Overview

Kommodo combines screen recording, transcription, editing, documentation, and AI tools. Its desktop app captures the full screen and system audio, while its Chrome extension records browser tabs. It also supports webcam recording and video quality up to 4K, giving it room for polished demos as well as screen walkthroughs.

The value is in turning captures into useful records. A recorded demo can become a step-by-step guide with screenshots and instructions, and meeting recordings can produce transcripts, summaries, action items, and weekly recaps. That makes Kommodo more compelling for teams that need repeatable instructions or meeting follow-up than for users who only want to make and share a clip.

Key features

Recording and editing

The transcript-based editor can remove pauses and let users rerecord over mistakes. That is a practical way to clean up spoken walkthroughs without treating the video as a finished, uneditable file. Kommodo says it can capture calls on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and other conferencing platforms without a meeting bot joining.

Google Calendar sync helps schedule meeting recording and organize recordings alongside calendar events. This is useful for people whose recordings are tied to a regular meeting schedule, though the product’s meeting workflow is less central for users focused only on ad hoc screen capture.

Documentation and AI search

Kommodo can convert demos into step-by-step guides, which gives a screen recording a second life as instructions someone can follow later. Its AI assistant searches a user’s video library and answers questions with clickable timestamps to the source, a useful bridge between a large archive and the specific moment someone needs.

Kommodo says it does not use video data or chatbot interactions to train its AI models. Its privacy policy says Google Calendar data is accessed with consent for meeting reminders and recording prompts, is not shared with third parties, and that information is stored on servers in the United States. Teams with data-location requirements should account for that storage location.

API and support

The public API exposes recordings, transcripts, and AI metadata, but API access is limited to Premium and Enterprise plans. Its stated limits are 1,000 requests per hour, up to 100 in-flight requests, and a 5 MB transcript-file cap. These constraints matter for integrations processing many recordings or larger transcript files.

AI Assistant users receive priority support and can book a product tutorial with the founder. That may help teams adopting the wider workflow, although it does not change the plan limits or API caps.

Pricing

Kommodo is freemium, with a free plan and a 30-day trial. The plan figures show Starter at 0.00 USD per free, with 15 videos, one user, and AI search indexing for 10 videos. That is enough to try recording and search, but the single-user allowance rules it out as a shared team workspace, and the video and indexing caps constrain longer-term use.

Kommodo Premium is shown at 9.00 USD per month when billed yearly, with 40% off, and includes unlimited videos, unlimited SOPs, team collaboration, and AI search. This is the more suitable option for teams that need shared use and ongoing documentation. The pricing note also says paid plans start at $20/mo, so buyers should confirm the applicable offer and billing terms before subscribing. Enterprise pricing is custom pricing.

Lower-cost Starter gives up unlimited video, unlimited SOPs, team collaboration, and full AI search coverage. Premium’s API access is also relevant for integration work; the public API is not available on Starter.

Platforms

Kommodo supports web, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and a Chrome extension, with browser and desktop support. That range suits teams mixing desktop capture with mobile access, while the extension specifically covers browser-tab recording. The listed export format is WebM.

Who it's for

Kommodo is a strong fit for teams that turn demos into repeatable guides, need searchable meeting records, or want recordings tied to calendar events. Solo users can assess the workflow on Starter, but its 15-video, one-user, and 10-video search-index limits are narrow. People who mainly need short, shareable screen clips may prefer a simpler recorder.

Pros and cons

Pro: One workflow combines screen and call capture with transcripts, meeting summaries, action items, and weekly recaps, reducing the gap between recording and follow-up.
Pro: Demo-to-guide conversion and timestamp-linked AI answers make recordings more useful as documentation and reference material.
Pro: Webcam recording and up to 4K video quality support higher-fidelity presentations.
Con: Starter is capped at 15 videos and one user, and AI search indexes only 10 videos, limiting its usefulness for teams or growing archives.
Con: API access requires Premium or Enterprise, and the API has request, concurrency, and transcript-size limits that may constrain heavier integrations.
Con: Information is stored on servers in the United States, which may not suit organizations with other data-location requirements.

Verdict

Choose Kommodo if your team needs recordings to become searchable meeting records and reusable documentation, not merely clips. Its integrated guides, transcripts, meeting follow-up, and AI search are the central reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a generous free team plan, a simple recorder, or data stored outside the United States.
