Overview

ShapeDiver hosts Grasshopper files in the cloud and embeds the resulting tools in websites or other applications. That makes it a practical bridge between a specialist parametric-design workflow and customers who only need an interactive configurator. Keeping the original Grasshopper code private is a meaningful advantage for agencies, manufacturers and engineering teams protecting proprietary models.

A free account supplies 50 monthly credits, and the 14-day trial unlocks all platform features with up to 60 seconds of computation time without requiring a card. Those options are useful for prototyping, but production use depends on paid quotas, and unused monthly credits expire rather than carrying forward.

Key features

APIs and SDKs let developers build custom applications around ShapeDiver instead of using only an embedded browser interface. The Business tier specifically includes TypeScript, Python and .NET SDKs plus backend and platform APIs, making it the more credible choice when configuration is part of a larger product or service.

Listed integrations cover Shopify, WooCommerce, iJewel3D, Speckle, Autodesk Forma and VIKTOR.ai. That range connects configurators with commerce, collaboration and engineering workflows, although the value depends on whether your stack matches those integrations. ShapeDiver says it supports more than 40 Grasshopper plugins; plan-based availability and limits mean plugin-heavy models should be checked against the intended tier before commitment.

Security documentation describes SOC 2 Type 2 verification, with the report supplied through its Trust Center. Account, model and computation data are stored on AWS and encrypted in transit and at rest. Enterprise customers can use private-server solutions and select a server location, but ShapeDiver does not provide on-premises deployment.

Pricing

The freemium model is useful for learning and small proofs of concept. Free accounts include 50 monthly credits, with documentation, tutorials, an FAQ, support forum and community catch-ups. Credits reset monthly, do not roll over, and extra usage is billed separately, so unpredictable demand can raise costs.

Startup — €199.00 per month

Billed from €199/month on an annual plan, Startup provides 2,000 monthly credits, up to 30 seconds of computation, two seats, forum support and limited onboarding. It is aimed at companies under €1 million in annual revenue launching non-critical applications. The restricted computation time, small team allowance and forum-based support make it a sensible first paid tier, not a strong fit for core production infrastructure or long-running models.

Business — €499.00 per month

Billed from €499/month on an annual plan, Business raises the allowance to 10,000 monthly credits and 60 seconds per computation, with five seats, backend and platform APIs, and email support. It is positioned for companies making ShapeDiver a core product component. The higher quota and developer access justify the jump for integrated applications, but excess credits remain separately billable.

Enterprise — custom pricing

Enterprise adds custom deployments, a private server system, custom server location, unlimited seats, single sign-on and a service-level agreement. It is the appropriate route for organisations needing governance, scale or private infrastructure, while the lack of a published price requires a sales-led purchase.

Platforms

ShapeDiver supports API, macOS, web and Windows environments, with embedded deployment and 3D visual configuration. The browser and API focus suits cross-platform delivery; teams requiring self-hosted, on-premises operation should look elsewhere.

Who it's for

Choose ShapeDiver when you already have Grasshopper expertise and need to expose configurable products or design tools through a website, commerce system or custom application without handing out model code. Startup suits lower-revenue organisations with non-critical launches; Business fits teams making the service part of a core product; Enterprise is for private infrastructure, SSO and contractual service commitments.

Pros and cons

Pros

Grasshopper code stays private: customers can use a design tool without receiving the underlying model.
Developer reach: APIs, SDKs and Business backend access support bespoke applications.
Broad ecosystem: commerce, design and engineering integrations plus 40-plus plugin support create multiple implementation paths.
Clear security posture: SOC 2 Type 2 verification and AWS encryption address common enterprise requirements.

Cons

Quota economics: credits expire monthly and overages are billed separately.
Tier restrictions: computation time, seats, support and plugin access vary materially by plan.
No on-premises option: private servers are an Enterprise facility, not a local installation.

Alternatives

Alter Product is a lower-cost freemium option whose Personal plan costs €14.99 per month and focuses on saved designer and 3D-generator projects plus mockup and print-ready exports.

3DBAE offers free-to-start Android, iOS, web and Windows access; its Hobby plan is free forever with 100 MB storage and one project, making it preferable for smaller, asset-limited experiments.

Expivi is a freemium configurator platform with Android, iOS, web and API support.

Roomle suits teams wanting a defined viewer licence, with a €170 monthly Level 1 plan covering 150 product uploads and 120,000 annual views.

Angle 3D Configurator is a paid web option at $39 per month for up to 10 products and Shopify variants.

Maxameter targets industrial deployments at 4,500 SEK monthly under a standard 12-month term after implementation.

Zea Configurators uses custom pricing based on users, active Hubs and requested functionality.

Twikit is a paid platform spanning mobile, web and API deployments, with pricing handled through a demo or sales contact.

Verdict

ShapeDiver is a strong choice for Grasshopper-based businesses that need secure, embedded configurators and programmable delivery without exposing model code. Its APIs, integrations and enterprise controls are compelling, but monthly credit rules, plan-dependent plugin access and the lack of on-premises deployment are decisive reasons to choose another platform when costs or infrastructure control matter more.
