Overview

Typecast offers text-to-speech on the web and mobile, alongside an API for app and content workflows. The Studio’s more than 700 advertised AI voices and adjustable emotion, speed, and dynamics give creators room to shape delivery. The breadth is appealing, but the Studio’s unlimited generation and playback do not mean unlimited finished audio: downloads spend credits.

Key features

Studio voice creation

Unlimited generation and playback on every Studio plan make it practical to revise scripts and compare delivery before committing credits to downloads. That separation is useful for iteration, but it makes the download allowance—not the number of previews—the production constraint. The free Studio tier provides 3,000 lifetime download credits, about five minutes, trial voices, three projects, 1 GB of storage, and requires attribution. It is a short evaluation option, not a durable publishing allowance.

API and automation

The API is designed for content automation, app services, and conversational agents. Its stated streaming latency is 170–210 ms, relevant for interactive speech, and its SDKs and integrations include Python, JavaScript, Zapier, Google Sheets, n8n, and Make. The described uses span creator narration, audiobooks, podcasts, conversational agents, AI tutors, and contact-center applications. API free-tier audio is noncommercial and requires attribution, so commercial projects need a paid API plan.

Voice cloning, formats, and security

Paid Studio plans include one or more voice-cloning slots, depending on tier. Typecast supports MP3 and WAV, but not SSML, which may matter to developers who need that markup workflow. Its privacy policy describes access controls, encryption of unique identifying information, security software, physical access controls, and breach notification procedures.

Pricing

Typecast is freemium, with a free trial and Studio plans billed monthly. The free Studio plan is $0.00 USD per free and includes 3,000 lifetime credits, three projects, 1 GB of storage, and 720p video exports. The lifetime download cap and trial voices make it suitable for trying the workflow, not regular output.

Basic costs 5.00 USD per month and adds 30,000 credits per month, one voice-cloning slot, 5 GB of storage, and 1080p exports. It is the entry paid tier for a solo creator who can work within that allowance. Plus is 19.00 USD per month for 40,000 monthly credits, one cloning slot, 30 GB, and 4K exports; the relatively small credit increase over Basic means its strongest case is the storage and resolution upgrade. Pro costs 29.00 USD per month for 75,000 credits, two cloning slots, 50 GB, and 4K exports. Business is 69.00 USD per month for 200,000 credits, ten cloning slots, 100 GB, and 4K exports, better suited to larger production needs than a solo user.

For API use, Free (API) is $0.00 USD per month, with 15,000 credits, concurrency of two, noncommercial use, and required attribution. Lite (API) costs 15.00 USD per month and includes 200,000 credits, concurrency of five, 50 custom voice slots, and rates of $0.075 per 1k credits with overage at $0.09 per 1k credits. The paid API tier is the clearer fit for commercial deployment; the free tier’s licensing limits rule it out for that purpose. Enterprise inquiries go through the support team.

Platforms

Typecast is available on web, Android, and iOS, with API access for software integrations. The mobile app supports syncing across devices, useful for moving between phone and other work, while the API suits teams incorporating voice generation into services.

Who it's for

Choose Typecast if you need expressive voiceover controls, a substantial advertised voice library, or an API with automation integrations. It is less suited to users who need extensive free downloads, commercial API use without a paid plan, or SSML support. The Studio’s monthly credit tiers and API’s separate licensing terms make it important to match the plan to the way you intend to publish.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 700 Studio voices with adjustable emotion, speed, and dynamics offer meaningful control over narration.
Pros: Unlimited Studio generation and playback allow iteration before downloads consume credits.
Pros: API SDKs and integrations connect speech generation to common development and automation workflows.
Cons: The free Studio plan’s 3,000 lifetime download credits amount to about five minutes, limiting ongoing use.
Cons: Free API audio is noncommercial and requires attribution, so commercial deployment requires a paid tier.
Cons: No SSML support may make the API a poor fit for workflows built around that markup.

Alternatives

For a wider comparison, browse Text-to-Speech Software or AI Voice Generators.

Altered Studio is worth considering if its free plan’s local voice cloning, 10,000 AI Tokens, or Voice Morphing better matches your needs; that plan is noncommercial and requires attribution.
Google Cloud Text-to-Speech may fit usage priced by character: its Standard voices include 0 to 4 million characters free, then cost US$0.000004 per character (US$4 per 1 million characters).
LOVO AI is another freemium option, with a free plan limited to five projects and a Pro+ tier offering 20 voice-generation hours per month and unlimited projects.
IReadAll is a reader-focused option with 100,000 Reader characters per month and ten reader languages on its free plan, plus a one-time 10-minute audio trial.
KreaWave offers a one-time welcome credit for ten minutes of audio and one generation at a time on its free plan.
Unmixr Dubbing is an alternative for dubbing: its free tier includes 5,000 signup credits and watermarked exports up to three minutes.
Vimotion offers a free pilot for one hero video up to 60 seconds, two social cuts, brand-kit onboarding, and 1080p MP4 export.
Notevibes has a permanent free plan with text-to-speech generation, no watermark, and no credit card requirement.

Verdict

Typecast is a strong choice for creators who want to refine expressive voiceovers and developers who need an API with automation connections. Its large Studio library and low entry paid plan are compelling, but budget for downloads and choose a paid API tier for commercial use. Look elsewhere if SSML is essential or if the free Studio allowance must support ongoing publishing.
