Overview

The app connects itch.io browsing with downloading, installing, and running games and software. It brings purchases, collections, bundles, and installed titles into one library, which makes it a practical choice for regular itch.io users managing more than a few downloads. Automatic updates reduce manual upkeep, while offline mode extends to browser-based games synced into the app.

Key features

The built-in browser takes users from creator pages to installation within the client. Installed games update automatically; titles built with itch.io command-line tools can receive delta patches that contain only changed data. That can limit update downloads, but depends on the game using those tools.

Users can browse owned games, collections, bundles, and installed games. The client can also create Steam library shortcuts for installed titles, a useful bridge for players who prefer to launch games from Steam, though it remains centered on itch.io content. Registered itch:// and itchio:// links open pages or perform actions through the app.

Developers can provide an app manifest to define launch targets and integrate with the app API. That supports games with multiple launch options without requiring players to manage those choices outside the client. The project is open source, and the app is available in more than 20 languages.

Security measures include a sandbox that limits file reads and writes, gives Linux games isolated home directories, and runs Windows games as a less-privileged user. The app FAQ identifies Windows tool elevate as powering the Windows sandbox. Windows installers and the app are digitally signed with a certificate named itch corp.

Pricing

The itch app plan is free and includes downloads and runs for itch.io games and software on Windows, macOS, and Linux. There is no paid tier or free trial to weigh: the choice is whether the platform coverage and compatibility fit your library and device. Account support is available at support@itch.io; bugs and feature requests are handled through community feedback and GitHub.

Platforms

The app runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows; Windows requires Windows 7 or newer. Compatibility issues can still occur, particularly on Linux when games do not follow best practices. Linux users update through a package manager or by redownloading; options include Debian and RPM repositories, ArchLinux AUR, and a portable tar.xz archive.

Who it's for

Choose itch app if itch.io is a meaningful part of your game library and you want its browsing, installs, offline-synced browser games, and updates together. It is less compelling for someone seeking a launcher spanning multiple stores, or for Linux users who need predictable compatibility across games.

Pros and cons

Pros: Automatic updates and delta patches for supported games cut down on manual upkeep and repeated downloads.
Pros: Synced browser games can be played offline, and the library includes purchases, collections, and bundles.
Pros: The sandbox limits file access, with isolated home directories for Linux games and reduced privileges for Windows games.
Cons: Compatibility issues remain, especially on Linux, so not every game will behave reliably.
Cons: The client is focused on itch.io; Steam shortcuts help with launching but do not make it a cross-store library.
Cons: Linux updates require package-manager use or a redownload rather than relying on the Windows and macOS update path.

Alternatives

Choose Steam if you want a free launcher spanning Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows; game and content prices vary, and some subscriptions may be free. DMM Games is an option for readers seeking a freemium service across mobile, web, and Windows, with a GAME 遊び放題 plan at 980.00 JPY per month (billed 30日間). For a free client limited to macOS and Windows, consider GOG Galaxy; some platform-specific features require the relevant gaming client installed.

Other alternatives include GamersGate, Battle.net, Unreal Editor for Fortnite, Game Jolt, and IndieGala.

Verdict

itch app is a sound free choice for players who buy, collect, or download regularly from itch.io and want a single place to install and maintain that library. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of browsing, automatic updates, and offline access for synced browser games. Look elsewhere if you need a broad multi-store launcher or dependable compatibility across Linux games.
