Overview

Into Film+ is a browser-based film and learning-resource library for UK schools and youth settings. It suits educators who want curriculum-linked viewing for pupils aged 5–19 and can satisfy the screening-licence rules. Its free catalogue and clip tools are useful, but access depends on the institution’s eligibility and licensed location.

Key features

The service brings films, shorts, documentaries and TV programmes together in a catalogue of hundreds of titles, with curriculum-linked resources aimed at learning outcomes. That focus makes it a better fit for lesson planning than an all-purpose entertainment service; schools seeking a broad, unstructured video library may not need its education-specific framing.

Highlights let users save scenes or short segments for later playback, and playlists can gather highlights from different films. This can help a teacher arrange material around a lesson instead of relying on full-length viewing. Playlists are in open beta, however, so they are best treated as a developing convenience rather than a dependable core workflow. Downloads are not available, ruling out offline playback.

Subtitles or closed captions are offered where possible, but audio description is not currently available. That is a material limitation for settings where audio description is required.

Pricing

Both plans are free, but each requires a valid Public Video Screening Licence. The standard Into Film+ plan is free for UK state schools, colleges and youth settings, with access restricted to the location registered on the licence. Filmbankmedia sells the required licence for £112.50+VAT annually, so the service is not cost-free for an organization that does not already hold one.

Into Film+ Premium is also free, but only for English state schools funded by the Department for Education with a valid PVS Licence. It provides an extended catalogue of 600+ titles and permits access outside the registered location. Schools meeting those conditions get the broader catalogue and more flexible location access; other institutions cannot use this plan and should consider the standard service if eligible.

Platforms

Into Film+ runs through the Into Film website on computers, smartphones and tablets with a modern browser. The latest Chrome, Firefox and Edge are supported; Internet Explorer 11 and Safari are not. Mobile access therefore depends on using a supported browser rather than a dedicated app. Filmbankmedia is the service’s principal content, licensing and streaming technology provider.

Into Film says it follows the Data Protection Act 2018 and EU General Data Protection Regulation principles and uses appropriate security measures. It provides an Into Film+ Help Centre and lists 0330 313 7600 for urgent general enquiries.

Who it's for

This is aimed at UK educators working with pupils aged 5–19, especially English state schools that qualify for Premium. The standard plan also covers UK state schools, colleges and youth settings, provided they have a valid PVS Licence and can use the registered viewing location. It is a poor fit for organizations needing downloads, Safari support or audio description.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free service plans provide access to curriculum-linked films and learning resources, with Premium extending the catalogue to 600+ titles for eligible English state schools.
Pros: Saved highlights and playlists can organize selected scenes for lesson use, while Premium allows viewing outside the licence-registered location.
Cons: Both plans require a PVS Licence, which costs £112.50+VAT annually when purchased from Filmbankmedia.
Cons: Standard access is tied to the registered location; downloads and audio description are unavailable, and playlists remain in open beta.
Cons: Safari and Internet Explorer 11 are unsupported, narrowing browser choices for some schools.

Alternatives

Browse the Educational Video Libraries list to compare more options. Choose ClickView if Android or iOS access matters, or if a free teacher account with a limited monthly stream allocation better suits your needs. Gil Hedley Integral Anatomy is a free web option when the named anatomy video series and talks are the priority rather than a school-focused general catalogue. Consider Hopster if you want a paid service with a free trial and Android or iOS access.

PBS LearningMedia is another free web-based option for PreK–12 educators and students, with a free account required for all features. Choose Bloomsbury Video Library if you prefer a paid service with a free trial and Android or iOS access. BrainPOP is a paid family option with a free trial and plans for children in grades K–8. For single-title or collection streaming licences with periods ranging from one week to the life of a file, consider Docuseek. Digital Theatre+ offers institutional subscriptions by quote.

Verdict

Into Film+ is a strong choice for eligible UK schools that want curriculum-oriented viewing and tools to organize clips without a subscription fee. Its main drawback is that a valid PVS Licence remains essential, while standard viewing is location-bound; schools needing offline playback, audio description or broader browser support should look elsewhere.
