Overview

Filevine is a configurable legal-work platform that brings matter management together with tools for intake, documents, depositions, and billing. It is aimed at law firms, government legal organizations, and corporate legal teams coordinating complex work. Its broad workflow coverage is the draw; custom pricing and no mobile apps may rule it out for teams that want a lower-cost or mobile-first system.

Key features

Matter management combines task tracking, contact management, deadlines, and calendars, giving teams a shared way to coordinate case work. Paired with Document Management—which organizes files, supports advanced search, and enables secure sharing—it is a strong fit for organizations handling substantial matter records. Teams seeking just one narrow legal tool may not need that breadth.

Intake captures, qualifies, and routes leads automatically, with AI-powered features and intake forms. That can help standardize the path from prospective client to matter. Deposition tools cover scheduling, live transcription, AI summaries, and a searchable library, a broader workflow than transcription alone.

LOIS AI Drafting uses matter context to generate, edit, and review documents, with human-verified output. The separate LOIS Explore tier offers AI legal research and drafting, document uploads and questions, and cited results, but it does not connect to Filevine Case Management. That separation matters: Explore can serve as a free entry point for AI work, but it is not a free route into the case-management platform.

The Matters package includes time tracking, invoice management, and online payments, bringing billing tasks into the legal workflow. Filevine also lists native integrations across billing and timekeeping, email and calendar, data visualization, law management, and communication. Its security measures include encryption at rest and in transit, centralized governance controls, and identity and access management. Hosting is on AWS. Customer Success and Support teams provide ongoing guidance, while Certified Implementation Partners can help with setup and workflow customization—useful support for organizations adopting a configurable system.

Pricing

Filevine's package pricing is custom-built and requires a quote, tailored to the organization. The Custom quote plan can include matter management, document management, and billing and payments, with intake, deposition, signature, and AI packages optional. This structure suits organizations that want to assemble a package around their workflows, but makes it harder to compare costs before discussing requirements.

LOIS Explore is free tier, with no credit card required. It includes AI legal research and drafting, document uploads and questions, and cited AI results. It is the clear choice for trying those capabilities at no cost; it does not include Filevine Case Management, and its free trial does not provide access to Case Management either. Filevine packages use custom quote pricing and can combine Matters, Intake, Depositions, and Signatures, with optional package extensions. The trade-off is flexibility over a published price or a simple self-serve package.

Platforms

Filevine is available on web and through an API. It has no mobile apps, which makes it a less natural choice for teams that need dedicated mobile access while working away from a desk.

Who it's for

Filevine is best suited to law firms, state and federal government organizations, and corporate legal teams whose work crosses matters, documents, intake, depositions, and billing. Teams that need several connected legal workflows may benefit from its package approach and implementation support. A small team seeking only one function, a transparent fixed price, or mobile apps should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad coverage spans matter coordination, document management, intake, depositions, and billing, so teams can address several legal workflows in one platform.
Pros: LOIS Explore offers cited AI results and document questions at no cost, without requiring a credit card.
Pros: Native integrations, governance controls, encryption, and implementation support address operational needs beyond core case work.
Cons: Package pricing requires a custom quote, so buyers cannot assess package costs from a published price.
Cons: The free LOIS Explore tier has no Case Management connection, limiting its value to teams looking for a free case-management option.
Cons: No mobile apps makes the platform a weaker fit for mobile-first work.

Alternatives

For deposition-focused work, the right alternative depends on the workflow and access model. eDepoze offers free session services for witnesses and attending guests, making it worth considering when complimentary deposition-session functionality is the priority. DepoFlow has a free plan for viewing and searching synced depositions on Mac and Windows, plus a paid videographer option; it suits users focused on deposition playback rather than a broad legal platform. DepoDash offers pay-as-you-go and subscription plans, with exact pricing not shown, for readers comparing a deposition-specific service. MyVeritext is a free client portal, though court reporting and other services may cost extra. AgileLaw starts with a $195 per host session plan that includes one monthly active host, 5 GB storage, and one active case; choose it when those session-based terms suit the work. CaseLoom uses custom pricing based on requirements and usage. MyDepo is a complimentary online deposition-management option for Network Deposition Services customers. Remote Counsel charges at least one connection per event and has no setup fee for transcript-only streams.

Verdict

Filevine is a strong choice for legal organizations that need several connected workflows and are prepared to configure a package around their needs. Its breadth, intake and deposition tools, and matter-linked drafting make it more compelling as a platform than as a single-purpose tool. Choose another product if you need published package pricing, free Case Management, or mobile apps.
