Overview

Black Forest Labs, founded in 2024 and based in Freiburg, Germany, positions FLUX for marketing, product visualization, creative production, design, entertainment and e-commerce. Image creation, editing and video generation sit within the same family, making FLUX a stronger fit for workflows that span several creative tasks than for someone who only needs a basic image generator.

Users can work in a browser playground, call an API or deploy downloadable weights on their own infrastructure. API usage includes full commercial rights without a separate license. Open-weight terms depend on the model: FLUX.2 [klein] 4B allows free commercial use under Apache 2.0, while FLUX.2 [dev] is non-commercial and has no hosted API endpoint.

Key features

Image and video tools

FLUX.2 generates and edits images up to 4 MP, with multi-reference editing, hex color control and text rendering. These controls suit branded and product-focused work where references, palette consistency or embedded text matter. The 4 MP cap may not suit projects that require larger outputs.

FLUX 3 generates video with synchronized audio from text or images and can continue an existing clip, up to 20 seconds. The short maximum makes it better suited to compact creative assets than longer-form video production. FLUX Tools add outpainting, object erasing, virtual try-on, video upscaling and deblurring endpoints, extending the range beyond generation alone.

Deployment, privacy and support

Self-hosting gives teams infrastructure control, while the API offers a route to commercial use without a separate license. The privacy policy says submitted prompts, uploads, tasks and outputs may be used to train and improve models; users can opt out by email. That deserves attention when handling sensitive or proprietary material. The maker identifies ISO 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type II certifications, links to a Help Desk and offers dedicated support for high-throughput enterprise workloads. Failed or moderated generations do not consume credits, a useful billing safeguard.

Pricing

FLUX combines free open weights with monthly and pay-as-you-go API options. Monthly rates are priced per image, with additional megapixel and reference-image charges; each FLUX.2 option has a 4 MP maximum output. The monthly rate alone is therefore not the full cost for higher-resolution work or reference-heavy workflows.

Option	Price and terms	Best fit
FLUX.2 [max]	0.07 USD per month, billed; additional megapixels $0.03/MP and reference images $0.03/MP	Teams choosing the max tier, provided they account for per-MP charges.
FLUX.2 [pro]	0.03 USD per month, billed; additional megapixels $0.015/MP and reference images $0.015/MP	Users wanting the pro tier at a lower listed rate than max.
FLUX.2 [klein] 9B	0.02 USD per month, billed; additional megapixels $0.002/MP and reference images $0.002/MP	Cost-conscious use of the 9B option, with extra resolution and references still chargeable.
FLUX.2 [klein] 4B	0.01 USD per month, billed; additional megapixels $0.001/MP and reference images $0.001/MP	The lowest listed paid monthly rate, with the same kinds of usage charges at lower rates.
FLUX.2 [flex]	0.05 USD per month, billed; $0.05 per first and additional MP and $0.05/MP for reference images	Users who prefer per-megapixel billing, though its listed per-MP charges are higher than the klein options.
Open weights — FLUX.2 [klein] 4B	Free; Apache 2.0, free commercial use, self-hosted weights	Commercial self-hosting without a license fee.
Open weights — FLUX.2 [dev]	Free; free, non-commercial under the FLUX Non-Commercial license; self-hosted, no hosted API endpoint	Non-commercial self-hosting; unsuitable when commercial rights or a hosted endpoint are required.
Pay as you go — FLUX.2 [klein] 4B	0.01 USD per once; $0.014 for the first MP, $0.001 per additional MP and $0.001/MP per reference image	Occasional use; output up to 4 MP, resolution rounded up to whole MP.
Pay as you go — FLUX.2 [klein] 9B	0.02 USD per once; $0.015 for the first MP, $0.002 per additional MP and $0.002/MP per reference image	Occasional 9B use; output up to 4 MP, resolution rounded up to whole MP.
Pay as you go — FLUX.2 [pro]	0.03 USD per once; $0.03 for the first MP, $0.015 per additional MP and $0.015/MP per reference image	Infrequent pro-tier work; output up to 4 MP, resolution rounded up to whole MP.
Pay as you go — FLUX.2 [flex]	0.05 USD per once; $0.05 per MP, no per-image minimums	Per-MP billing without a per-image minimum; resolution determines the charge.
Pay as you go — FLUX.2 [max]	0.07 USD per once; $0.07 for the first MP, $0.03 per additional MP and $0.03/MP per reference image	Infrequent max-tier work; output up to 4 MP, resolution rounded up to whole MP.

The open-weight 4B option avoids a license fee but requires customer infrastructure; the dev weights are free only for non-commercial use. Pay-as-you-go avoids a monthly commitment, while monthly rates may suit ongoing use, but both approaches require budgeting for usage-based charges. Failed or moderated generations do not consume credits.

Platforms

FLUX is available through web, API, Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted deployment. That range serves both browser users and teams integrating models into software or running weights on their own systems. The maker names Mistral, Magnific, Adobe, Microsoft, Picsart, Gamma and OpenArt among its integrations.

Who it's for

FLUX is a strong candidate for creative and commercial teams producing marketing assets, product visuals or other work that benefits from image editing, reference controls and short-form video. Developers can use the API, while teams prioritizing deployment control can choose self-hosted weights. It is less suitable when larger-than-4-MP image output is essential, when sensitive prompts cannot be used for training, or when a self-hosted model's license does not fit the intended use.

Pros and cons

Pros

Image generation, editing and short video generation cover several stages of creative production.
Browser, API and self-hosted access let teams choose between direct use, integration and infrastructure control.
FLUX.2 [klein] 4B open weights allow free commercial use under Apache 2.0.
Failed and moderated generations do not consume credits.
Named security certifications and dedicated support for high-throughput enterprise workloads address operational needs.

Cons

FLUX.2 output is capped at 4 MP, limiting projects that need larger images.
Prompts, uploads, tasks and outputs may be used for training unless users opt out by email.
Open-weight commercial rights vary by model, and FLUX.2 [dev] is non-commercial with no hosted API endpoint.
Per-megapixel and reference-image charges mean listed monthly rates do not capture all usage costs.

Alternatives

Consider Adobe Firefly if its Android and iOS support or daily-generation-limited free plan better fits your access needs. Leonardo.Ai is another freemium option, with 150 fast tokens per day and a 150-token bank on its free plan. Choose Sogni if unlimited free on-device rendering on Mac and iOS and access to more than 150 open-source models locally are priorities.

Recraft may suit readers who want a free plan with 30 daily credits. ImagineArt offers 100 daily credits on its free plan, with paid subscriptions unlocking Pro models and more generations. Ideogram is worth comparing if its free weekly credits or Plus plan's 1,000 monthly credits and eight running or queued generations match your needs. Deep Dream Generator offers free image generation with energy and storage based on user level. PixAI offers 10,000 daily credits on its free plan.

Verdict

Choose FLUX if your workflow needs image generation and editing alongside video, and you value the choice of API or self-hosted deployment. Its most compelling route for commercial self-hosting is FLUX.2 [klein] 4B; API use provides commercial rights without a separate license. Look elsewhere if the 4 MP ceiling is too restrictive, prompt-training terms are unacceptable, or the model license does not fit your use.
