Overview

GMClean combines inbox analysis with bulk unsubscribe, deletion, and export workflows. Its support for up to 10 simultaneous mailboxes makes it more suitable for administrators or households managing several accounts than for a single-inbox, set-and-forget service. Running it with npm, Docker, or Docker Compose offers deployment choice, while the MIT licence permits modification and contribution through GitHub.

Key features

The scanner works from headers such as sender, subject, and List-Unsubscribe rather than downloading message bodies. That reduces the email content GMClean handles while retaining enough metadata for sender insights, email-age distribution, and a 0–100 inbox health score calculated from five weighted factors. Classification uses heuristic rules, with optional Gemini processing for ambiguous cases; users who prefer a non-AI default can leave that option unused.

Scanning covers INBOX, Spam, Promotions, Trash, and other IMAP folders, so cleanup is not limited to the primary inbox view. GMClean can connect Gmail, Outlook, or custom IMAP mailboxes, using app passwords or OAuth2 for Google and Microsoft accounts. Up to 10 mailboxes can be connected at once, a meaningful capacity for small operational setups.

One-click RFC 8058 unsubscribe, including List-Unsubscribe-Post support, and bulk unsubscribe target mailing-list clutter directly. Deletion is more controlled: bulk email actions run in batches of 500 messages, so a large purge proceeds in repeated batches rather than one unlimited operation. You can export selected subscriptions with resubscribe links or export all scanned emails as CSV, useful when keeping an external record or reversing subscription decisions.

App data is stored in browser IndexedDB, and GMClean says it has no cloud database, telemetry, tracking cookies, or analytics scripts. Credentials are encrypted with AES-256-CBC before storage, with an ENCRYPTION_SECRET required as the AES-256 key. Those protections benefit privacy-conscious operators, but the security of the deployment and secret handling still depends on the person running it.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Open source	Free	MIT-licensed, self-hosted GMClean with its mailbox, scanning, unsubscribe, deletion, classification, and export features.

There is no paid hosted tier in this plan structure. The free open-source model is a strong fit for readers able to provide their own hosting and operational oversight; readers who want vendor-managed infrastructure, support, or a simpler consumer setup should consider a hosted alternative instead.

Platforms

GMClean is delivered as a self-hosted web application. The project documents npm, Docker, and Docker Compose deployment, and connects Gmail, Outlook, and custom IMAP servers through app passwords or Google and Microsoft OAuth2.

Who it's for

Choose GMClean if you manage several compatible mailboxes, want header-based processing, and are comfortable deploying software and protecting an encryption secret. It is particularly relevant to privacy-minded operators who prefer browser-local data and no stated telemetry. It is a weaker fit for people who want a ready-made mobile app, a managed cloud account, or a support-led onboarding process.

Pros and cons

Pros

Header-only processing: subjects, senders, and unsubscribe headers support analysis without downloading message bodies.
Multi-mailbox coverage: up to 10 Gmail, Outlook, or custom IMAP accounts can be handled simultaneously.
Actionable cleanup: RFC 8058 one-click and bulk unsubscribe sit alongside deletion and CSV export.
Local data posture: browser IndexedDB storage, no cloud database, and no stated telemetry keep the architecture locally focused.
Open-source deployment: MIT licensing and npm, Docker, and Docker Compose options allow inspection and adaptation.

Cons

Self-hosting overhead: you must deploy the application and correctly configure ENCRYPTION_SECRET and account authentication.
Deletion batching: bulk removal is limited to 500 messages per action, adding rounds to large cleanups.
Heuristic classification: categorisation is rule-based by default, with Gemini only an optional aid for ambiguous cases.
No managed plan: readers seeking hosted maintenance or a paid support tier will need another product.

Alternatives

Email Cleanup Software is the broader list to consult when comparing cleanup tools by platform and pricing.

Clean Email is the better choice for a hosted, multi-platform service with Android, iOS, macOS, and web clients, plus a free account that cleans up to 1,000 messages and paid features beyond that cap.

Cleanfox suits readers who want a free Android, iOS, or web tool focused on inbox cleaning and newsletter unsubscribe without self-hosting.

GoodByEmail is worth considering when unlimited inboxes, unsubscribes, inbox size, and email history on one device justify its paid Lite plan.

Unroll.Me is a free mobile-and-web option, but it requires access to commercial emails and uses commercial-email data for measurement products.

Gmail Unsubscriber is another open-source, MIT-licensed option for readers specifically seeking a Gmail-focused project.

Leave Me Alone fits users wanting a consumer-facing Android or web service with unsubscribe and screening tools.

Trimbox is a simpler freemium route across Android, iOS, web, and extension platforms, with the first 10 unsubscribes free.

ClearInbox is a self-hosted web alternative whose free account connects one mailbox.

Verdict

GMClean is a strong choice for technically capable users who need multi-mailbox cleanup while keeping scanning and app data close to their own infrastructure. Its main reason to choose it is the combination of header-only analysis, local browser storage, and open-source control. Look elsewhere if you want managed hosting, mobile apps, or a workflow that does not require you to operate the deployment and safeguard its encryption secret.
