Overview

Railsr combines wallets and accounts, debit, prepaid, credit and virtual cards, transfers and rewards. Its APIs are designed to put these services inside a brand’s digital journey while keeping Railsr behind the scenes. The platform also brings close to 100 integrations together under one API and commercial agreement, a useful proposition for businesses that would otherwise have to coordinate multiple connections.

The commercial and regulated relationships are separate: customers contract with Railsr for technology services and its wholly owned subsidiary PayrNet for regulated services. Railsr identifies itself as the trading name of Embedded Finance Ltd, which acquired PayrNet Ltd in March 2023. PayrNet holds a UK electronic money institution licence, number 900594, and lists Visa and Mastercard principal issuing licences for the UK and Europe, UK Faster Payments and Bacs direct participation, indirect SEPA membership, and SUPE grade SWIFT membership. Prospective customers should account for the two-party arrangement when assessing the service.

Railsr says it cannot onboard new agents or distributors without prior written FCA consent. That makes the platform unsuitable for a business whose proposed route to market depends on either role unless it can satisfy that condition.

Key features

Embedded finance API: Accounts, wallets, several card types, transfers and rewards give product teams a broad set of capabilities to build into a customer experience. A single API and commercial agreement across close to 100 integrations can reduce the number of separate connections to manage.
Play Sandbox API: A fully functional coding environment using fake money lets developers build against the platform without using real funds. The separate Live Sandbox plan uses real money but carries account, value and transaction restrictions.
Financial infrastructure: Card issuing, embedded accounts, KYC/AML tools and a ledger support a range of embedded finance programmes. The regulated services sit with PayrNet, rather than under the Railsr technology contract.
Customer support: Existing customers can log in to the service portal to raise a support ticket.

Pricing

Railsr offers a free plan and custom pricing for its live API tiers. The free Live Sandbox API is free for two months. It provides a real-money sandbox, with restrictions on accounts, value and transactions; it is a time-limited way to explore a live environment, not an unrestricted production plan. The Play Sandbox API is described separately as a fake-money coding platform.

Launch: Custom pricing. It provides a live API restricted to one country or region, making it the narrower option for a geographically focused launch.
Prototype: Custom pricing. It provides a live API but restricts virtual cards and end-user numbers, so it is a better fit for a constrained early-stage build than a programme that needs those capabilities without limits.
Scale: Custom pricing. This enterprise live API tier enables products, usage and countries, making it the tier to consider when a programme needs broader scope.

The live tiers have no published price, so businesses should compare the custom quote with their intended product mix, usage and country coverage before choosing.

Platforms

Railsr supports API and web access. Its supported regions include the UK, Europe, France, Lithuania, Poland and Malaysia. The country and product restrictions on individual plans still matter: broad regional support does not mean every live tier enables every market.

Who it's for

Railsr is a strong fit for fintechs and established brands, including retailers and sports clubs, that want to embed financial services in a digital product and can work with separate technology and regulated-service contracts. The sandbox is useful to teams developing against the API; the live tiers can suit programmes ranging from a one-region launch to an enterprise deployment.

It is a weaker fit for businesses that need straightforward, publicly priced live plans or whose distribution depends on agents or distributors. Those teams should resolve both the commercial terms and onboarding eligibility before committing to an implementation.

Pros and cons

Pro: Accounts, wallets, multiple card types, transfers and rewards sit within one embedded finance proposition, giving product teams room to build beyond a single payment use case.
Pro: Close to 100 integrations are packaged behind one API and commercial agreement, which can simplify a multi-service integration.
Pro: A functional fake-money sandbox gives developers a place to write code before using real funds.
Con: Live plan pricing is custom, making costs harder to compare before a sales conversation.
Con: Launch, Prototype and Scale differ in geographic and product access, so the lower-scope options may not suit programmes needing broader reach or unrestricted virtual cards and end-user numbers.
Con: Regulated services require a PayrNet contract alongside the Railsr technology relationship, and agents or distributors face an explicit onboarding restriction.

Alternatives

Compare banking-as-a-service platforms if you want to assess a wider set of providers before settling on an embedded finance partner.

Swan Cards is worth comparing if you want a free sandbox with unlimited users and fake accounts, cards and payments; its Sandbox is free, while Swan on demand is 2990.
Stripe Treasury is another API and web option to compare if its free Treasury plan’s no-minimum, no-monthly-fee terms and included ACH funding fit your needs; wire funding is $2.00 per wire.
Unit is an alternative platform to consider for a card programme, with actual card pricing, shipping and order minimums dependent on programme and design choices.
Vodeno Cloud Platform is another paid platform with Android, API, iOS and web support.
Paynetics Card Issuing is worth considering if a paid, customisable Visa or Mastercard programme with physical and virtual cards is the priority.
Column is another paid API and web option.
Dock is another paid API and web option.
Modulr is another option if you prefer published monthly plans: Bronze costs 30.00 GBP per month and includes 80 payments, with each extra payment costing £0.80 and card payments unlimited.

Verdict

Choose Railsr if you are a fintech or brand building embedded financial services and value a broad API-based toolkit, a functional sandbox and a single integration model. Its main attraction is the range of capabilities gathered behind one platform; its main drawback is that live pricing and access vary by tier, while regulated services involve a separate PayrNet contract. Businesses that need transparent live pricing or rely on agent and distributor onboarding should look elsewhere or confirm eligibility first.
