Overview

GitBook is a collaborative platform for authoring, reviewing, and publishing branded documentation, with AI tools for maintaining content and answering questions. It is best suited to teams that want documentation work tied to a branch-and-review workflow, while still supporting public or restricted sites. Its main trade-off is cost that scales by site and, on paid plans, by user.

Key features

Authors can write in a block-based visual editor or Markdown, and GitHub or GitLab synchronization supports teams that want documentation changes managed with source control. Git Sync adds branching, review, and merging, making it a strong fit for teams that already treat documentation as part of product work. Readers who need a simple standalone wiki may find that workflow and its associated pricing more than they need.

Published sites support custom domains, responsive layouts, built-in SEO, preview deployments, and site variants. Traffic to published documentation is not capped, so readership growth does not trigger a stated page-view limit. Analytics and redirects are included with Premium, which makes that tier more useful for teams managing a public documentation presence than the free plan.

Tiered roles and permissions separate viewing from editing, while authenticated access can limit documentation to selected customers, team members, or other authorized users. It supports Okta, Azure, Auth0, AWS Cognito, OIDC, and custom authentication backends. GitBook states that customer data is encrypted at rest and in transit, stored in U.S. data centers, and protected under SOC 2 and ISO 27001 compliance; its Trust Center names SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022. These controls may suit organizations with access and security requirements, though teams should assess them against their own policies.

GitBook Agent can find content gaps, draft updates, and review changes; Assistant answers questions using documentation and connected sources. GitBook offers setup options for Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor, and publishes documentation access through llms.txt, llms-full.txt, Markdown, and an MCP connection for compatible tools. The Free plan's 10 Agent messages per week is a small allowance for frequent upkeep. Ultimate includes 500 successful Assistant answers, a meaningful inclusion for teams using answers at scale, but still a quota to account for.

Built-in integrations span GitHub, GitLab, Slack, Intercom, analytics, authentication, feature-flag, and support tools. The REST API supports standard GET, POST, PATCH, and DELETE methods for content, collaboration, and integrations.

Pricing

GitBook is freemium, with a 14-day free trial. Annual billing includes two months free. Paid plan prices are per site, and Premium and Ultimate add $12 per user/month, so a multi-site team should calculate both dimensions rather than compare only the starting price.

Free: 0.00 USD per free, billed per site/month. It is aimed at individuals and includes one user, unlimited page views, and 10 Agent messages per week. It is a useful way to publish and evaluate the workflow, but the single-seat cap makes it unsuitable as a shared team workspace.
Premium: 65.00 USD per month, billed per site/month when billed annually, plus $12 per user/month. For public, branded documentation sites, it adds unlimited page views, a custom domain, AI search, analytics, and site redirects. It is the practical step up for teams focused on a polished public site, but it does not include the Assistant or authenticated access.
Ultimate: 249.00 USD per month, billed per site/month when billed annually, plus $12 per user/month. For centralized documentation with AI, it includes unlimited page views, Assistant, authenticated access, and 500 successful Assistant answers. Choose it when controlled access and answer-based support justify the substantial per-site increase over Premium.
Enterprise: custom pricing for global teams scaling documentation. It includes Ultimate features, SAML SSO, custom integrations, dedicated support, and custom contracts and invoicing. This is the relevant tier for teams needing centralized identity controls and a tailored commercial or implementation arrangement.

Platforms

GitBook supports web and API access. The API enables programmatic work with content, collaboration, and integrations; the web platform is the authoring and publishing option. No desktop platform is part of its stated platform support.

Who it's for

GitBook suits software teams that want branded documentation, code-like review, and the option to publish either openly or behind authentication. It is also a credible choice for larger organizations that need SAML SSO, custom integrations, or dedicated rollout support. Solo authors can start free, but the one-user ceiling means a team will need a paid plan, and costs can rise with each site and user.

Pros and cons

Pro: Branching, review, and merging work well for teams that want documentation changes to follow a pull-request-style process.
Pro: Unlimited published traffic avoids a page-view ceiling as a documentation audience grows.
Pro: Public and authenticated publishing, with multiple identity-provider options, gives teams flexibility over who can read docs.
Con: Free is limited to one user and 10 weekly Agent messages, so collaboration and regular AI-assisted maintenance require a paid plan.
Con: Paid plans charge per site and add $12 per user/month, which can make multiple documentation sites or larger teams costly.
Con: Ultimate's 500 included successful Assistant answers are a quota, so teams with heavier use should consider whether that allowance fits.

Alternatives

For a public documentation project, Mintlify is worth considering if five editor seats, a custom domain, authentication, an MCP server, and an API playground on its free Starter plan are a better match. Stainless is a more focused option when the need is API generation: its free plan allows up to five generators and seats, with up to 25 endpoints and 100 preview builds per month. Fern may suit teams seeking a free, broader platform with 10 team members, one site, and monthly AI and page-generation allowances.

Sphinx is a free, BSD 2-Clause open-source option to install locally or self-host. VitePress is a free MIT-licensed static site generator for teams able to use Node.js 22 or higher. Writerside offers a free JetBrains IDE plugin with the standalone version's functionality. 0docs is a free, MIT-licensed self-hosted documentation platform. DocPlatform is another free Community Edition option.

Verdict

Choose GitBook if your team wants a branded documentation site built around collaborative, reviewable editing, with the option to add authenticated access and AI answers. The uncapped published traffic and broad access controls are strong foundations for growing documentation. Look elsewhere if you need several collaborators at no cost or want predictable team pricing without per-site and per-user charges.
