Overview

Metaplay combines a server-authoritative C# game server with a Unity client library and shared client-server logic. Player accounts, cloud data, multiplayer and matchmaking sit alongside tools for operating a live game, giving studios a unified foundation rather than a collection of separate services. The approach is especially relevant when a team wants control over game logic and backend deployment; it asks for C# and Unity expertise, rather than serving as a general-purpose backend for any engine.

Hosting can be managed through Metaplay Cloud or run on customer AWS infrastructure, another Kubernetes cluster or on-premises. That flexibility has a consequential caveat: managed Cloud supports single-region deployments, while multi-region deployments require self-hosting. Studios that need multiple regions should weigh the infrastructure control against the operational work of running their own deployment.

Key features

LiveOps and player systems

The LiveOps dashboard covers player segmentation, A/B testing, over-the-air configuration updates, events, economy management and player support tools. This breadth can help a team tune and operate a live game without splitting these jobs across multiple products. The SDK also includes guilds and social features, leaderboards, leagues, and asynchronous and synchronous matchmaking. Synchronous matchmaking is in active development, so teams should not treat it as a settled capability for a current launch requirement.

Integrations and AI tooling

Metaplay supports analytics export to BigQuery and S3, purchase validation for Google Play, App Store and Steam, and sign-in through Google, Apple, Facebook, Steam or custom web login. Docs and Portal MCP servers connect the product to AI tools; they are read-only by default and respect existing permissions. These integrations cover common game operations, though the listed sign-in choices and analytics destinations define the integration picture described here.

Security and compliance

The maker describes TLS-encrypted client-server communication, database encryption at rest through the cloud provider, role-based access controls and audit logs. GDPR data export and deletion tools are provided, and Metaplay works with enterprise customers on SOC 2 and other certifications. This offers useful controls for teams handling player data, while SOC 2 should not be mistaken for an already completed certification.

Pricing

Metaplay has a free local-development plan and paid hosting plans from €195/month. The free plan includes the full SDK and a local server, with no hard limits on local development; it is for building and running locally, not a substitute for the hosted player capacity of a paid tier. Community support is also free and provides Discord access.

Starter — €195/month: 5 DAU and one mini environment. It is aimed at solo developers or teams of two, but that small daily-active-user allowance makes it a narrow choice for a hosted early release.
Pre-launch — €995/month: 100 DAU and two small environments. It suits small teams preparing a launch, though 100 DAU remains a modest ceiling for a game gaining traction.
Production — €1985/month+€2.95 per 1000 monthly DAU above 5000 DAU/day: the plan includes the first 5000 DAU/day, two small environments, plus staging and scalable production environments; DAU is unlimited subject to a Fair Use Policy. It is the clearest fit for a live title, with usage-based charges above the included daily activity level.
Private Cloud — custom pricing: unlimited DAU and environments sized to need, intended for huge scale (>1m DAU). It suits very large operations that need a private cloud arrangement, but has no fixed price.

Support is priced separately. Standard support is €1500/month for weekday 09–17h coverage, next-business-day response, onboarding, portal tickets and 1:1 email support. Dedicated support is €5000/month for weekday 09–17h coverage, same-business-day response, two engineer days per month, a private Slack channel and onboarding. Critical Incident Response is an add-on to paid support at + €5000/month, with 24/7 availability and a one-hour response SLA. These tiers make response commitments and engineering access explicit, but substantially increase the bill beyond hosting.

Platforms

The SDK supports Unity 2020.3 LTS and later, with games for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and WebGL. Metaplay is also available through API and web, and its deployment options include self-hosted infrastructure. Teams using other game engines should not assume the Unity-specific client support will fit their project.

Who it's for

Metaplay is aimed at ambitious studios building server-authoritative games, from prototype through global launch, including teams operating multiple titles. The free local plan is useful for prototyping, while the broad player and LiveOps systems suit teams preparing to run persistent games. It is less compelling for a small game that needs only analytics or one isolated operations tool, and multi-region teams must be prepared to self-host.

Pros and cons

Pro: A single Unity-oriented backend combines accounts, cloud data, multiplayer, matchmaking and LiveOps, reducing the need to assemble these core game systems separately.
Pro: Managed, AWS, Kubernetes and on-premises deployment paths give studios meaningful infrastructure choice, including a self-hosted route to multi-region deployment.
Pro: The free local plan includes the full SDK and local server without hard limits on local development, making it useful before a team is ready to pay for hosting.
Con: Starter allows only 5 DAU and Pre-launch 100 DAU, so hosted testing or early growth can quickly require a more expensive plan.
Con: Managed Cloud is single-region only; multi-region operation means taking on self-hosted infrastructure.
Con: Synchronous matchmaking remains in active development, limiting its suitability where that capability is a firm launch requirement.

Alternatives

Choose BACKND instead if its free plan's allowance of up to 50 CCU, 1 GB/month traffic, core chat features and translation better matches a smaller game's needs. Consider brainCloud if its free development offering and best-effort weekday support better fit a team seeking a different backend option.

GameAnalytics is a more focused alternative when the priority is analytics: its free plan has no MAU limits and includes dashboards, events, funnels, cohorts, retention and real-time reporting. Balancy is worth considering when a studio chiefly needs CMS and asset storage; its free CMS plan includes cloud storage and payment validation, with a 10 MB asset-size cap and 1 GB total storage.

Joystick offers a free-to-start cloud plan with pay-for-what-you-use pricing and no per-seat fees, making it an option for teams prioritizing that pricing model. Crux has a free Dev plan with 10,000 MAU/month, 2M API calls and three active servers, which may suit a project that fits those stated limits.

Unity Version Control is a separate alternative for teams comparing version-control tools rather than a game backend. Tenjin is another alternative in the directory.

Verdict

Metaplay is a strong choice for Unity studios that want server-authoritative game services, LiveOps and flexible deployment in one platform, particularly when they expect to operate persistent games at scale. Its full local SDK makes prototyping accessible, but hosted entry tiers are constrained and meaningful support costs extra. Look elsewhere if multi-region managed hosting is essential, synchronous matchmaking must be ready now, or the game's needs are limited to a narrower tool.
