Overview

The appeal is straightforward: one free client covers three established transfer protocols across the major desktop operating systems. That makes FileZilla Client a practical starting point for routine server transfers, including for users who need help getting a connection configured. Its boundaries are equally important: FileZilla Pro is a separate product with cloud-service support, and FileZilla Server is a separate server product.

Key features

FTP, FTPS and SFTP give users options for common server-transfer setups. For SFTP users, the Wiki includes a guide to key-based authentication. The documentation also covers installation on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, along with tutorials, usage instructions, and help with connection, transfer and network-configuration problems. Those resources make the client more approachable when a setup needs troubleshooting, though they do not expand its protocol or cloud-service scope.

Guidance is not limited to the Wiki: the project also provides a community forum, general FAQ, support section and contact page. Source code, nightly builds, translations, version history and an issue tracker are available too. This gives technically confident users ways to follow the project and gives other users several places to seek help.

Pricing

FileZilla Client is free. The free plan covers FTP, FTPS and SFTP, so the central transfer use case does not require a paid tier. There is no paid plan or trial to weigh against it. The free offer has no stated usage cap, but users needing cloud-service connections should consider FileZilla Pro rather than assume those services are included in this client.

Platforms

FileZilla Client runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. That cross-platform coverage is useful for mixed-OS households or support teams, while people who need a mobile client will need another option.

Who it's for

Choose FileZilla Client if you need a free FTP, FTPS or SFTP client on a desktop operating system and value documentation for setup, authentication and transfer troubleshooting. It is less suitable when your workflow depends on cloud storage integrations or when you need to provide a server; those are distinct product needs in the FileZilla lineup.

Pros and cons

Three transfer protocols at no charge: FTP, FTPS and SFTP are included in the free client, covering familiar server-transfer needs without a paid plan.
Useful setup guidance: The Wiki includes installation instructions, tutorials, troubleshooting and an SFTP key-based authentication guide.
Broad desktop coverage: Linux, macOS and Windows support makes it a workable choice across common desktop environments.
Focused scope: Cloud services are associated with FileZilla Pro, not this client, so users who need those integrations should choose accordingly.

Alternatives

CrossFTP is worth considering if you want another free client that also offers a trial and paid Pro and Enterprise plans, with each paid plan covering one computer.

Cyberduck may suit macOS or Windows users who prioritize GPL licensing and publicly available source code; it is freemium, with a registration key priced at 10.00 USD per month.

WinSCP is a free, open-source Windows option with SFTP, FTP, FTPS, SCP, WebDAV and S3 protocol support, making it a better fit for Windows users who need that broader protocol set.

FTP Rush is another free client and may fit users who need a choice spanning desktop and mobile platforms.

SmartFTP is a paid Windows client with a free trial, an alternative for users considering a commercial option.

FTP Commander is a freemium option for Android and Windows users; its basic plan covers FTP transfers, file and folder management, multiple downloads and command-line mode.

lftp is a free Linux alternative distributed under the GNU GPL.

FTPShell Client offers a Windows trial and a Pro edition priced at 59.95 USD once, including one year of updates.

Verdict

FileZilla Client is a sound choice for anyone who needs free FTP, FTPS or SFTP transfers on Linux, macOS or Windows, especially when practical setup guidance matters. Its defining limitation is its focused protocol scope: choose another product if cloud services or server hosting are requirements.
