Overview

jamovi is an open-source statistics application that pairs point-and-click analysis with a view of the R syntax behind it. It is a strong fit for students, researchers, and analysts who want to work without coding but still value a reproducible record of their analyses. Its free desktop edition is the clearest proposition; browser access adds flexibility, while longer sessions and larger datasets require a paid cloud tier.

Key features

Statistical tests, regression models, and Bayesian analysis cover several core needs in one application. The spreadsheet-style workflow—drag variables into an analysis, set options, and see results update—keeps routine analysis accessible to people who do not write code. That convenience does not shut out more technical users: jamovi is powered by R and shows the exact R syntax behind analyses.

Import support for SPSS (.sav), SAS, Stata, CSV, and Excel files reduces the need to convert common datasets before starting. Data, analyses, and results are saved together in a shareable, reproducible file, making it easier to pass work along without separating conclusions from their analytical setup. Cloud includes the full jamovi module library and can connect to OneDrive to open and save jamovi files.

The desktop application works offline after installation, an important advantage for users with unreliable connectivity or who prefer not to work in a browser. Cloud runs without installation or setup and works on modern browsers, Chromebooks, lab computers, tablets, and other devices. That makes it practical for shared or managed equipment, though the free guest sessions do not include queue skipping, unlimited session length, longer idle timeouts, or larger datasets.

Pricing

jamovi is free and open source, with separate desktop and cloud choices. Desktop is free, is free forever, and works completely offline after installation. It suits individuals and classrooms able to install software; its trade-off is that browser-based access is not part of this plan.

Guest is free and requires no credit card. It provides browser-based, point-and-click analyses powered by R and the full jamovi module library, making it the simplest way to start without installing anything. It is a more constrained option than paid cloud access: guest sessions lack queue skipping, unlimited sessions, longer idle timeouts, and larger datasets.

Cloud Guest is free and provides browser access without installation or a credit card. It is suitable for occasional use across devices, but users who need larger datasets or longer, uninterrupted sessions should consider Priority. Priority is for students and researchers; pricing varies by region. It offers always-available access, unlimited session length, a longer idle timeout, and larger datasets.

Teams has custom pricing for groups and institutions. It adds group and classroom subscriptions, centrally managed accounts, private cloud hosting, and on-premise deployment in beta. That makes it the relevant choice for organizations managing access across a cohort, rather than individuals looking for a low-cost personal plan.

Platforms

jamovi supports web, Windows, macOS, and Linux, with both cloud and desktop deployment. Desktop use is fully offline after installation; cloud use requires no setup and extends to tablets, Chromebooks, lab computers, and other devices with modern browsers. The distinction matters: desktop is the dependable no-cost option for offline work, while cloud is better for access from varied devices.

Who it's for

jamovi is well suited to students and researchers who need statistical analysis without taking on a coding workflow, as well as experienced users who want to inspect the R syntax that produces their results. Its import formats and single reproducible file also make it useful for collaborative academic work. It is less compelling for cloud users whose work regularly needs larger datasets or long sessions unless they are prepared to choose Priority; institutions needing centralized administration should look at Teams.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free, offline desktop application avoids both subscription costs and internet dependence.
Pros: Point-and-click analysis and visible R syntax serve both newcomers and users who want to understand the code behind their work.
Pros: Common research data imports and a shareable file containing data, analyses, and results support continuity and reproducibility.
Cons: Free cloud guest access lacks longer sessions and support for larger datasets, which can interrupt or constrain sustained analysis.
Cons: Priority pricing varies by region and Teams requires a custom quote, so organizations and regular cloud users cannot compare a single standard price.

Alternatives

EViews is a freemium option with a free plan and trial; its listed Academic Single-User License is 700.00 USD per month and requires current academic affiliation. Consider it if that academic license and its macOS or Windows availability fit your needs.
Stata is a paid option with a free plan and trial. Its Stata/BE Prof+ plan is 175.00 USD per year for faculty and staff at accredited, degree-granting universities; consider it if that annual faculty/staff plan fits your circumstances.
LatentGOLD is freemium, offers a free plan and trial, and runs on Windows. Its listed Standard Single User plan is 795.00 EUR per year; consider it if a Windows-only option with that annual plan suits you.
SAS/STAT is a paid option with a free trial and supports web, self-hosted, and desktop platforms. Consider it if those deployment choices suit your needs; pricing is available by contacting SAS.
BlueSky Statistics is freemium with a free plan and trial on Windows and macOS. Consider it if you want to compare another no-cost statistics and data science application.
JASP is entirely free, with no trial, for 64-bit Linux, macOS, and Windows systems. Consider it if you want a free desktop alternative and meet its 4 GB free disk space and 4 GB RAM minimum requirements.
GraphPad Prism is a paid Windows and macOS option with a free trial. Its Annual Student plan is 142.00 USD per year; consider it if you qualify for student pricing.
StatPlus is a paid option with a free plan and trial across iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. Consider it if you need those platforms and a permanent commercial license with no annual fee.

Verdict

Choose jamovi if you want credible statistical analysis without writing code, with a free offline desktop application and R syntax available when you need it. Its strongest reason to choose it is that combination of accessibility and reproducibility at no desktop cost. Look elsewhere if your cloud work depends on larger datasets or long sessions and paid Priority does not suit your budget, or if your institution needs a different administrative arrangement.
