Overview

Gopeed is a free download manager for people who move between devices or want downloads to fit into automated workflows. Its mix of torrent support, browser capture and remote control makes it more versatile than a basic download queue, though it suits users comfortable managing authentication and, on iOS, self-signing an app.

Key features

Gopeed handles HTTP and HTTPS alongside BitTorrent, magnet links and ed2k links. Torrent support covers seeding, DHT, PEX, uTP, WebTorrent and UPnP, with daily tracker-list updates. That breadth makes it a credible option for users handling both ordinary file downloads and torrent tasks; people who only need a simple queue may not need this range.

JavaScript extensions can add download sources such as YouTube, HuggingFace and cloud storage. Companion extensions for Chrome, Edge and Firefox automatically capture download links, saving manual copying when a browser encounters a file. The two extension paths serve different needs: one adds sources, while the other catches links already available in the browser.

For programmatic workflows, Gopeed offers an HTTP REST API and an official JavaScript SDK to create and manage tasks. Webhooks can report completion or failure to Gotify, Bark, WeCom, DingTalk and Telegram Bot. These options are useful for users who want downloads integrated into scripts or notifications, but they are more machinery than a casual downloader needs.

The Web version and Docker deployment can provide remote download services, so downloads need not be managed only from the machine running the client. Operators should treat access control as part of setup: Gopeed recommends an API token, and public Web deployments should enable identity authentication. The project is GPLv3-licensed, free, open source, and has no ads or tracking.

Pricing

Gopeed’s Free plan is free and includes all core download features, with no ads or hidden paywalls. It includes video downloading, remote control and a portable version. There is no paid tier to unlock core functionality, making it a straightforward choice for individuals and self-hosting users who can manage their own setup.

Platforms

Gopeed supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and Web, with API, browser-extension and self-hosted options also available. The iOS build is distributed as an IPA for self-signing because BitTorrent-related apps are not permitted on the App Store; that extra installation step makes iOS less convenient than the other listed platforms. On Windows, the installation guide warns that antivirus software may falsely flag host.exe and updater.exe and recommends downloading from official sources.

Who it's for

Gopeed is best for users who need downloads across platforms, want remote management, or plan to extend and automate download workflows. Its API, SDK and webhooks will matter most to developers and operators; browser capture and broad protocol support are more relevant to people managing varied downloads. Anyone seeking a basic downloader without remote-service setup or platform-specific installation steps may prefer a simpler option.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad protocol and torrent support handles more than standard HTTP downloads.
Pros: Browser capture, source extensions, an API, SDK and webhooks support both convenience and automation.
Pros: The free plan includes core features, remote control and video downloading, with no ads or hidden paywalls.
Cons: iOS requires self-signing an IPA rather than an App Store installation.
Cons: Remote Web deployments need deliberate authentication configuration, placing access-control responsibility on the operator.
Cons: Windows antivirus warnings about host.exe and updater.exe may complicate installation, even when the files come from official sources.

Alternatives

Download Manager Software is the broader directory for comparing download managers.

Choose 4K Video Downloader+ if you want a free basic tier with a separate Lite plan limited to one device and three simultaneous downloads; Gopeed instead offers its core features free without hidden paywalls.

JDownloader is another free option, and its features page describes it as complete open source under GPL.

AB Download Manager is a free, open-source, ad-free alternative.

BitComet is free for private personal, non-commercial use.

pyLoad is a free, open-source alternative with no stated price or usage limits.

Mipony is a freemium alternative with a free Basic plan.

YTD Video Downloader is worth considering if you want its free tier, which limits downloads to one per session, one simultaneous download and up to 95 KB/s, with ads.

Firelink offers free MIT-licensed browser companion and downloader options.

Verdict

Choose Gopeed if you want a free, cross-platform manager that can handle torrents, capture browser links and support remote or scripted workflows. Its broad capabilities and lack of ads or paid feature gates are the main reasons to pick it; look elsewhere if you need a conventional iOS installation or do not want to configure authentication for remote access.
