Overview

Garmin Connect turns recorded workouts into detailed activity summaries: depending on the device and activity, these can include time, distance, laps, elevation, pace or speed, heart rate and GPS route maps. That depth is valuable to people who review training beyond the headline distance, but it is tied to Garmin device data rather than being a standalone tracker.

Health views can include steps, heart rate, stress and sleep, with the information available depending on device capabilities. Users can create courses and custom workouts, and download courses to compatible devices. Garmin says most app and website features will be limited or unavailable unless personal data is uploaded to Garmin, an important condition for anyone reluctant to sync data.

Key features

Training and activity planning

Training plans cover runners, cyclists, strength trainers, triathletes and fitness enthusiasts. Adaptive workout programming and analytics for progress tracking make Connect relevant to people who want more structure than a logbook. It does not offer coach tools, however, so it is not a substitute for a coach-facing platform when managing clients is the priority.

Connect+ and integrations

Connect+ adds AI-powered Active Intelligence insights, a performance dashboard, live activity, training guidance, expanded LiveTrack features and exclusive badge challenges. These extras may help Garmin users who want more analysis or guidance, but the feature set varies by device, so the subscription is not a uniform upgrade for every owner.

Connections to MyFitnessPal, Strava and TrainingPeaks can supplement Garmin data. The trade-off is that third-party services may interpret activity data differently, so displayed values can diverge. Activity data is private by default, and privacy settings let users control who can see it. Garmin says it does not sell personal data and shares activity data with third parties only when the user directs it.

Pricing

The free Garmin Connect plan is free and keeps existing features and data free. It is the sensible starting point for Garmin owners who want activity and health records, plans and workouts without a subscription.

Garmin Connect+ costs 6.99 USD per month, billed monthly, or 69.99 USD per year, billed annually. Both paid plans include premium features and personalized insights, with features varying by device. The annual plan lowers the effective monthly cost for someone committed to a full year; the monthly option costs more over twelve months but avoids an annual billing commitment. A 30-day trial is offered. There are no stated seat or quota caps to weigh against these plans.

Platforms

Garmin Connect is available as an Android and iOS app and through the web. Garmin directs app users to app stores for downloads. Wearable sync is supported, but the data and Connect+ features available depend on the compatible device.

Who it's for

Connect is a strong fit for Garmin owners who want activity detail, health information and training tools alongside their device data, especially if the free plan is enough. Connect+ is worth considering for those who will use its additional insights, dashboard, LiveTrack features or training guidance. It is less suitable for someone who wants to avoid uploading personal data to Garmin, or for a trainer seeking dedicated coach tools.

Pros and cons

Pros: Detailed activity records can include route maps, elevation and heart rate, giving athletes more context than a basic workout entry.
Pros: Plans, custom workouts and courses support several types of training, with course downloads for compatible devices.
Pros: Core features and existing data remain free, while Connect+ is optional.
Cons: Data availability and paid features vary by device, so Garmin owners may not receive the same experience.
Cons: Most app and website features depend on uploading personal data to Garmin.
Cons: Connected third-party services can show different values because they may interpret activity data differently.

Alternatives

Choose TrainingPeaks instead if you want a freemium training platform that also supports macOS and Windows; its Basic athlete account is free, while some features require Premium.

Choose Hevy if workout routines and exercise logging are the priority: its free plan is capped at four routines, seven custom exercises and three months of graph history, with limited measurement tracking.

ABC Trainerize is another alternative for readers comparing fitness platforms.

Choose MyFitnessPal if food and exercise logging, recipes, measurements and partner app connections matter more than Garmin device-centered activity analysis.

Verdict

Garmin Connect is the right choice for Garmin owners who want detailed activity and health records plus practical training tools without paying for core access. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of device-linked analysis, courses, workouts and a free plan. Look elsewhere if Garmin data uploads are unacceptable, you need coach tools, or you want an experience that does not depend on which Garmin device you own.
