Overview

mpv handles a wide range of media formats, codecs, and subtitle types, including MKV and MP4. Network playback, 4K video, and hardware acceleration make it more versatile than a player limited to local, standard-definition files. The trade-off is that there is no full GUI: a small on-screen controller covers basic playback, while the design assumes comfort with command-line operation.

Key features

Broad playback support: Wide format, audio and video codec, and subtitle support reduces compatibility friction when playing varied media. Network playback adds flexibility, while 4K support suits high-resolution displays.
Video rendering controls: OpenGL, Vulkan, and D3D11 output supports scaling, color management, frame timing, interpolation, and HDR. These options give viewers who care about rendering more room to tune playback; they are less valuable if a simple point-and-click player is the priority.
Hardware decoding: mpv can use most hardware decoding APIs across its platforms, and decoding can be enabled at runtime. That gives users control over when to use hardware acceleration rather than making it an all-or-nothing setup choice.
Scripting and embedding: User scripts can extend the player substantially, and a C API lets developers integrate mpv as a library. This is a strong fit for customization and software integration, but the same scripting and playback-control capabilities carry security implications in untrusted environments.
Active development: Development includes refactoring, cleanup, and new features, and users can request features or submit patches. Only the latest stable release receives security updates, so staying current matters.

Pricing

mpv is free and open source. Its Free and open source plan is free and includes a command-line media player with wide media-format, codec, and subtitle support. There is no paid tier to unlock these core capabilities, making it a straightforward choice for individuals and developers who can work with its interface.

Platforms

mpv supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. System requirements include Windows 10 1607 or later, macOS 10.15 or later, or a reasonably current Linux distribution, along with a capable CPU and GPU. Installation guidance covers packages, Android, and source builds; many available binaries are third-party builds. For source builds, the project recommends helper scripts that produce a static build with FFmpeg, libplacebo, and libass.

Who it's for

mpv is a good choice for technically comfortable viewers who want broad media support and control over video output, and for developers who need scripting or a C API for integration. It is a poor fit for first-timers who want a full graphical interface for browsing and controlling playback. It is also a desktop player, not software designed for untrusted environments: its support for user scripts, subprocesses, and IPC playback control calls for caution when handling untrusted content or setups.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad format, codec, and subtitle support, plus network and 4K playback, covers varied viewing needs.
Pro: Extensive video-output options and runtime hardware-decoding control suit users who want to adjust playback behavior.
Pro: Scripting and an embeddable C API make mpv adaptable for power users and application developers.
Con: The lack of a full GUI makes ordinary point-and-click playback less approachable.
Con: Security updates go only to the latest stable release, and the player is not designed for untrusted environments.

Alternatives

VLC media player is a free alternative for readers who want a player available across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Infuse is worth considering for iOS or macOS users who prefer a freemium option; its Pro monthly plan is 1.99 USD per month, billed monthly, with a free 7-day trial and added video formats plus high-resolution Dolby and DTS-HD audio.

SMPlayer, MPlayer, 5KPlayer, MediaPortal, DivX Player, and KMPlayer are other media-player options to compare.

Verdict

Choose mpv if you want a free player with broad media support, tunable video output, scripting, or application integration. Its command-line focus is the main reason to look elsewhere if you expect a complete graphical experience; keep to the latest stable release for security updates, and avoid treating it as software for untrusted environments.
