Overview

Google Photos is a cloud library for backing up, organizing, editing, searching and sharing photos and videos. It suits people who want one library across phones and computers, especially those already using Google services. Its strongest case is the combination of backup and everyday sharing; the trade-off is that its free storage is shared with Gmail and Drive.

Key features

Backup and library management

Backup can save new photos and videos automatically when enabled, or users can add items manually. Full-resolution RAW images and 4K video are supported, which makes the service useful for photographers and video libraries as well as casual phone collections. Original-quality backups count toward storage, however, and the allowance is not dedicated to Photos: Gmail and Drive use it too.

Editing and search

The app includes AI editing tools such as Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur, giving users ways to refine images within the same app that stores them. Search also helps navigate a growing library, but its example natural-language search feature is limited to eligible US users aged 18 or older, with an English (United States) account language, Face Groups enabled and location estimates turned on. That makes this particular search option a poor reason to choose Photos if those conditions do not fit.

Sharing, privacy and connections

Users can share photos, videos and albums with people who do not use Google Photos, including through apps such as WhatsApp and Snapchat. Face Groups can be switched off; Google says groups and labels are visible only to the account holder and are deleted from the account when the feature is turned off. Google also says Photos data is encrypted in transit with HTTPS and at rest, that it does not sell users' photos, videos or personal information or use photos and videos for advertising, and that users can delete or export content they add.

Google lists camera and digitization partners including Canon and Photomyne, print partners such as Walgreens and Shutterfly, and TV platforms including Google TV and Samsung. These connections broaden the ways a library can be digitized, printed and viewed.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 15 GB of shared storage. It is a practical starting point for smaller libraries, but the shared quota can also be consumed by Gmail and Drive, and Original-quality backups count against it.

Plan	Price	Storage and sharing	Best fit
Basic	1.99 USD per month, billed monthly	100 GB; up to 5 additional people	Users who need more room without moving to a larger tier
Google AI Plus	9.99 USD per month, billed monthly	2 TB; up to 5 additional people	Large libraries or households sharing capacity
Google AI Pro	19.99 USD per month, billed monthly	5 TB; up to 5 additional people	Those with substantial storage needs

Separate monthly Japan-priced plans are Google One Basic (100 GB) at 290.00 JPY per month, Google AI Plus (2 TB) at 1450.00 JPY per month, and Google AI Pro (5 TB) at 2900.00 JPY per month. Each shares storage across Google Photos, Drive and Gmail with up to 5 others. The paid tiers expand storage rather than removing the shared-storage trade-off.

Platforms

Google Photos works on Android and iOS, and can also be used on desktop and tablet devices. This makes it a reasonable option for people who move between mobile and larger screens rather than keeping a library on one device.

Who it's for

Choose Google Photos if you want automatic or manual cloud backup, editing and sharing in one place, and expect to use its cross-device access. It is also a sensible fit for users who can manage a shared Google storage quota or are willing to pay for a larger one. People with extensive Original-quality libraries who need storage separate from Gmail and Drive should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Automatic and manual backup support RAW images and 4K video, suiting mixed photo and video libraries.
Pros: Sharing works with contacts outside Photos and through familiar apps, reducing friction when recipients use different services.
Pros: Face Groups controls and the ability to delete or export added content give users meaningful privacy and data-management options.
Cons: The free 15 GB is shared with Gmail and Drive, so other Google files can reduce room for photos.
Cons: Original-quality files count against the quota, which makes large libraries more likely to require a paid tier.
Cons: The example natural-language search has multiple eligibility and settings requirements, limiting who can rely on it.

Alternatives

For a broader view of the category, see Photo Management Software, Photo Storage Services, Photo Scanning Software and Mobile Scanning Apps.

Pick FilmLab instead if you need an Android, iOS, Linux, macOS or Windows option focused on film-photography education; qualifying educators can request free licenses for its Education plan. FilmBox by Photomyne is a more focused alternative for limited film-negative scanning, saving and sharing, with a free Basic plan. Choose PaperScan if Windows TWAIN/WIA scanning and import are the priority: its free edition batches 10 pages, while the Home Edition offers unlimited batch scanning for 79.00 USD per once.

Brother iPrint&Scan is a free option for printing and scanning with a supported Brother machine, with features varying by model. MyHeritage Mobile App may suit users focused on family trees, with its free Basic plan supporting 250 people and 500 MB of storage. Nostalgia offers a free tier with 10 restores per month, 30 welcome restores, five caption/story actions per day, and one Family Vault for five members and 50 photos.

SlideScan by Photomyne is a free option for limited slide scanning, saving and sharing. Photo Scan by Photomyne is an alternative for users seeking unlimited scans and core enhancement features; its annual plan is 59.99 USD per year after a 3-day free trial and auto-renews until canceled.

Verdict

Google Photos is a strong choice for anyone who wants a cross-device photo and video library with backup, editing and flexible sharing in one service. Its central limitation is the shared storage pool: choose it if that arrangement works for your Google account, and look elsewhere if you need a separate, predictable allocation for a large Original-quality collection.
