Overview

Global Site Management (GSM) is on-premises software for monitoring and managing data center infrastructure, capacity, and operational risk. It is best suited to teams that need one view of facility conditions and IT assets, rather than a lightweight inventory tool. Its broad operational remit and unlimited simultaneous users are compelling, but the Windows, SQL Server, and Visio requirements and per-rack pricing make it a considered purchase.

Key features

Power, environment, and planning

GSM combines hardware discovery with real-time power and environmental data collection. Energy analysis, outlet control, and power gear configuration help operators oversee electrical infrastructure; capacity modeling supports planning, while failure detection, alerts, and device-impact assessment help teams judge operational risk. Custom-group measurements and alerts are useful when operators need to focus on selected equipment rather than a whole site.

Assets and operational workflows

Inventory, reservations, movement audits, document and warranty management, CSV import, and work orders cover much of the record-keeping around physical equipment. GSM commonly communicates through SNMP, JSON, BACnet, and Modbus, and can accommodate other protocols across devices such as PDUs, sensors, servers, switches, and storage. GSMintegrate can connect trouble-ticket systems such as Remedy with asset work orders and automatic email notifications. Visio integration supports floor-plan and device management.

Dashboards provide power and asset monitoring through cloud and desktop interfaces, with mobile access in some suites. That qualification matters for teams expecting mobile coverage across every edition. GSM also requires a 64-bit Windows operating system, 8 GB of available RAM, Microsoft SQL Server, and Microsoft Visio Professional, so its infrastructure footprint should be checked before selection.

Pricing

GSM uses a freemium model, with product pricing based on racks rather than users. Unlimited simultaneous users can make it easier to give operations teams broad access without per-seat licensing, but the rack-based model means costs need to be assessed against the facility footprint.

GSMpowerlite: Free. This entry-level version is intended for smaller data centers and pilot programs, making it the natural starting point for evaluation. It is not a substitute for confirming which suite capabilities fit a larger operational deployment.
GSMessential: custom pricing, available by call or direct email. It suits buyers who need a paid product suite, but the per-rack basis means the cost depends on the deployment.
GSMprofessional: custom pricing, available by call or direct email. As with Essential, buyers should compare the suite features with their requirements and budget for racks rather than users.
GSMenterprise: custom pricing, available by call or direct email. It is the named enterprise tier, though buyers should establish the exact suite scope and per-rack cost before committing.

Norlinx offers free trials that generally last 30 days. Custom integrations or extensive travel may incur costs, so those services should be considered separately from the trial. The paid suites do not have public prices.

Platforms

GSM is deployed on-premises and is available for Windows, web, Android, and iOS. The published system requirements call for 64-bit Windows, 8 GB of RAM, SQL Server, and Visio Professional; mobile interfaces apply to some suites. Norlinx also offers custom integrations, on-site implementation, training, and support, with dedicated account management and 24×7 technical support for some suites.

Who it's for

GSM is a strong fit for data center operators managing power, cooling, space, capacity, and equipment records across a facility, especially where a team wants broad user access without seat charges. Its planning, failure-impact, and asset-workflow capabilities are relevant to organizations coordinating facility and IT operations. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a simple, self-hosted tool with minimal system prerequisites or a predictable public price.

Pros and cons

Pros: Combines real-time power and environmental monitoring with capacity planning and asset management, giving operations teams a wide view of infrastructure.
Pros: Unlimited simultaneous users and no per-user charge support broad team access.
Pros: Protocol support, trouble-ticket integration, and Visio integration connect equipment data with operational workflows and floor plans.
Cons: The Windows, SQL Server, and Visio Professional requirements add prerequisites that may not suit every environment.
Cons: Paid suites use per-rack pricing with custom quotes, making cost comparison less immediate.
Cons: Mobile dashboards are available only for some suites, so teams should not assume feature parity across editions.

Alternatives

Danbyte is a better fit for buyers who want a free and open-source, self-hosted option with all features included, no seat license, and no license expiry. Hyperview may suit teams wanting a 30-day trial with all features and no credit card, followed by per-asset pricing. openDCIM is a free, web-based GPL v3 option for buyers seeking a self-hosted Linux tool. Cormant-CS is worth considering when a 25–30-rack subscription with 500 assets and consultant support fits the deployment. ColdAisle is a free, MIT-licensed, self-hosted option for teams that do not need a trial. Sunbird dcTrack offers a paid annual subscription at 19.50 USD per month, billed annually, with unlimited users, sites, and assets. NetZoom DCIM is an alternative for buyers considering an annual renewable subscription licensed by user. Brightlayer DCIM is an option for teams seeking a product purchased through an Eaton reseller.

Verdict

Choose GSM if your data center team needs integrated infrastructure monitoring, capacity planning, asset records, and operational workflows, with unlimited users and an entry-level free option. Its breadth is the main reason to shortlist it; the Windows, SQL Server, and Visio prerequisites and custom per-rack prices are the reasons to look elsewhere if you need a lighter deployment or a clear upfront cost.
