Overview

Children progress from tapping guided points to tracing and then writing letters independently. Visual and auditory feedback, including correction of each line as it is drawn, gives beginners prompts throughout the exercise. That structure is useful for children still learning letter formation, but less compelling for those who already write confidently.

The app is designed for children ages three to eight, while the target age range is also given as two to six. It covers handwriting alongside phonics, numbers, and spelling. The help page lists English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Dutch, Japanese, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Danish, and Arabic. English school users can choose Handwriting Without Tears, Zaner-Bloser, or D’Nealian styles.

Key features

The three-stage progression is LetterSchool’s strongest learning feature: guided points lead into tracing, then independent writing, with feedback during the activity. That makes it better suited to early practice than to open-ended writing. Offline access and printable activities give families options beyond on-screen exercises, while three child profiles can accommodate a small household.

The maker describes the app as ad-free, without social media, privacy-protective, and equipped with restricted settings. Its privacy policy says it does not seek to collect personally identifiable information directly from children under 13 and does not collect or store payment data. These safeguards are relevant for parents, but do not change the narrow scope of the free activities.

Pricing

LetterSchool is freemium, with paid access from $1.92/mo (annual) and a seven-day trial referenced. The Free app is free and includes the first five letters in uppercase and lowercase, five shapes, and three CVC flashcards covering nine words. That is enough to sample the format, but a limited base for sustained practice across the app’s subjects.

Monthly, quarterly, and yearly subscriptions auto-renew. The trial lasts seven days, and cancellation is through App Store settings. Families unable to afford the subscription can apply for a free subscription; children in Afghanistan can access LetterSchool for free.

The School student license costs 9.99 USD per once, is purchased through Apple School Manager, and is for iOS only. Orders of more than 20 licenses receive a 50% discount. This is the relevant option for schools seeking student licenses, rather than a family subscription.

Platforms

The consumer app is available on Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows, with offline access. The school offering, LetterSchool – Block Letters, is currently available only on iOS. Schools using other platforms should not assume the student license covers them.

Who it's for

LetterSchool is a good fit for families with young children beginning handwriting and early literacy, especially when visual and sound feedback can help keep practice guided. Its three child profiles suit a small family, and printable activities provide another format for practice. It is less suitable for older learners or children who need broad, advanced writing instruction.

The school version supports pre-K through grades one to three. Handwriting levels generally target younger grades, while spelling levels are aimed at older pupils, so schools should match the activities to the age and subject they intend to teach.

Pros and cons

Pros: A progression from guided points to independent writing supports beginners instead of relying on unprompted repetition.
Pros: Feedback on each line, offline access, printable activities, and three child profiles offer practical support for home use.
Pros: The language list includes 12 languages, and English school users have three handwriting styles to choose from.
Cons: The free plan covers only five letters, five shapes, and three CVC flashcards, so it is a sampler rather than a full course.
Cons: Subscriptions auto-renew and require cancellation through App Store settings; the school license is restricted to iOS.
Cons: The young age focus and structured letter exercises make it a poor match for confident writers or older students.

Alternatives

For handwriting-focused choices, browse Handwriting Practice Apps. Families comparing broader early-learning options can browse Preschool Learning Apps.

Choose Kanji Dojo instead if open-source software or broader platform coverage matters: it is free and runs on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Writing Wizard is another free-download option; its remaining letters and custom words require an in-app purchase or subscription.

Copybook Club may suit iOS users who want worksheet generation: its free plan allows three worksheet generations per week, up to two pages each, and PDF export. Handwriting Repeater is a free option for repeating sentences, with no account required and no limits on sentences or repetitions.

For Chinese-character practice, consider Hanzi Writer; Nazoru is another choice. Cursive: Learn Cursive may be a better fit for learners focused on cursive. iTrace offers a free version with handwriting warm-ups, three letters, and one interactive scene.

Verdict

LetterSchool is best for families introducing handwriting and early literacy to young children who benefit from a gradual, feedback-rich routine. Its broad language list, offline access, and beginner-friendly progression make it a purposeful learning app. Look elsewhere if the free tier needs to support ongoing practice, if the learner is beyond early handwriting, or if a school needs a platform other than iOS.
