Overview

Filmustage is an AI pre-production platform that connects script breakdowns with scheduling, budgeting, and production documents. It suits filmmakers and production teams that want those workflows linked across projects. Its breadth is a strong draw, but the free plan’s one-project cap and partial AI breakdown make it a limited way to run a production.

Designed for films, series, TV shows, short and vertical dramas, podcasts, and treatments, Filmustage also supports VFX breakdown, script analysis, synopses, sides, call sheets, and storyboards. That range makes it useful beyond feature-film scheduling, while the connected workflow is its clearest advantage: script changes can update the breakdown, schedule, budget, and call sheets.

Key features

AI breakdown identifies and tags cast, props, locations, VFX, and wardrobe in scripts of any language or format. This can give a production team a shared starting point for planning, though full AI breakdown projects require an active Director's Cut plan to open.

Scheduling combines a stripboard with a drag-and-drop calendar, time estimates, location tagging, conflict detection, and an AI production agent. Budgeting builds categories from breakdown and schedule data, with location-based cost estimates, fringes, and deductions. Together, these tools link planning decisions instead of treating the schedule and budget as separate documents.

Teams can share projects, set access by feature, annotate scripts in shared layers, and use Team Chat. Compatibility with Movie Magic Scheduling, Gorilla, and Final Draft, plus PDF, Excel, MMS, and MMB exports, helps teams exchange work with other production tools.

For organizations handling sensitive materials, Filmustage states that it is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, has TPN Blue status, and undergoes regular independent penetration testing. It says uploaded materials are not used to train or improve AI models, and AI features run in inference-only mode. Scripts are stored on US-based Google Cloud servers; Auth0 handles authentication, with multifactor authentication available. Support is available through in-product chat and email, with guides and troubleshooting in the Help Center.

Pricing

The Free plan is free and allows one active project. It includes non-AI tools, a demo project with a full breakdown, and a partial AI breakdown that processes 20% of scenes. That makes it useful for exploring the workflow, but the scene cap and project limit constrain real production use.

Director's Cut costs 55.00 USD per month, billed $660/year billed annually, with a stated saving of $288 (30% off). It includes unlimited active projects, full AI features, all export formats, and 1,700 coins per billing cycle. Unused coins roll over while the subscription remains active. This is the practical choice for individuals or teams needing full breakdowns and ongoing production work. The pricing note also says paid plans start at $79/mo, so confirm the applicable price before subscribing.

Enterprise has custom pricing for studios and production companies. It adds dedicated support, tailored contracts, data backups, fine-tuned AI models, and advanced security features, making it the plan aimed at larger organizations. A free trial is available.

Platforms

Filmustage is available on the web. It supports PDF script import, cast and crew tracking, location management, and call sheets.

Who it's for

Filmustage is best suited to filmmakers and production teams that want breakdown, scheduling, budgeting, and call sheets connected in one platform, especially when script revisions need to flow through several planning documents. Its Enterprise plan targets studios and large production companies. A solo user or small team that needs only basic scheduling may find the free tier too restricted to serve as a working plan.

Pros and cons

Connected production workflow: Script changes can update the breakdown, schedule, budget, and call sheets, reducing the need to treat each as a separate process.
Broad planning coverage: AI breakdown, scheduling, budgeting, VFX breakdown, and production documents suit teams managing more than a stripboard alone.
Interoperability: Movie Magic Scheduling, Gorilla, and Final Draft compatibility, alongside several export formats, supports handoffs to other production tools.
Restrictive free tier: One active project and AI processing for only 20% of scenes make the free plan a preview rather than a full production option.
Subscription required for full AI breakdown projects: Projects with full AI breakdown require an active Director's Cut plan to open, a material constraint for teams deciding whether to keep working in the free tier.
AI allowance is metered: Director's Cut includes 1,700 coins per billing cycle, so teams should account for usage; rollover applies only while the subscription remains active.

Alternatives

Compare options in Film Production Scheduling Software. Choose Gorilla Scheduling if you want a scheduling tool with a free plan and options across macOS, web, and Windows; its free plan limits collaboration, certain reports and exports, fringes, and integrated Ratebook access. Slatefox is worth considering for its web-based script breakdown plan at 19.00 EUR per month, or its Studio plan at 59.00 EUR per month for several productions.

StudioBinder may suit a team that can work within a free plan capped at one project, 10 contacts, and small allowances for production elements. PreProducer offers single-project plans with one-time booking terms, which may fit someone seeking a project-based option rather than Filmustage’s recurring subscription. Studiovity is another freemium option, with apps for mobile and desktop as well as web.

CineLog offers a free plan for one active project, 50 MB media storage, and up to two collaborators, so it may fit a small team with modest storage needs. Production Slate has a free plan with set caps for projects, budget items, crew, shoot days, and call-sheet sends. Prescene offers a free screenplay editor with unlimited drafts but no AI usage, which may suit writers focused on drafting rather than AI-assisted production planning.

Verdict

Choose Filmustage if your production needs script breakdown, scheduling, budgeting, and call sheets to stay connected as a script changes. The linked workflow and range of production tools are its strongest reasons to subscribe. Look elsewhere if you need only a basic schedule, want a more generous free working plan, or prefer a project-based payment model.
