Overview

ProGet brings package feeds and Docker containers into one repository, with both self-hosted and cloud deployment options. Support for 22 formats makes it relevant to mixed-language teams rather than only those using one package ecosystem. It can cache packages locally, route them through approval workflows, detect licenses, and block noncompliant packages—useful controls when teams need a consistent policy before dependencies enter a build.

Container controls extend beyond storage: ProGet can scan vulnerable packages inside images and help ensure only approved images reach production. Fine-grained feed access and retention rules add governance over who can retrieve artifacts and how long they remain available.

Key features

Package and container management

Supported formats include NuGet, npm, PyPI, Conda, Maven, Ruby Gems, Chocolatey, PowerShell/DSC, RPM/Yum, Debian/apt, and Alpine/APK. Upstream proxying and local caching can reduce reliance on direct access to external package sources, while connectors aggregate feeds from ProGet, NuGet.org, Azure DevOps Packages, and Artifactory. This range is valuable for teams consolidating repositories, but may be unnecessary for a group centered on a single registry.

ProGet can create private Docker registries and manage container artifacts alongside packages. Its approval and vulnerability controls are particularly relevant to teams that want to gate production images rather than treat a registry as storage alone.

Security, delivery, and operations

ProGet integrates with nearly any CI/CD tool and provides a CLI and HTTP API for identifying components and publishing SBOMs. Inedo says its Security Labs maintains a vulnerability database and dedicates 10% of resources to cybersecurity research. LDAP and SAML support, load balancing, high availability, and feed replication support larger or more controlled deployments; replication can also contribute to disaster recovery.

Asset Directories can store or replicate assets across S3, Google Cloud, Azure, local storage, and the cloud. Windows installation is managed through Inedo Hub; Linux hosting uses Docker, and cloud VMs or containers are supported. The Linux installation guide recommends at least 2 vCPU and 2 GB RAM for the container, while ProGet itself uses less than 1 GB of disk space. Engineer-led forum support is available, with private tickets for paid users and professional services for training, maintenance, and custom scripts or plug-ins.

Pricing

ProGet uses a freemium model. The Free Edition costs 0.00 USD per free and permits commercial use, with unlimited feeds for private packages and Docker. Its limited security and compliance features make it a better fit for basic repository needs than for teams that depend on stronger governance.

Basic costs 2395.00 USD per year, billed $2,395/year, and targets small teams with basic security needs. It retains unlimited users and feeds, but licensing is annual per server, and test or development installations require separate licenses. That per-server structure matters when planning more than one environment.

Cloud Edition costs 4895.00 USD per year, starting from $4,895/yr. It adds managed services, proactive monitoring, 20TB bandwidth, and 400GB storage, making it the option for teams that prefer managed operations and can work within those stated allowances.

Enterprise Essentials costs 11995.00 USD per year, billed $11,995/year, and is aimed at organizations seeking enterprise-level security, protection, and compliance features. ISV Edition also costs 11995.00 USD per year, starting from $11,995/yr; its customer download center and licensed-product focus suit software vendors whose own team will maintain it. Enterprise Complete costs 29995.00 USD per year, starting from $29,995/year, and includes multiple licenses, production and sandbox use, and dedicated support. Edge Edition costs 59995.00 USD per year, starting at $59,995/yr, with ProGet Enterprise features, scalable pricing, edge nodes, and dashboards. These higher tiers make sense when their specific operating model or support scope is needed; otherwise, they are a substantial step up from Basic. A free trial is also available.

Platforms

ProGet supports API, Linux, self-hosted, web, and Windows environments, with cloud and self-hosted deployment. Linux hosting is provided through Docker, while Windows installation is managed by Inedo Hub. The deployment flexibility helps teams fit it to existing infrastructure, though Linux container hosting requires resources beyond the software's own disk footprint.

Who it's for

ProGet suits small teams through enterprises that manage packages and containers across multiple ecosystems and want approvals, vulnerability checks, license detection, and controlled feed access in the same system. It is also a strong candidate where CI/CD integration, SSO via SAML, high availability, replication, or external asset storage matter. A team seeking only a basic image repository, or one unwilling to license each server annually, should compare narrower options.

Pros and cons

Broad package and container coverage: Support for 22 formats and private Docker registries can consolidate artifact handling across teams.
Useful governance controls: Approval workflows, vulnerability scanning, license detection, and fine-grained access help enforce policies before packages and images reach production.
Flexible deployment and storage: Self-hosted or cloud deployment, replication, and multiple Asset Directory backends accommodate varied infrastructure.
Free commercial use has a trade-off: Unlimited feeds are useful, but reduced security and compliance features limit its fit for governance-heavy environments.
Licensing can add up across environments: Annual per-server licensing and separate test or development licenses raise the cost of multi-server setups.

Alternatives

JFrog Container Registry is worth considering for a free self-managed registry focused on Docker, OCI, Helm, Helm OCI, and Generic formats, particularly if Xray is not required.

8gears Container Registry may suit individuals seeking a free-forever option with 1 GB storage, unlimited private repositories, and community support; teams needing its Enterprise edition should request custom pricing.

Chainguard Registry offers a free images plan capped at five images per organization, a more focused choice for organizations whose needs fit that allowance.

Docker Desktop may be a better fit for users seeking a broader desktop-oriented bundle: its free Personal plan includes Docker Desktop, Docker Engine and Kubernetes, Docker Hub, Docker Scout, and Docker Debug, with Pro at 9.00 USD per month.

KakaoCloud Container Registry offers 30 GiB free outbound traffic, then charges by GiB—90 won/GiB through 10 TiB and 80 won/GiB from that point, excluding VAT—so it is an option for readers comparing usage-based traffic costs.

Quay is a free Apache 2-licensed open-source community distribution, appropriate for teams prepared to provide a database and reliable image storage.

Satama Container Registry has a free-of-charge option limited to use cases meeting CSC’s policy; other users should contact its Service Desk.

STACKIT Compute Engine is a paid cloud compute option rather than a direct registry comparison.

Verdict

ProGet is a strong choice for teams that need one controlled home for diverse packages and container images, especially when approvals, vulnerability checks, and compliance controls are central to delivery. Its broad ecosystem support and deployment flexibility are compelling, but the Free Edition's security limits and annual per-server licensing make it less attractive for simple registry needs or multi-environment deployments with tight budgets.
