Overview

RustBoyAdvance-NG is a Rust-written Game Boy Advance emulator and debugger, with desktop, browser and experimental Android routes. It suits technically inclined players and developers who value access to debugging tools; its breadth is attractive, but unfinished audio and fixed desktop controls are meaningful trade-offs.

Key features

The WebAssembly demo accepts ROM files by drag and drop, making it a convenient way to try the emulator in a browser. On desktop, ROMs and ZIP files containing .gba files can likewise be dropped into the window. Snapshot commands let users save with F5 and load with F9, useful for returning to a game state, but the fixed key bindings may frustrate anyone whose preferred controls conflict.

A custom debugger can be enabled with the debugger build feature, and an experimental GDB server is available behind a separate build feature. That makes RustBoyAdvance-NG more compelling for emulator exploration and debugging than for players who want only a finished, straightforward launcher. The project also offers Java JNI bindings and a terminal frontend using crossterm and viuer.

Emulation work remains incomplete: CGB audio, including its four wave-generator channels, is still on the todo list. Players who care about complete audio behavior should weigh that gap carefully.

Pricing

Free — 0.00 USD per free. The MIT-licensed emulator and debugger cost nothing. There is no paid tier to weigh against the free option, so the choice is about whether its current feature and platform limits fit. The MIT License permits use, copying, modification, distribution, sublicensing and sale, subject to its conditions.

Platforms

RustBoyAdvance-NG covers Linux, Windows and macOS desktop builds, plus a WebAssembly demo. Desktop builds require Rust 1.51 or later and SDL2 dependencies on Linux and macOS. The repository also includes a proof-of-concept Android app that can be opened in Android Studio; building it requires Rust Android targets and the NDK. The minifb desktop frontend is not maintained, so it is a weaker choice for anyone seeking a maintained frontend without build work.

Who it's for

Choose RustBoyAdvance-NG if you want a free, open-source GBA emulator with debugger options, or if a browser demo is preferable to installing a desktop build. It is less suitable for players who need configurable controls, finished CGB audio, or a polished Android app: the controls cannot be changed, the audio work is unfinished, and Android support is proof-of-concept.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free under the MIT License, with desktop and browser options and debugger features for users who want to inspect emulation.
Pros: ROM and ZIP drag-and-drop loading and snapshot save/load shortcuts provide practical ways to start and resume games.
Cons: Desktop key bindings are not configurable, limiting control flexibility.
Cons: CGB audio remains unfinished, and the Android application is only proof-of-concept.
Cons: Desktop setup has build dependencies, while the minifb frontend is not maintained.

Alternatives

For a broader platform range, including iOS, consider RetroArch, a free, open-source project available across mobile, desktop and web. SkyEmu is another free, open-source option across those platforms; its DS emulation is beta quality. For a desktop-focused GBA emulator, mGBA is free and open source for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Apple users can compare Provenance, which is free when sideloaded or built from source and also has a freemium model. VisualBoyAdvance-M is a free, open-source option with builds for Android and desktop systems. For iOS, Delta is a free app with in-app purchases. Browser users who want a self-hosted option can consider gbajs3, which is freely licensed and runs in a modern browser. Hemulator is a free, open-source community project for desktop systems; users provide their own legally obtained ROM files.

Verdict

RustBoyAdvance-NG is a strong fit for technically curious GBA players and developers who want free access to desktop or browser emulation plus debugger options. Its principal draw is that combination of play and inspection; look elsewhere if configurable controls, complete CGB audio or a finished Android experience matters more.
