Overview

Figma brings digital product design, prototyping, development handoff, brainstorming, and presentations into one workspace. Its core design environment is built for teams to explore and iterate on products for the Web, while cloud storage and shareable links let people access files and prototypes from anywhere. Link permissions can be set for viewing or editing.

Import support for Sketch, PNG, and JPG helps teams bring existing assets into the workflow. Figma says 95% of Fortune 500 companies used it as of March 2025; that scale may reassure large organizations, though it does not by itself establish that Figma suits every team.

Key features

Design, prototypes, and handoff

Figma Design supports collaborative exploration, iteration, and prototyping. Comments and feedback keep discussion close to the work, while branching lets teammates make changes without affecting the main file. That combination is useful when design decisions involve multiple contributors, though the Starter tier limits co-editing to three files at once.

Dev Mode bridges design and development in the same files, and can run directly in VS Code through an extension. This makes Figma a stronger fit for teams coordinating implementation with design than for people seeking only a standalone illustration tool.

More than product design

FigJam provides an online whiteboard for brainstorming, meetings, and collaborative work. Figma Slides supports co-created presentations with live prototypes, polls, transitions, and PowerPoint import and export. These connected tools can reduce the need to move between separate products for related team activities.

Figma Make turns written prompts or existing designs into working prototypes or apps. It can be accessed on mobile and connected to Supabase and external tools for product documentation. Starter includes a capped allocation of AI credits, so teams expecting sustained AI use should account for that limit and the option to buy more credits.

Official integrations include Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Notion, Jira, Confluence, Zapier, Asana, Linear, Dropbox, Trello, and Productboard. Figma also maintains SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 reports, and says its products and services are certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and ISO/IEC 27018:2019. Its AI management system is certified to ISO/IEC 42001:2023.

Pricing

Figma uses seat types as well as plan tiers, so the cost depends on who needs to edit, inspect development work, or contribute to collaboration tools. Listed prices are per user per month; annual plans are billed annually, while monthly plans renew monthly. Subscription payments are non-refundable.

Plan	Price	What it includes and who it suits
Starter	Free	Unlimited drafts, UI kits and templates, and 150 AI credits per day up to 500 per month. It allows unlimited viewers and co-editing on up to 3 files, with 3 pages per file. A useful way to begin, but the co-editing and page caps constrain active team projects.
Professional	16.00 USD per month, billed monthly; 12.00 USD per month, billed annually	Unlimited files and projects, team libraries, and advanced prototyping. A fit for teams ready to move beyond Starter’s collaboration limits.
Professional Collab seat	3.00 USD per month, billed monthly	FigJam and Figma Slides, view/comment access, and 500 AI credits per month. A lower-cost role for collaborators who do not need a full seat.
Professional Dev seat	12.00 USD per month, billed monthly	Dev Mode, FigJam, Figma Slides, view/comment access, and 500 AI credits per month. Suits developers who need handoff tools without a full design seat.
Professional Full seat	16.00 USD per month, billed monthly	Unlimited files and projects, team-wide design libraries, advanced Dev Mode inspection and MCP Server, and 3,000 AI credits per month. This is the broad Professional role for people who need full design capabilities.
Organization	55.00 USD per month, billed annually	Organization-wide design systems and centralized administration. Its higher cost is aimed at organizations managing design across teams.
Organization Dev seat	25.00 USD per month, billed annually	Dev Mode, FigJam, Figma Slides, view/comment access, and 500 AI credits per month.
Organization Collab seat	5.00 USD per month, billed annually	FigJam and Figma Slides, view/comment access, and 500 AI credits per month.
Enterprise	90.00 USD per month, billed annually	Enterprise administration, advanced security, and controls. Intended for businesses with enterprise-level security needs.
Enterprise Dev seat	35.00 USD per month, billed annually	Dev Mode, FigJam, Figma Slides, view/comment access, and 500 AI credits per month.
Enterprise Collab seat	5.00 USD per month, billed annually	FigJam and Figma Slides, view/comment access, and 500 AI credits per month.

Teams can purchase additional AI credits through pay-as-you-go or subscriptions. Governance+ is an optional Enterprise-only add-on for advanced access, sharing, and compliance tools. Eligible students and educators can access Professional team functionality free through Figma Education.

Platforms

Figma is available on the Web and through desktop apps for macOS and Windows, plus mobile apps for iOS and Android. Mobile access also supports Figma Make. This range accommodates teams working across devices, while Dev Mode’s VS Code extension brings development handoff into that editor.

Who it's for

Figma is a strong choice for product teams that want design, prototypes, feedback, and development handoff tied to shared files. It also suits organizations that need administration and security controls, or teams that value whiteboarding and presentation tools in the same workspace. Solo users or small groups with modest needs can start free, but anyone expecting regular co-editing across many files will likely need a paid plan.

Figma is less suitable when the job is narrowly focused on illustration or presentation creation and the connected product workflow adds little value. In those cases, a more specialized alternative may be a better match.

Pros and cons

Broad connected workflow: Product design, Dev Mode, FigJam, and Slides share a workspace, helping teams keep related work together.
Useful collaboration controls: Comments, branching, and configurable link access support shared work without requiring every recipient to edit.
Starter has real constraints: Co-editing is capped at 3 files and 3 pages per file, limiting its usefulness for teams with several active projects.
Seat choices complicate budgeting: Collab, Dev, and Full seats offer different access, so organizations need to map roles to capabilities rather than assume one price covers everyone.
AI use is metered: Starter’s credits top out at 500 per month, and additional credits incur further cost.

Alternatives

For a wider set of Graphic Design Software, compare tools by the kind of design work you need. Canva is a freemium option with a free plan for one person and a core design editor, templates, and content library; consider it when that individual-oriented starting point is a better fit. ibisPaint offers free and premium versions on mobile and desktop, and may suit someone seeking an illustration-focused option rather than Figma’s collaborative product workflow.

PosterMyWall has a free plan with design and email templates, social publishing, and a content planner, making it relevant when those publishing tasks are central. Easil offers a free plan with 2,500+ templates and a paid Plus plan, a template-oriented alternative. Visme has a free Basic plan with 500MB storage and 50 slides or pages per project; consider it when those project limits fit your presentation or visual-content needs.

Microsoft PowerPoint is available across mobile, desktop, and Web, with a Microsoft 365 Personal plan at 9.99 USD per month; it is a relevant alternative when presentation work is the priority. Affinity is free for individuals and combines vector design, pixel photo editing, page layout, and export tools, making it worth considering for those specific creative tasks. Krita is free and open source, with no subscriptions or trials, for readers who prefer that model.

Verdict

Choose Figma if your team needs a shared home for digital product design, prototyping, developer handoff, and adjacent collaboration. Its connected tools and role-based seats can serve teams from small projects to enterprise environments, but Starter’s narrow editing limits and paid-seat complexity are meaningful trade-offs. Look elsewhere if you need only a focused design or presentation tool and would not benefit from the broader workflow.
