Overview

Fontstand combines a library of fonts with filters and examples for finding and evaluating typefaces. The same fonts can be used in desktop and iPad work, as well as websites. That breadth makes it useful when a project spans formats, though the right license and calculator choices still matter before use.

Key features

Free font testing lets users explore fonts before spending money, making Fontstand a sensible starting point for projects where the typeface is not yet settled. Once a font is chosen, monthly rentals cost 10% of that font’s real price and can be shared with a team. After 12 months of renting, users can keep the font for use forever on desktop, iPad, or web. That path can suit evolving projects, but the family-specific price means the long-term cost varies.

Other options include subscribing to a specific foundry and an unlimited iPad fonts plan, which provides every available font in the library on iPad. The webfont calculator covers three-hour trials, 30-day rentals, shared rentals, hosted webfonts, and an after-12-month paid-in-full option. Fontstand supports web licensing, variable fonts, and WOFF and WOFF2 formats.

Desktop downloads support macOS 13 and newer and Windows 10 and newer, with legacy versions for older systems. The iPad app supports iPadOS 13 and newer. Creating an account requires a valid email address.

Pricing

Fontstand mixes free testing with paid licensing choices. The rental model gives access month by month, while the calculator’s family-dependent pricing makes it difficult to assume one price across the library.

Free font testing: Free. A no-cost way to try fonts; it is for testing rather than an all-fonts subscription.
Foundry subscription: custom pricing. This suits users seeking a subscription to one specific foundry; it is less useful when access across foundries is the priority.
Font rental: custom pricing, billed monthly at 10% of the font’s real price. Rentals can be shared with a team, and after 12 months the font can be kept forever. The monthly rate depends on the selected family.
Unlimited iPad fonts: custom pricing, billed monthly. It provides every available library font on iPad, but is specifically an iPad option rather than a stated desktop-wide plan.

The calculator also offers three-hour trials, 30-day rentals, shared rentals, hosted webfonts, and an after-12-month paid-in-full option. Check the selected family and calculator options before committing, especially if comparing rental with a longer-term license.

Platforms

Fontstand supports iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. Its desktop downloads cover current macOS and Windows versions as well as legacy versions, and its iPad app supports iPadOS 13 and newer.

Who it's for

Fontstand is a strong fit for designers who want to compare typefaces, test them in real work, and retain the option to move from rental to permanent use. Teams can share rentals, and eligible graphic design students can receive €20 of credit per academic year for non-commercial use after providing a valid student ID. Participating design schools and colleges can apply for a program that lets students rent fonts at half the regular rental price.

It is less suited to buyers who need a fixed, predictable price before selecting a family, or to users who only want a specific known font and do not need discovery or rental flexibility.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free testing and a broad discovery approach help narrow choices before purchase; monthly rentals can become permanent after 12 months; shared rentals and use across desktop, iPad, and web support collaborative, multi-format projects.
Cons: Rental costs depend on the selected font, so budgeting requires checking the calculator; foundry subscriptions and unlimited iPad access are monthly paid options whose prices depend on custom pricing; the unlimited-font plan is focused on iPad.

Alternatives

Choose Adobe Fonts if a free basic library of about 5,500 fonts fits the need and access through eligible trial, free, team, enterprise, or education accounts is preferable. OH! MY FONT. is worth considering for a free plan with 300 typefaces and unlimited character counts for 14 days, or an annual plan at 26400.00 JPY per year with commercial use. For a free-first option with free font downloads and an online text generator, consider FontSpace; individual font licenses vary.

Fontspring, Font Bundles, Font Bros, Morisawa Fonts, and Type Network are other font options to compare. Browse the Font Marketplaces directory for more choices.

Verdict

Fontstand is a good choice for designers who want to discover and test fonts, then rent them with the possibility of keeping them permanently after 12 months. Its strongest advantage is that flexible path, including shared rentals and desktop, iPad, and web use. Look elsewhere if a fixed, easily forecast price matters more than trying and licensing a specific family.
