and newer uses Android's Storage Access Framework, which restricts folder access and can slow file operations. Readers who regularly manage files through folders may find that constraint inconvenient. iOS also lacks third-party network catalogues for now, and its free version has the ten-book cap.

Who it's for

FBReader suits readers with mixed-format libraries who want a single reader across desktop and mobile, or who value syncing bookmarks and reading positions. It is less suitable for iOS readers who depend on OPDS catalogues or need more than ten books without paying, and for Android users who expect PDF, comics, translation and reading aloud in the free edition.

Pros and cons

Pros: Supports several common formats and Readium LCP-protected ePub, giving mixed-format libraries broad coverage.
Pros: Syncs collections, bookmarks, shelves and reading positions across supported devices.
Pros: Android Premium adds PDF and comics support, two translation integrations and automatic reading aloud for a one-time purchase.
Cons: Feature support varies by platform, so the same library may not have the same tools everywhere.
Cons: The free iOS version is limited to ten books and disables online translators; iOS also lacks third-party OPDS catalogues.
Cons: Android's Storage Access Framework can restrict folder access and slow file operations on Android 10 and later.

Verdict

Choose FBReader if you want broad format support and synced reading progress across supported desktop and mobile devices. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of a flexible reader and collection syncing; look elsewhere if you rely on iOS catalogue browsing, need more than ten books in the free iOS version, or want Android Premium tools without an upgrade.
