Overview

SkyEmu supports Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, and loads ROMs from ZIP archives without requiring BIOS files. That makes it a practical starting point for players with games across several of these systems, rather than a focused choice for just one. Emulation quality varies: the project says GBA emulation is significantly more accurate than GB and GBC, while Nintendo DS emulation is beta quality and many games still have mild graphics and audio issues.

The project’s preservation goal is paired with useful day-to-day options, including four persistent save-state slots with screenshot previews. Those slots make it easier to keep separate stopping points and identify them later.

Key features

Visual options include upscaling shaders, color correction and screen ghosting, giving players ways to adjust the image rather than accept a single presentation. Controller support, rumble, configurable keybinds and mobile on-screen controls accommodate different devices and play styles.

A REST-like API supports asynchronous scripting and automation, which gives technically inclined users a way to build workflows around the emulator. Release notes also list Retro Achievements, a RetroArch/libretro core and Google Drive save-state sync.

The web app runs locally using WebAssembly and JavaScript, so files stay on the user's machine. A service worker enables offline use on more platforms, making the web build more than an online-only option.

Pricing

SkyEmu is free, with stable builds available at no cost. There is no paid tier or trial to weigh against its capabilities. The meaningful caveat is quality rather than cost: DS emulation is beta, so players whose main library is on that system should account for the known issues before choosing it.

Platforms

SkyEmu runs on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows and the web. Android support and mobile on-screen controls make it viable on phones, while controller support and configurable keybinds suit desktop play. The locally running web build and offline support add flexibility for users who prefer a browser-based setup.

Who it's for

SkyEmu suits players who want one free tool for several Nintendo handheld libraries and value save states, adjustable visuals and flexible input. Its local web operation may also appeal to users who want ROM files to remain on their machine. It is a less certain choice for DS-focused players who need consistently clean graphics and audio, or for players prioritizing GB/GBC accuracy over broader system coverage.

Pros and cons

Pros: Four systems, six platform options and ZIP ROM loading without BIOS requirements make it broadly usable.
Pros: Four persistent save-state slots with screenshot previews help preserve and distinguish play sessions.
Pros: Local web execution and a service worker provide file privacy and offline use on more platforms.
Cons: DS emulation remains beta quality, with mild graphics and audio issues in many games.
Cons: GBA emulation is significantly more accurate than GB/GBC, so it is not equally compelling across all supported systems.

Verdict

Choose SkyEmu if you want a free, open-source emulator spanning four Nintendo handhelds, with platform flexibility, persistent save states and useful control options. Look elsewhere if DS is your priority and its beta quality and remaining graphics and audio issues are deal-breakers, or if you need stronger GB/GBC accuracy than the project claims.
