Overview

QSave is a free, open-source desktop backup utility for players who want their game saves stored in their own Google Drive. It is best suited to Windows and macOS users managing libraries across those systems. The trade-off is a focused, personal-storage workflow rather than a separate backup service, with only five retained backups per game.

QSave supports Steam, GOG, Epic, and Battle.net titles and can move saves between computers through cross-platform path remapping. Its current homepage release is v1.8.0, dated May 31, 2026.

Key features

Detection and manual setup

QSave searches installed games and a detection database covering more than 19,000 games. Store filters for Steam, GOG, Epic, and Battle.net make a large library easier to narrow down. If a title is not recognized, you can add it by selecting its save folder manually. That fallback extends coverage, but it assumes you know where the game stores its files.

Drive backups and versioning

Backups remain in your own Google Drive, so QSave does not require a separate storage account or subscription. It skips an upload when save files have not changed, avoiding redundant transfers. The repository says it retains up to five backups per game: useful for recovering from a recent overwrite, but restrictive if you need a long historical record.

Restore and conflict handling

You can select a backup in Google Drive and restore it with one click. Path remapping is designed to keep saves portable between Windows and macOS computers. QSave can restore games that exist only in the cloud, send a restore to a custom location, and delete individual cloud versions. It also warns about possible restore or synchronization conflicts, an important safeguard when local and cloud copies have diverged.

Background operation and security

The application can stay in the system tray and optionally launch at startup, allowing a backup workflow without repeatedly opening the main interface. Developer guidance says Google OAuth credentials should be stored in the operating system's secret store, keeping authentication data in the platform's protected credential facility.

Pricing

QSave has one Free plan at Free. It is free and open source and backs up saves to your own Google Drive. There are no paid tiers, seat charges, or separate storage quotas stated for the plan; your Drive remains the storage destination. The five-backup-per-game retention limit still applies, so free access does not mean unlimited version history.

Platforms

QSave runs on Windows and macOS. The site provides separate macOS downloads for Apple Silicon and Intel machines. Windows and macOS may display an installation warning because the project does not maintain annually renewed code-signing certificates; the site says Ko-fi contributions help fund those certificates. That warning is a practical installation consideration, particularly for less technical users.

Who it's for

QSave fits players with Windows and macOS PCs who want cloud synchronization without handing save files to a dedicated backup vendor. It is particularly useful for people switching between those platforms, maintaining several store libraries, or wanting cloud-only recovery and custom restore destinations. It is less suitable if you need Android or Linux support, a storage provider other than Google Drive, or more than five historical versions for each game.

Pros and cons

Pros

Uses your Google Drive: saves stay in storage you control rather than a separate QSave account.
Broad detection: a database of more than 19,000 games and filters for four major PC stores reduce manual setup.
Flexible recovery: one-click restore, cross-platform path remapping, cloud-only recovery, custom destinations, and per-version deletion cover varied recovery needs.
Efficient background workflow: unchanged files are skipped, and tray operation with optional startup launch reduces routine intervention.

Cons

Five-version ceiling: longer-term recovery history is limited for each game.
Google Drive dependency: readers seeking another cloud provider need a different tool.
Windows and macOS only: Linux and mobile players are outside its supported desktop platforms.
Installer warnings: missing annually renewed code-signing certificates can make installation less reassuring.
Manual unsupported-game setup: adding a game yourself requires locating its save folder.

Alternatives

Game Save Managers is the broader category to browse when you want to compare several save-backup approaches.

Choose SaveState instead if Android or Linux support, local backups, or optional cloud synchronization matter more than a Google Drive-only workflow; it requires no account.

Ludusavi is a free, MIT-licensed portable executable for Windows, Linux, and Mac, making it a stronger fit when portability and Linux coverage are priorities.

Playnite Save Manager suits Windows users already centered on Playnite, although its cloud sync is experimental.

Game Backup Monitor is worth choosing for unlimited games and 7-Zip compression; cloud use requires your own provider and sync client.

Gamekeeper offers Windows support with local, FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, SMB/CIFS, and S3 storage options; its free Multi-Space allowance is limited to three per game.

GSM is another free, open-source option for Linux and Windows.

Checkpoint64 fits readers wanting team-oriented spaces and a paid Pro tier, with a free plan capped at 20 MiB per space.

Game Save Genie is a free, no-subscription choice that uses your own cloud storage across Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted deployments.

Verdict

QSave is a good choice for Windows and macOS players who want broad game detection, cross-platform restore, and backups kept in their personal Google Drive at no cost. Look elsewhere if you need Linux or mobile support, a different cloud provider, or a deeper version history than five backups per game.
