Overview

In the web app, choose from more than 21 color filters, then fine-tune the result with descriptions or keywords. That gives you more ways to guide a colorization than a single automatic pass, though the free preview is watermarked and resized to 500×500 pixels. It is useful for exploring results, not judging a full-resolution finished image.

Palette supports images up to 4K resolution and 10MB per file. Uploaded files are securely processed and deleted shortly after results are provided. Users retain ownership of images and videos created with the service and may use them commercially without restrictions.

Key features

Prompt controls: API users can automate prompts, write custom prompts, supply reference images, and generate up to 120 prompts for one image. This is the more flexible route for developers or workflows that need variations; it is more than most occasional users will need.
Batch processing: Batch processing is supported, and Palette says a simple script can colorize over 1 million images per day. That claim makes the API worth considering for high-volume pipelines, though it does not replace the web app for people handling a few photos at a time.
Video frames: The beta Video API supports SD, Full-HD, and 4K video-frame colorization. Its beta label makes it a less settled choice for a dependable production workflow.
Integrations: Palette documents connections with iPhone photos, Google Drive, Dropbox, and other photo apps. A Windows desktop application from Covenant uses Palette’s colorization engine. Palette’s API platform has moved to RapidAPI, a relevant setup consideration for developers.
Support: Palette provides an FAQ and a contact-us link through its website.

Pricing

The free “Try it for free” plan is free and includes one free trial credit and unlimited color previews. Those previews are watermarked and resized to 500×500 pixels, so the plan is for trying the effect rather than producing unrestricted full-size files.

“Pay once” costs 49.00 USD per once, billed as a one-time payment. It includes 75 credits, supports images up to 5000×5000 pixels, is available for 2 years, and includes limited ads. This fits occasional users who want a larger export without a recurring bill, but the finite credit pool and two-year availability make it a poor choice for sustained high-volume use.

“Subscribe” costs 72.00 USD per year, billed $6/month = $72 year. It provides 480 credits per year, supports images up to 5000×5000 pixels, and refreshes credits monthly or yearly, with rollover up to five times the monthly plan amount. It suits regular users who can make use of recurring credits; the yearly total and rollover cap still require some planning. The free plan and one-time option avoid a subscription, while giving up the subscriber’s larger recurring credit allowance.

Platforms

Palette is available on the web and Windows, and offers an API. Its integrations extend workflows to iPhone photos, Google Drive, Dropbox, and other photo apps; the API platform is on RapidAPI. The Video API is in beta.

Who it's for

Palette is a strong fit for people colorizing archival or personal photos who want to compare filters and refine outcomes, and for developers building batch or API workflows. Its prompt options and bulk capacity are especially relevant to larger projects. It is less compelling for someone who only needs occasional, unrestricted exports but does not want to pay: the free previews are watermarked and small. Readers prioritizing an Android or iOS app should consider alternatives with those platforms.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 21 web filters plus description and keyword adjustments give users several ways to direct an image’s colors.
Pro: API prompts, reference images, batch processing, and the stated capacity of over 1 million images per day suit automation and high-volume work.
Pro: Commercial use is unrestricted, and users retain ownership of created images and videos.
Con: Free previews carry a watermark and are limited to 500×500 pixels, so they cannot stand in for a clean full-size export.
Con: Paid plans are credit-based; the one-time plan expires after 2 years, while the subscription renews yearly and caps rollover.
Con: The Video API is beta, which makes it a less certain option for production use.

Verdict

Choose Palette if you want more control than a one-filter colorizer offers, or need API and batch workflows alongside a web editor. Its prompt tools, integrations, and commercial-use terms make it particularly suitable for developers and serious photo projects. Look elsewhere if you need unrestricted full-size free exports, a non-beta video workflow, or a mobile app; Palette’s free previews and credit-based paid plans are meaningful constraints.
