Overview

FreeEed extracts text and metadata, uses OCR, and supports predictive coding to help make document collections searchable and reviewable. It is designed for large volumes across data centers, multi-cloud environments, and local networks, though the Community Edition's 1 GB cap makes it a poor fit for substantial case work.

It supports common eDiscovery inputs including PST, MSG, and EML email, DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files, PDFs, images, ZIP archives, and other formats. Outputs include EDRM XML load files, Concordance DAT files, and native exports compatible with Relativity, Nuix, and other platforms. That breadth helps teams move processed material into established review and production systems.

Key features

Search and extraction: Full-text search, text and metadata extraction, and OCR cover core processing needs. OCR and search are present in the free tier, but more advanced review tools are reserved for Professional.
Review assistance: Professional adds AI Advisor, PII detection, and Matter Summary, alongside custodian management. These additions make the paid tier more relevant to active legal review than the limited free edition.
Production: Production-ready exports are included in Professional; the free plan has no production-ready export. Teams needing deliverables for downstream systems should not treat Community Edition as a complete matter workflow.
Deployment and data: Local deployment keeps documents in the user's environment, and SSL encrypts data in transit. Enterprise offers on-premise or cloud deployment and security and compliance options, including SOC 2, HIPAA, and FedRAMP readiness.
Integration and support: Enterprise includes custom integrations for document or case management systems and dedicated SLA-backed priority support. A free demo request is available for organizations assessing the offering.

Pricing

FreeEed uses a freemium model, with Professional starting at $50/mo and a 30-day free trial.

Community Edition — 0.00 USD per free: Billed $0 /forever, it includes unlimited matters within 1 GB, full-text search, and OCR. The low capacity and lack of PII detection, AI Advisor, Matter Summary, and production-ready export make it suitable for small-scale evaluation, not full production review.
FreeEed Professional — 50.00 USD per month: Billed $50 /mo, with OCR, full-text search, AI Advisor, PII detection, Matter Summary, custodian management, and production-ready export. Its 30-day free trial gives teams a defined period to evaluate the paid workflow; it is the practical choice when case review and production are needed.
Enterprise — custom pricing: Includes large-scale deployments, custom integrations, dedicated SLA-backed support, on-premise or cloud options, and security and compliance options. It fits organizations with broader deployment or support requirements, but is not a published fixed-price tier.

Platforms

FreeEed supports Windows, Mac, and Linux, with native installers for all three. It also lists VirtualBox and Amazon AWS cloud support, and offers a portable ZIP pack for any operating system. Unstable daily builds may contain bugs, so they are a less suitable choice for dependable production work than the regular installer options.

Who it's for

FreeEed suits legal review teams, enterprise search groups, and forensic investigators who need document extraction, OCR, search, and eDiscovery exports. Its local deployment option is useful when documents should remain in the user's environment. Community Edition is appropriate only when the 1 GB limit and missing production features are acceptable; larger or production-oriented matters point to Professional, while large deployments and custom integrations point to Enterprise.

Pros and cons

Pros

Supports common email, Office, PDF, image, and archive formats, with EDRM XML, Concordance DAT, and native platform exports for handoff.
Offers Windows, Mac, Linux, local, and cloud deployment options, with local deployment keeping documents in the user's environment.
Professional combines OCR and search with AI Advisor, PII detection, Matter Summary, custodian management, and production-ready export.

Cons

Community Edition is capped at 1 GB and excludes several review features and production-ready export, limiting its value for substantial matters.
Enterprise uses custom pricing, so organizations cannot compare it against a fixed published fee.
Daily builds may contain bugs, making them a risky option for production use.

Alternatives

eDiscovery Software is the broader category directory for comparing options. Consider GoldFynch if a web-based service and a free case with defined storage, processing, and 90-day expiry limits better match the matter. Intella may suit a single-user workflow with stated ESI capacity tiers and web or Windows platforms. CloudNine is another paid option, with self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms and a volume-based subscription model with a six-month minimum commitment.

Exterro eDiscovery is a web-based alternative with pricing details available through a demo request. iCONECT is a paid option available through API, self-hosted, and web platforms. Casepoint eDiscovery uses tailored pricing based on selected applications and use cases, with no charge for products not used. Epiq Discover offers flat-rate, per-gigabyte transactional, or subscription pricing, with pricing details not published. Knovos Discovery is another option for organizations considering enterprise agreements and custom pricing.

Verdict

Choose FreeEed if your team needs document extraction, OCR, search, and eDiscovery exports across local, cloud, or self-hosted deployments. Professional is the sensible starting point for real review and production work; the free tier's 1 GB ceiling and missing production features are its central drawback. Organizations needing large-scale deployment, custom integrations, or SLA-backed support should consider Enterprise, while teams wanting a complete production workflow at no cost should look elsewhere.
