Overview

Photo RAW combines RAW processing, layers, effects, photo management, and export. It browses files in their existing locations and supports tagging, albums, stacking, and AI-powered keywording. That can spare photographers from splitting library organization and editing across separate applications. Batch editing, layers, and masking also serve both repeated adjustments and selective work. The trade-off is scope: photographers who only need a RAW developer may not need this wider workflow.

Key features

Its AI tools include NoNoise AI, Resize AI, Generative Erase, Sky Swap AI, Restore AI, and Brilliance AI. Super Select AI, subject and background masks, and AI depth masks support targeted changes. Together, these tools make the application more than a basic RAW converter, though Restore AI is exclusive to Photo RAW MAX and runs in the cloud. ON1 says submitted photos are used only for the requested restoration, not to train AI models or improve datasets.

Optional integrations include Photoshop CC, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom Classic, Apple Photos, and Affinity Photo; MAX adds plugin compatibility for Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. This makes Photo RAW easier to consider alongside an existing editing setup, while plugin compatibility is an edition-specific reason to compare MAX rather than assume every version includes it.

Restore AI access also depends on how you pay: perpetual MAX licenses include unlimited restorations for one year, while subscribers retain access while their subscription is active. That distinction matters to anyone choosing MAX primarily for restoration.

Pricing

Photo RAW 2027 and Photo RAW MAX 2027 have custom pricing. The standard edition allows installation on up to two computers; MAX allows three. The ON1 Photo RAW MAX plan includes 200 GB of Cloud Sync and three computers, while ON1 Photo Studio includes 1 TB and five computers. Both have custom pricing. These plans suit different storage and device needs, but compare those allowances with the subscription before choosing.

The ON1 Photo RAW MAX Subscription trial is a billed 30-day free trial, then $7.99/month. It includes the latest Photo RAW MAX, plugin support, and 200 GB of cloud sync storage. Subscriptions allow installation on up to five computers depending on plan. The product page advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee, and there is no free plan; the trial is the way to try it before paying.

For a perpetual license, the computer allowance is fixed by edition, while subscription allowances can reach five and cloud storage varies by plan. Consider those limits alongside the ongoing monthly charge and the subscription-dependent Restore AI access.

Platforms

Photo RAW 2026.5 is available for Windows and Mac. The listed requirements are macOS 13 or later, or Windows 11 on x86 or ARM, so older systems are not a fit. The broader platform listing also includes Android, iOS, and extension, but the desktop application’s stated system requirements are the practical starting point for buyers.

MAX subscription includes 200 GB of Cloud Sync for syncing photos across computers, mobile devices, and tablets. Cloud sync is useful for carrying a library across devices, but it is tied to plan allowances rather than an unrestricted inclusion. ON1 also offers support, free training videos, and monthly live webinars with its educators, a useful learning path for newcomers as well as experienced photographers.

Who it's for

ON1 describes Photo RAW as an all-in-one editor for hobbyists, working professionals, and commercial studios. Hobbyists can benefit from organization and editing in one application; professionals may value the broad toolkit, batch processing, and MAX plugin support. It is less compelling for someone who wants only free RAW development or does not need the additional management and editing tools.

Pros and cons

Pros: RAW processing, organization, layers, effects, and export share one workflow, with tagging, albums, stacking, and AI keywording for library management.
Pros: Batch editing, AI tools, and targeted masks cover a wide range of editing needs in the same application.
Pros: Cloud Sync and computer allowances scale across plans, including mobile-device syncing on the MAX subscription.
Cons: No free plan, and several plans use custom pricing, so comparing total cost requires checking the offer that fits your needs.
Cons: Restore AI is limited to MAX, processes photos in the cloud, and its perpetual-license unlimited restorations last one year.
Cons: The desktop requirements rule out macOS versions before 13 and Windows versions before 11.

Alternatives

Adobe Lightroom is worth considering if a free plan or its 1 TB cloud storage plan is a better fit; its listed plans also include 250 monthly generative credits on Lightroom. Photomator suits Apple-device users looking for a paid alternative, with a $7.99 monthly subscription covering Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Vision Pro.

RawTherapee is a free, GPLv3 option across Linux, macOS, and Windows, but its free plan lacks digital asset management, printing, and uploading features. Hasselblad Phocus is another free RAW-processing option for PC and Mac. ART and darktable are free, open-source RAW-processing choices for Linux, macOS, and Windows; dcraw is free for all uses on Linux and Windows.

Nitro is an alternative for those seeking a $99.99 one-time purchase covering macOS and iOS, with future updates included and taxes excluded.

Verdict

ON1 Photo RAW is a strong choice for photographers who want RAW development, library organization, and a broad set of editing tools in one desktop application. Its main draw is the joined-up workflow, with masking, batch editing, and AI tools extending it beyond basic conversion. Look elsewhere if you need a free RAW developer, or decide against it if your system misses the stated requirements or the edition, computer, cloud, and Restore AI terms do not fit your setup.
