Overview

HumHub brings communication, collaboration, and knowledge sharing into one platform. It is aimed at company intranets, knowledge bases, project hubs, and customer or partner communities, from small teams and nonprofits to larger organizations. Self-hosting gives an organization control of its own infrastructure, while managed SaaS runs on European servers. That choice is meaningful: teams wanting to retain their data environment can host it themselves, while those preferring hosted service can opt for SaaS.

Key features

Personalized dashboards, activity streams, configurable notifications, granular permissions, full-text search, file management, and social interactions give teams a shared place for updates and information. Permissions and private spaces help separate access by group, while event hosting and moderation tools extend its usefulness to community settings.

More than 80 optional modules let organizations shape the platform around their needs. The catalog includes News, Messenger, Calendar, LDAP, SAML SSO, surveys, and translation tools; listed integrations also include OnlyOffice, Collabora Online, and a RESTful API. This breadth is a strength for organizations with varied requirements, but it also means choosing and configuring modules is part of getting the right setup.

HumHub is responsive on smartphones, tablets, and desktops, with Android and iOS apps as well as web access. Organizations hosting on-premise keep data in their own environment. The maker says its SaaS uses European servers, is ISO 27001-certified, and is GDPR-compliant.

Pricing

The Community Edition is free under the AGPLv3 license and self-hosted on the organization's own servers. It includes access to the Module Marketplace and free upgrades, with support through the community and GitHub. It is the clearest fit for teams able to operate the software themselves; it does not include the premium support and service commitments of paid editions.

The Professional Edition is 144.00 EUR per month, billed monthly. The displayed indicative price covers up to 100 users with SaaS hosting and no onboarding. It includes premium email/helpdesk support, all updates and upgrades including security patches, prioritized bug fixing, and long-term maintenance of the latest two major releases. That package suits organizations wanting hosted HumHub and a defined support path within the stated user limit.

The Enterprise Edition has custom pricing. It includes a dedicated hosting cluster, a 99.5% uptime SLA, a dedicated Customer Success Manager, a custom contract, DPA and security review, and multi-site or multi-tenant deployments. It is aimed at organizations that need those service commitments or deployment arrangements; networks with 1,000 or more users require a custom quote. Enterprise response times are stated in hours.

Platforms

HumHub is available on the web and through Android and iOS apps. The API and self-hosted options extend its reach beyond a browser service, while its responsive design supports use across desktop, tablet, and phone screens.

Who it's for

HumHub is a strong candidate for organizations that want an intranet, knowledge base, project hub, or community with configurable spaces and optional integrations. It particularly suits teams that value a choice of hosting model or need to keep data on their own infrastructure. Organizations that need hands-off hosting, premium support, or an uptime commitment should compare the paid editions against their user count and service needs.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 80 optional modules and integrations support a wide range of intranet and community setups.
Pros: Self-hosting or European-hosted SaaS gives organizations a choice about operating responsibilities and data environment.
Pros: Professional includes security updates, prioritized bug fixing, and maintenance of the latest two major releases.
Cons: Community Edition support depends on community and GitHub, rather than premium email/helpdesk service.
Cons: The Professional price is an indicative SaaS price for up to 100 users and excludes onboarding, so it is not a universal quote.
Cons: Enterprise pricing is custom, and networks of 1,000 or more users require a custom quote.

Alternatives

For a broader shortlist, compare employee intranet software, social networking software, online community platforms, community platforms, and team collaboration software.

Appspace Signage is an alternative with a free plan for one compatible device, two Premium Users, up to two admins, and 5GB storage and monthly bandwidth.
MangoApps may suit organizations seeking a paid communications and intranet plan, starting at 9.00 USD per month from 200 employees.
Axero is another paid alternative with a free trial and a Standard plan covering workspaces and groups, communication tools, content management, notifications, task management, and gamification.
Blink may suit buyers seeking a paid Core plan at 4.50 USD per month per user, with internal communications, real-time collaboration, and a knowledge hub.
Jalios Intranet is another paid intranet option, with pricing dependent on product and employee count.
eXo Platform is a paid alternative with Silver and Gold plans, including per-user storage and space allocations.
KenCube Social Intranet offers paid editions by non-binding quote.
MyHub Intranet may suit organizations seeking an annual-billed Core plan at 3.50 USD per user per month, with a 50-user minimum.

Verdict

Choose HumHub if your organization wants a flexible intranet or community platform, values its broad module catalog, and wants to control its hosting model. Look elsewhere if you need a predictable enterprise quote or a fully defined service commitment without custom pricing; its strongest paid support and uptime terms sit in editions whose costs depend on the organization.
