Overview

Wise combines international money transfers with rate alerts and tools for arranging repeat payments. It is a strong fit for people who send money across borders and want to see charges before paying; its variable fees make it less straightforward for anyone who needs one predictable price across currencies.

Founded in 2011 and based in London, Wise offers personal transfers on Android, iOS and the web. Recipients can receive money into bank accounts in more than 140 countries, and Wise says delivery on many popular routes takes a day or less.

Key features

Transfers and exchange rates

Wise says it uses the mid-market exchange rate and shows transfer fees upfront, with no hidden fees or exchange-rate markups. That transparency helps when comparing a transfer before committing, but the price still varies by currency: sending and conversion fees start from 0.33%. Sending to another Wise account has no sending fee, though conversion charges may still apply.

Transfers can be funded by Apple Pay, Google Pay, card or bank transfer. Tracking gives senders a way to follow a payment, while scheduled transfers and the option to repeat a previous transfer suit recurring bills or regular support for family. Rate alerts notify users about exchange-rate movements and the mid-market rate; they help monitor timing but do not remove the transfer fee.

Account safeguards and service

Two-factor authentication protects accounts and transactions, and Wise says it keeps customer money separate from its own accounts at established financial institutions. Photo ID may be required for some currencies or large transfers, so users should allow for verification when planning a payment. Wise says it is regulated by authorities worldwide and is licensed in most US states; for inward remittances to India, it works with a local bank partner under Reserve Bank of India authorisation.

Customer support is available by email, live chat and phone, 24/7 in English and 14 other languages. The service is aimed at individuals, while Wise Business separately offers a feature for managing team finances.

Pricing

Wise personal account and transfers: 0.00 USD per free. Registration is free, with no subscription or plan; users pay variable transfer and conversion fees by currency, starting from 0.33%. The plan also shows a 200 USD monthly ATM withdrawal allowance as free. This structure suits occasional and regular senders who prefer no account subscription, but it does not make transfers themselves free, and the total cost depends on the currency and payment.

There is no free trial because account registration is free. Wise also says transfers between Wise accounts have no sending fee, but conversion fees still apply where currencies change.

Platforms

Wise is available on Android, iOS and the web. Mobile users can access the app on either major mobile platform, while web access gives users another way to sign up and manage transfers.

Who it's for

Wise suits people who send money internationally to bank accounts, especially those who make repeat payments or want to track exchange rates before sending. Free registration and upfront fee display make it approachable for occasional users, while recurring-payment tools support regular transfers. It is less suited to people who need a fixed fee regardless of currency or want recipient methods other than bank accounts.

Pros and cons

Upfront fees and mid-market rates: users can review charges before payment, and Wise says it adds no exchange-rate markup.
Useful for repeat transfers: scheduling and repeating previous payments reduce friction for recurring bills or family support.
Broad bank reach: recipients can receive funds in bank accounts in over 140 countries, with many popular routes arriving within a day.
Variable charges: fees depend on currency, so senders need to check the cost of each route rather than assume one standard price.
Identity checks can apply: some currencies or large transfers may require photo ID, which can add a step before a payment is completed.

Alternatives

For a business focused on making payouts through an API or web platform, Payouts.com offers a free-to-start, usage-based model with no contract and guided migration. Plane Contractor Management may be a better fit when the need is contractor hiring and HRIS tools such as onboarding, a directory, custom reports, holidays and time tracking, rather than personal transfers.

Tremendous offers free platform access for gift cards, prepaid cards and donations at face value; some monetary payout methods may incur 4–6% fees. PayQuicker is another paid payout platform, with pricing available through an advisor.

MassPay is a paid payout platform with a free trial and coverage across 180 countries, though it requires KYB approval and fees vary by method and corridor. Arbonum uses pay-as-you-go pricing from 5.00 USD per once, quoted by corridor, and may suit payout operations without per-seat or setup charges. Thunes is a paid API and web payment service whose transaction fees vary by service, volume, corridor and risk.

Cashfree Payouts is a paid API and web option with transfer pricing that varies by payout method and amount, which may suit businesses comparing payout costs by channel.

Verdict

Choose Wise if you want international bank transfers with upfront fees, a mid-market exchange rate and practical tools for tracking or repeating payments. Its free account and broad recipient reach are compelling, but currency-dependent charges mean it is worth checking each transfer cost, and users who need a fixed-fee payout operation may be better served by a business-focused alternative.
