Overview

Hiya Spam Blocker is a consumer app for identifying callers and reducing unwanted calls. It is best suited to people who want caller ID and spam alerts on a mobile phone, with paid options for more active screening and lookup. Its value depends on platform, carrier, and region, and it cannot catch every new or spoofed number.

Hiya says its threat detection flags known fraud tactics in real time, while voice analysis can alert users to a suspected deepfake voice during a call. These are useful warnings, not a guarantee: new or spoofed spam numbers may not be flagged initially, and withheld numbers cannot be individually identified or blocked.

Key features

Caller identification and alerts: The free version identifies known businesses and spam numbers and sends spam and fraud alerts. That gives occasional callers a useful first screen, but identification of individual non-business numbers is a Premium feature and is unavailable in Europe.
Blocking and spoof protection: Free users get basic blocking and spoof-protection settings; Premium adds automatic call blocking. The upgrade is more consequential for people who want calls screened without manually managing settings, though new or spoofed numbers can still evade detection at first.
Reverse lookup and enhanced caller ID: Premium adds reverse phone lookup and enhanced caller ID, helping users investigate unfamiliar numbers. Individual non-business number identification remains unavailable in Europe.
Call Screener: Premium includes Call Screener, but it works only in the US and Canada on supported carriers. Android also requires one active SIM, so this feature is not a dependable reason to subscribe outside those conditions.
Platform-specific tools: Hiya lists automated call screening for iOS and visual voicemail for Android. Feature differences mean buyers should check that the particular Premium tool they want is offered on their device.
Privacy and security: Hiya says it does not retain or use user data to train its AI models. It also says it conducts regular third-party penetration tests and applies least privilege, defense in depth, and separation of duties. A Help Center covers setup, troubleshooting, subscriptions, features, and account privacy.

Pricing

Hiya uses a freemium model with a free plan and a 7-day trial. Basic is free and includes caller ID, basic call blocking, and spam-number reporting. It is the sensible starting point for people who mainly want alerts and manual controls; it gives up Premium's reverse lookup, enhanced caller ID, automatic blocking, Call Screener, and more frequent spam updates on iPhone.

Premium — monthly costs 3.99 USD per month, billed $3.99 if billed monthly. Premium — annual costs 24.00 USD per year, billed $24 per year. Both include reverse phone lookup, premium caller ID, spoofed call protection, call screening, and visual voicemail. The annual plan costs less over a year than twelve monthly payments, but either plan is a poor fit if the features you need are unavailable on your platform, carrier, or in your region.

Platforms

Hiya supports Android and iOS, but the feature mix varies between them. Automated call screening is listed for iOS, while visual voicemail is listed for Android. Call Screener requires Premium and supported carriers in the US or Canada; Android users also need one active SIM. Individual non-business number identification is unavailable in Europe.

Who it's for

Hiya is a practical fit for mobile users who want caller identification, spam and fraud alerts, and a free way to report or block unwanted numbers. Premium is aimed at people who will use reverse lookup or automatic screening and meet the relevant regional, carrier, and device requirements. It is less suitable for anyone who needs reliable identification of withheld calls or expects every newly appearing spam number to be caught.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free plan combines caller ID for known businesses and spam numbers with fraud alerts and basic blocking, so users can start without paying.
Pros: Premium adds reverse lookup, enhanced caller ID, automatic blocking, and call screening for users who need more than alerts.
Pros: Hiya says it does not use user data to train its AI models and describes regular third-party penetration testing and layered security practices.
Cons: Features vary by platform, and Call Screener is restricted by country, carrier, and—in Android's case—an active-SIM requirement.
Cons: Individual non-business number identification is both a Premium feature and unavailable in Europe.
Cons: New or spoofed spam numbers may initially go undetected, while withheld numbers cannot be individually identified or blocked.

Alternatives

For a broader shortlist of options, see Spam Call Blocking Apps. Consider RoboKiller if its free plan's global blacklist, spam notifications, weekly insights, and Spam Patrol better match the protection you want. Whoscall may suit users who want free phone-number, URL, and screenshot checks alongside caller ID and scam reports.

Getcontact is another freemium option for Android, iOS, and web. Choose YouMail instead if its free cloud messages, voicemail-to-text quota, and unlimited known-spammer blocking are a closer fit. CallApp is an alternative freemium caller ID and spam-blocking app.

RealCall offers a 7-day free period before a $4.49/month subscription, which may appeal to someone comparing a timed trial with Hiya's free tier. T-Mobile customers with a qualifying service and capable device can consider T-Mobile Scam Shield, whose basic plan has no extra cost. Verizon Content Transfer is another free mobile app option.

Verdict

Choose Hiya if you want free caller ID, spam and fraud alerts, and basic blocking, or if you will use Premium lookup and screening within its platform and regional limits. Its strongest case is the combination of a usable free tier and more active paid tools. Look elsewhere if you need dependable identification of withheld or newly spoofed numbers, or if the Premium feature you want is not supported where you live, by your carrier, or on your device.
