Overview

Substack brings publishing and audience tools together for writers, podcasters, video creators, and other independent publishers. It is a strong fit for creators building a publication around reader relationships; it is less compelling for those who want paid subscriptions without a revenue share.

Key features

One publishing flow accommodates written posts, newsletters, podcasts, video, live streams, and pages. Its editor adds scheduling, autosaved drafts, version history, templates, SEO metadata, and headline A/B testing. That range helps creators maintain a regular publication across formats, though it may be more machinery than a text-only writer needs.

Discovery tools include recommendations, Notes, leaderboards, referrals, and search. Audience segmentation and email automation help creators tailor communication, while free and paid posts, subscriptions, trials, gifts, and group plans provide several ways to structure reader support. Together, these features suit a publication that depends on growing and serving a subscriber audience better than a tool used only to send occasional updates.

Substack can automatically distribute podcast episodes to Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and video to YouTube and LinkedIn. Creators own their intellectual property and mailing list and can export their data, useful safeguards for publishers building an audience on a hosted platform. Subscriber support questions are handled on behalf of writers; creators can also use the Help Center's FAQs and walkthroughs.

Substack accepts vulnerability reports by email and commits to an initial confirmation within 72 hours. Its privacy policy says it endeavors to protect personal information but cannot guarantee complete security, so publishers handling sensitive audience data should weigh that caveat.

Pricing

Substack is freemium. The Free to start plan is free and has no platform fees, tiers, or contracts. That makes it a low-commitment way to publish and build an audience, but enabling paid subscriptions changes the economics: Substack keeps 10% of subscription revenue, and Stripe charges payment processing fees. The free plan is therefore not fee-free once a creator earns through subscriptions.

Platforms

Substack supports web, Android, and iOS, giving creators and readers access across browsers and mobile devices.

Who it's for

Substack fits writers, journalists, podcasters, video creators, experts, educators, and media companies that want publishing, audience discovery, and reader-supported monetization together. A creator focused primarily on minimizing fees from paid subscriptions may prefer a different model.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple publishing formats, discovery tools, and monetization options work in one flow, reducing the need to split a publication across separate services.
Pros: Creators own their intellectual property and mailing list and can export data, preserving meaningful control over their work and audience.
Cons: Paid subscriptions incur a 10% Substack share plus Stripe processing fees, which reduces creator revenue.
Cons: Substack does not guarantee complete security of personal information, a relevant limitation for publishers managing audience data.

Alternatives

For a membership website with a free tier and a paid plan starting at 18.00 USD per month, consider Appy Pie Membership Website Builder. Patreon is another freemium option for creators considering a membership platform; its Standard pricing is described as 10% of the amount charged, and it supports up to 100 hours per month of video hosting for paying fans.

Raklet may suit organizations that want contact and email allowances specified on a free tier: it includes 100 contacts, one admin seat, and 1,250 free emails per month. Paid Memberships Pro is a free, open-source alternative for those who want to run membership software on as many self-hosted sites as desired.

memberplanet offers a Basic plan with unlimited members and admins, while its Essentials plan is 50.00 USD per month and includes a 2% platform fee and 1,000 campaign emails. Ghost is a paid alternative with a Starter plan at 18.00 USD per month, billed yearly, for solo blogs and newsletters; it includes 1,000 members and one staff user.

Systeme.io is worth considering for a free plan with explicit marketing and publishing allowances, including 2,000 contacts, three sales funnels, one course, one blog, and one custom domain. ARMember is another freemium option for self-hosted membership sites.

Verdict

Choose Substack if you want to publish across formats, discover readers, and build a reader-supported publication without an upfront platform fee. Its strongest reason to look elsewhere is the 10% share of paid subscription revenue plus Stripe processing fees, which can make other membership or publishing models more suitable as paid readership grows.
