Overview

OpenRFID Middleware is an MIT-licensed integration layer for connecting RFID readers to enterprise applications. It is best suited to technical teams linking mixed reader hardware with ERPs, warehouse systems or cloud APIs. Its broad protocol and data-handling options are compelling, but deployment depends on a compatible .NET build target and teams must account for the lack of releases or packages.

Key features

Reader plugins span LLRP, Impinj Octane, Zebra FX, Identium and Alien, as well as TCP/UDP sockets, serial connections and MQTT. That range makes the middleware a sensible fit when an integration has to accommodate different reader types; it is less compelling for buyers seeking a turnkey, packaged reader-management product.

Filtering tools include sliding-window and shift-based deduplication, RSSI thresholds, antenna masking and EPC pattern rules. These controls let teams reduce duplicate or unwanted reads before forwarding them, which can help keep upstream applications focused on useful events. Dispatch supports HTTP GET, POST, PUT and PATCH with customizable headers and Liquid or Handlebars templates. JSON, form-data, XML and CSV payloads, along with WebSockets and MQTT, give integrators several ways to match receiving systems. That flexibility comes with configuration work rather than a single fixed integration path.

A persistent SQLite WAL queue retains tags during network outages and retransmits them when connectivity returns. Automatic reader reconnection and exponential backoff add resilience when connections drop. For operations teams, a web dashboard, live tag telemetry, diagnostics, WebSocket logs and an OpenAPI/Swagger management API provide visibility and control. API key authentication can be enabled with the ApiKey parameter, requiring an X-API-Key header; custom authorization tokens and static keys in HTTP headers are also supported.

The deployment guide covers local .NET CLI and Docker Compose setups, with Docker optional. The documented prerequisite is the .NET 10.0 SDK or a .NET 8.0+ compatible build target, a practical constraint for teams whose infrastructure does not support those targets. The project is maintained by RFID Software India Private Limited and is licensed under MIT.

Pricing

OpenRFID Middleware costs 0.00 USD per free under its open-source MIT plan. There is no paid tier described; the free plan includes the middleware rather than a stated scan or asset allowance. Read-event analytics, movement history and API access are included. The absence of releases or packages may matter more to procurement and deployment planning than the price: teams should be prepared to manage the project without a published release or package channel.

Platforms

The middleware supports API, Linux, self-hosted, web and Windows environments. Local .NET CLI and Docker Compose deployment give technical teams deployment choices, although the .NET build prerequisite remains central.

Who it's for

Choose OpenRFID Middleware when you need to connect varied RFID readers to existing enterprise or cloud applications and have developers able to configure, deploy and maintain an integration layer. Its filtering and outage queue are particularly relevant where read quality and temporary network loss matter. Look elsewhere if you need a packaged product with published releases, or a solution aimed primarily at end-user asset tracking rather than middleware integration.

Pros and cons

Broad reader connectivity: Protocol plugins and socket, serial and MQTT options suit mixed hardware environments.
Control over forwarded reads: Multiple deduplication and filtering rules help prevent irrelevant tag events from reaching applications.
Outage handling: The persistent queue and automatic reconnection support continued capture through network interruptions.
Flexible integration formats: HTTP methods, templates, payload formats, WebSockets and MQTT accommodate different upstream interfaces.
Deployment qualification: The .NET prerequisite can rule it out for teams unable to support the documented build target.
Less packaged adoption: No releases or packages means teams should expect to handle more of the deployment and version-management process themselves.

Alternatives

TagMatiks is a stronger fit when you want a freemium RFID platform across mobile and web platforms, with free plans capped at 500 scans or 99 active assets for its named tiers. Choose AssetPulse if you prefer a paid platform with a free trial. Senitron Athena is another paid option with quote-based pricing. SimplyRFID WAVE suits teams looking for an iOS and web offering with a free trial; its Wave RFID Starter Kit costs 299.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with a minimum six-month agreement. Nedap iD Cloud is a paid alternative for Android, iOS, web and API environments. Omni-Ware is worth considering for teams seeking a paid, per-device subscription with a free trial. RFTrack offers paid on-premise and on-demand options for teams comparing deployment and licensing models. RTI eP360 may suit high-volume users who prefer pricing per successful asset trip, with its eP360+ plan starting at 0.01 USD per contact.

Verdict

OpenRFID Middleware is a strong choice for technically capable teams that need protocol breadth, configurable filtering and durable outage handling in an open-source RFID integration layer. Its main advantage is the control it gives over the path from reader to upstream application; its main drawback is the .NET requirement and less packaged distribution. Choose it when your team can own deployment and integration, and look elsewhere when you need a ready-packaged platform.
