Overview

The application runs its browser interface entirely on your computer, without a remote server. You open a directory, optionally include its subdirectories, and browse thumbnails in 25-image pages. Searches operate on metadata values and can find and catalog tags already present across a collection, making it more useful for organizing a library than a viewer that only displays one file at a time.

Its local design is a meaningful privacy advantage for photographers and organizations that cannot send images to a hosted service. The local database and thumbnails remain on your machine: thumbnails are placed in a .thumbnails folder inside opened photo directories, while edits are written directly to the image files. That direct-write workflow is convenient, but it also raises the cost of an error when the software is still alpha.

Key features

Metadata editing

IPTC controls cover practical publishing fields such as Keywords, Caption, Copyright, Creator, City, and Country. EXIF access extends to camera and lens information, exposure settings, and GPS coordinates. Tag autocomplete is populated from metadata discovered in the collection, so recurring vocabulary is faster to enter than in a blank text field. One-click tag deletion and immediate saving make small corrections quick, while prompts for unsaved changes provide a safeguard when you leave other edits pending.

Browsing, search, and location

Real-time searches by tag value are useful when a large folder tree is easier to maintain than a separate catalog. A metadata hover overlay can show dates, locations, and keywords, and converts GPS coordinates to place names with offline reverse geocoding. That keeps location lookups available without an internet connection, although it does not remove the need to handle embedded location data carefully when sharing files.

Formats and engine

JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and HEIC/HEIF are supported. HEIC/HEIF requires the pillow-heif package, an extra dependency to account for before choosing it for a mixed library. Exiv2, accessed through custom C++ bindings, performs metadata handling; the listed stack also includes FastAPI, SQLite, Pillow, and pywebview.

Pricing

Simple Photo Meta — free. This is a GPLv3-licensed open-source desktop application with no paid tier, seat charge, quota, or subscription term. The free plan is therefore suitable for individuals, archives, and technical teams that can run software locally and accept alpha-level risk. Its price does not compensate for the safety warning: the maker explicitly cautions that valuable images may be destroyed during testing.

Platforms

The project targets Linux and macOS, specifically software written for macOS Apple Silicon and Linux. The README describes Apple Silicon DMG and Linux Flatpak downloads, while the GitHub releases page showed no releases when opened, so distribution may require following the project’s current repository instructions. Windows is untested and should not be treated as a supported deployment.

Who it's for

Choose it if you need private, offline metadata work on Linux or an Apple Silicon Mac, especially when recursive folder browsing, tag discovery, and GPS-to-place-name conversion matter. It can also suit contributors comfortable with GPL software who want to report bugs or submit pull requests. Do not make it the primary editor for irreplaceable originals, production archives, or Windows fleets until its alpha status and file-safety risk are acceptable; work on verified copies instead.

Pros and cons

Pros: Local-only operation avoids uploading images; EXIF and IPTC editing covers common catalog and publishing fields; recursive scans and 25-image pagination help with folder-based libraries; real-time metadata search and tag autocomplete speed finding and labeling; offline reverse geocoding adds place names without a network connection; GPLv3 licensing permits open-source use and contribution.
Cons: Alpha software may destroy valuable images, making backups and duplicate working files essential; Windows is untested; HEIC/HEIF needs the additional pillow-heif dependency; direct writes to image files leave less room for recovery than a non-destructive workflow; the absence of a release on the opened GitHub releases page can make installation less predictable.

Alternatives

For a broader shortlist, see Photo Metadata Editors.

ExifCleaner is the stronger pick when you need a free desktop app on Windows as well as Linux and macOS.
Photo Metadata Editor fits Windows users who want an MSI installer or portable ZIP.
Exif Pilot is a Windows freemium option with a free Basic EXIF editor and a paid batch-editing plan.
ExifTool is preferable when an API, command-line, self-hosted, or cross-platform workflow matters.
Metadata Stripper suits users seeking a free, open-source native app focused on JPEG, PNG, and WebP.
Exif Lens is the mobile choice for iOS library browsing and filtering, with editing in its paid tier.
GeoSetter is a Windows-only alternative with no usage restrictions.
MetaFix: EXIF Editor is an Android option offering basic single-photo editing with ads and a daily limit on its free plan.

Verdict

Simple Photo Meta is a compelling no-cost choice for Linux and Apple Silicon Mac users who want local EXIF/IPTC search and editing, tag-aware browsing, and offline location lookup in one tool. Its decisive reason to look elsewhere is the maker’s own alpha warning that image files may be destroyed: use it on backups and test collections, not as the trusted editor for valuable originals.
