Overview

SunVox pairs a pattern-based sequencer with built-in synthesizer and effect modules that can be connected into complex arrangements. That puts sound design and sequencing in the same environment, a useful fit for electronic composition shaped around patterns and custom signal paths. Generative effects can randomize notes or controller values and apply probability, offering a way to create variation in rhythms and melodies.

Projects store their composition elements in a single file, helping preserve playback without tracking down old plugin versions. That portability comes with a clear trade-off: SunVox does not support third-party plugins, so users cannot extend it with external instruments and effects.

Key features

SunVox supports multitrack editing and MIDI sequencing, with MIDI input and output as well as import and export. It can import XM and MOD files. Sample support covers 16-, 24- and 32-bit WAV, AIFF, OGG, MP3, FLAC and XI, while multitrack WAV export provides a way to deliver separate tracks.

Supported audio systems include ASIO, DirectSound, MME, ALSA, OSS, JACK, Audiobus and IAA. On iOS, SunVox is also available as an Audio Unit instrument and effect plugin. The maker describes its mobile apps as full-fledged versions with nearly identical sound to desktop releases, making the same composition approach available across device types.

A JavaScript player can run SunVox compositions in a modern browser with WebAssembly support. Developers can also use the free cross-platform SunVox library to build the engine into their own applications, including paid games.

Pricing

SunVox uses a freemium model. The “SunVox (most platforms)” plan is free and covers the free offering on most platforms; Android and iOS are exceptions. Desktop is described as free on most platforms, with no price listed. The Android and iOS plans also have no listed price, so their costs should be confirmed before purchase.

The Android plan includes the modular synthesizer and tracker, MIDI import and export, multitrack WAV export, and mic or line recording. The iOS plan includes those first three capabilities and an Audio Unit Extension. The free desktop option suits users who want to compose without a listed purchase cost; mobile users should check the purchasing route and terms before relying on either app.

There is a practical caveat for Android buyers: Google does not allow app purchases from developers registered in Russia. SunVox directs users to email for workarounds. Previous buyers can download APK files, which verify the purchase with Google on first launch.

Platforms

Supported platforms include Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and Windows CE. The maker also provides a browser-based player, which requires a modern browser with WebAssembly support. Minimum requirements include Windows 2000 on x86 or Windows 7 on x86_64, macOS 10.13, Android 4.1 and iOS 12.

Email and a user forum are the listed support routes. Android's purchasing restriction may make the mobile version less straightforward to obtain for some buyers, despite the maker's stated workaround.

Who it's for

SunVox is a strong fit for electronic musicians drawn to tracker sequencing, modular sound design, generative patterns and projects that remain portable as a single file. MIDI and broad sample-format support also make it useful for working with existing material. It is a poor fit for producers who rely on third-party plugins or need a conventional plugin-centered workflow.

Pros and cons

Pros: Built-in modular instruments and effects combine sound design with tracker sequencing, rather than requiring separate tools for those tasks.
Pros: MIDI import and export, XM and MOD import, broad sample support and multitrack WAV export give composers several ways to move material into and out of projects.
Pros: A single-file project format helps preserve compositions without depending on old plugin versions.
Cons: No third-party plugin support limits users who depend on external instruments and effects.
Cons: Android and iOS have separate plans without listed prices, and Android purchases face a restriction tied to the developer's registration in Russia.

Alternatives

For a different tracker-focused option, MilkyTracker is free and supports Linux, macOS and Windows. DefleMask is another free-plan choice across desktop and mobile platforms, with its listed paid plan at 14.99 USD per one-time purchase; choose it if that price and platform range suit your needs. LMMS is free and open source for Windows, macOS and Linux, making it an option for desktop users seeking that model.

GarageBand is free on Mac, iPhone and iPad, with up to 255 tracks on Mac and 32 on iPhone and iPad. Reason offers a free plan and free trial on macOS and Windows; choose it if you want to consider that DAW and rack-device option. Pro Tools has a free plan on macOS and Windows, with its Intro plan capped at up to eight audio, instrument and MIDI tracks.

Cakewalk Sonar offers a free Windows tier with one Arranger Track and limited ProChannel modules and BandLab Sounds access. Bitwig Studio is a paid option with a free trial for Linux, macOS and Windows; pick it if those terms and platform coverage fit better. Readers comparing broader categories can also browse Game Music Software, Digital Audio Workstations and Audio Editing Software.

Verdict

Choose SunVox if you want tracker-based electronic composition with modular sound design, generative pattern effects and a portable project format, especially if you value a free option on most platforms. Look elsewhere if third-party plugins are central to your workflow, or verify mobile pricing and Android purchasing access before committing.
