Overview

Valentina is an open-source patternmaking application for people who want clothing patterns to respond to sizing rules rather than remain fixed drawings. It suits independent patternmakers and small apparel workflows built around 2D drafting and grading; it is not a garment-simulation suite.

Its strongest case is parametric sizing across Linux, macOS, and Windows. The trade-off is a fragmented free-to-paid offering: free users get source code and community support, but not current binaries, the manual, or developer support.

Key features

Parametric patterns and grading

Measurements, increments, formulas, and construction rules can automatically rearrange patterns. That is useful when a pattern needs to adapt systematically across sizes, and Valentina also supports size grading. It focuses on 2D patternmaking, with no 3D garment simulation, textile design tools, or tech-pack creation, so teams needing those parts of an apparel workflow will need another tool alongside it.

Files and compatibility

Exports include SVG, PDF, PNG, OBJ, PS, EPS, and DXF, giving users several options for sharing or using finished pattern work. DXF import is unavailable: Valentina cannot derive the information its pattern format requires from vector files. It can open .val files from Seamly2D, but Seamly2D cannot open Valentina files in return; that one-way compatibility matters when collaborators use both applications.

Development builds are snapshots for testing, not a safer route to the latest work: patterns saved in them may not open in the installed version or convert back. Users working on important patterns should factor that risk into whether they use development builds.

The FAQ says commercial work is permitted without restrictions on the kind of work produced. Valentina is GPLv3+ licensed.

Pricing

Valentina has three plans. The free tier is appealing for users able to work from source code and rely on community support, but it does not include current binaries, a user manual, or developer support.

Plan	Price	Includes	Best suited to
Free	Free	Source code access, historical versions, community support	Users comfortable with source code and community help
Basic	8.26 EUR per month	Current binaries, developer support, user manual, private Telegram community, development builds	Users who want an installed current version and direct support
Premium	16.51 EUR per month	Basic features, current binaries for legacy platform versions, multi-size table files	Users who need older-platform binaries or multi-size tables

Basic is the practical step up for users who want current binaries, documentation, and developer help. It excludes legacy platform binaries and multi-size table files, which are reserved for Premium. Neither paid plan's included development builds remove the compatibility risk of saving patterns in snapshots. The free tier has no stated usage quota, but its missing binaries may be a significant obstacle for users who do not want to work from source code.

Platforms

Valentina supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. Stable downloads include Windows 7+ 32-bit packages and Windows 10+ 64-bit packages; macOS packages cover 10.15+ Intel, 11+ Apple Silicon, and 12+ Universal. Linux is offered as an AppImage. These options cover a range of desktop systems, including older Windows and Mac configurations, though the plan chosen determines whether current or legacy platform binaries are included.

The website's privacy policy says logs may collect IP addresses, browser type, ISP, timestamps, transition or exit pages, and possibly clicks.

Who it's for

Valentina is best for patternmakers who want measurement-driven 2D patterns and grading, especially those willing to work within its file-compatibility limits. Its permission for commercial work makes it viable for professional output as well as personal projects. It is less suitable for users who need DXF import, 3D simulation, or a complete toolkit spanning textile design and tech packs.

Pros and cons

Pros

Parametric sizing uses measurements and construction rules, making pattern changes responsive to defined inputs.
Commercial work is permitted, and the free tier provides source access and historical versions.
Desktop support spans Linux, macOS, and Windows, with packages for multiple processor and operating-system generations.
Exports include both document formats and vector-oriented formats, including PDF, SVG, and DXF.

Cons

The free tier has no current binaries, manual, or developer support, limiting its convenience for users who expect an installed application and direct help.
DXF files can be exported but not imported, which restricts workflows that begin with existing vector patterns.
Compatibility with Seamly2D runs only one way, complicating shared work across the two tools.
Development-build patterns may not transfer back to the installed version, creating avoidable file risk for production work.
There is no 3D simulation, textile design, or tech-pack functionality.

Alternatives

For another free, open-source desktop patternmaking option, consider Seamly2D; Valentina can open its .val files, though the reverse is not true. Choose PAD System instead if its paid plans, annual Basic option, and stated allowance of 20 pattern pieces and 3 sizes better match a constrained grading workflow. CLO 3D offers a paid product with a free trial for macOS and Windows, making it an option to evaluate when those platform and trial terms suit your selection process.

garment.dev has a free web Hobby plan with caps including 2 patterns, 1 tech pack, and 1 moodboard; consider it if those limits fit a browser-based workflow. TUKA3D is a paid Windows option with a free trial and a stated Windows 11, 64-bit, and hardware requirement. Browzwear VStitcher has a Freelancer plan at 75.00 USD per month for 1 user and 1 site, with AWS hosting and community support; consider it if those terms suit your needs. Marvelous Designer offers a paid personal monthly subscription for individuals, freelancers, hobbyists, and sole proprietors. Tailornova is a web-based option with a Personal plan at 29.00 USD per month for personal use, including monthly download allowances.

Verdict

Choose Valentina if your priority is parametric 2D patternmaking and grading across desktop platforms, and you can accept its asymmetric file compatibility. Its commercial-use permission and low-cost paid tiers strengthen the case for users who need direct support or legacy-platform binaries. Look elsewhere if your work depends on DXF import, 3D garment simulation, or a fuller apparel-design workflow.
