Overview

SurveyMonkey is a survey platform for creating questionnaires, collecting responses and analyzing results. It is best suited to individuals and teams that need branching, branded surveys or a route to a broader respondent pool. The free plan is useful for short, low-volume work, but response limits and overage charges deserve close attention before committing.

Key features

Logic branching and custom branding give survey owners room to tailor both question paths and presentation. More than 400 templates are featured on the homepage, with 500+ expert templates in feature details; that breadth can help users get started without building every survey from scratch. The free plan allows unlimited surveys, but each can contain only 10 questions and responses are limited, making it a poor fit for longer questionnaires or dependable ongoing collection.

Response analytics support review of submitted answers, and SurveyMonkey Audience can reach more than 335 million people across 130+ countries. That panel is a meaningful option when an organization needs respondents beyond its own audience. Surveys can also accept payments through Stripe or PayPal, extending their use to paid survey workflows.

Free iOS and Android apps support survey creation and checking the latest results. Each user can register up to two devices at a time. API access is available for connecting survey processes with other software. Team plans add shared assets, user roles, permissions and consolidated billing, which are more useful for coordinated work than individual accounts. Enterprise adds enhanced governance and security, SSO, regional data centers and Zoom integration.

Pricing

SurveyMonkey uses a freemium model. Basic is free for simple surveys, forms and quizzes, with unlimited surveys, 10 questions per survey and limited responses. It is a sensible way to try short surveys, but not a high-volume option. Standard Monthly includes 1,000 responses per month; its price is custom pricing. Advantage Annual costs 39.00 USD per year, billed $468 billed annually, and includes 15,000 responses per year. Premier Annual costs 139.00 USD per year, billed $1,668 billed annually, and includes 40,000 responses per year. The higher individual tier provides substantially more annual capacity.

Team Advantage costs 30.00 USD per year, starting at 3 users and billed annually, with 50,000 responses per year. Team Premier costs 92.00 USD per year, also starting at 3 users and billed annually, with 100,000 responses per year. Both team plans charge ₹5.00 for each response beyond the response limit. Team plans make sense when shared administration and consolidated billing matter, but the minimum seat count is a poor fit for a solo buyer. Enterprise requires 5+ users, has custom response limits and custom pricing; it is aimed at organizations needing its additional security and governance controls.

Auto-renew is enabled by default on paid plans and can be turned off; doing so downgrades the account to free at the end of the billing cycle. Check response allowances and overage exposure against expected volume before choosing a tier. The stated starting price is $30/user/mo (annual).

Platforms

SurveyMonkey offers Android and iOS apps, plus API access. The free mobile apps support survey creation and checking recent results.

Who it's for

SurveyMonkey suits individuals who need short surveys, teams coordinating shared survey work, and larger organizations that need enterprise governance or a broad respondent panel. It is less compelling for users whose projects routinely exceed free limits but do not justify a paid response allowance, or for solo users considering team plans with a three-user minimum.

Pros and cons

Pro: Branching, custom branding and extensive template options support more tailored surveys than a basic fixed questionnaire.
Pro: Team collaboration features and Enterprise security options accommodate needs beyond individual survey creation.
Pro: SurveyMonkey Audience offers reach across 130+ countries for organizations seeking respondents outside their own contacts.
Con: The free plan caps surveys at 10 questions and limits responses, restricting its usefulness for sustained collection.
Con: Paid response overages cost ₹5.00 each, so unexpectedly high participation can add expense.
Con: Team plans start at three users, adding an unnecessary minimum for solo users.

Alternatives

For scholarship workflows rather than general survey creation, consider Scholarship Commons, which has a free membership for students, reviewers and recommenders and paid membership for operating organizations. SmarterSelect is a paid option with a free trial; its Create plan costs 2000.00 USD per year and includes 500 users/year, unlimited programs and 1,000 survey responses/year. Consider GO SGO as another paid option. OpenWater offers subscription-based custom pricing, with quotes based on usage needs. For finance management, Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT uses custom quotes based on organizational needs. CommunityForce is a paid awards-management platform with pricing by demo or expert discussion. Ellucian Advising is a paid option for advising. Foundant CommunitySuite provides pricing after contacting the maker about organizational needs.

Verdict

SurveyMonkey is a strong choice for individuals and organizations that need configurable surveys, analysis and a path from solo use to team or Enterprise administration. Its main advantage is the combination of branching, branding, audience access and collaboration options. Look elsewhere if response limits, overage charges or team minimums make its pricing structure a poor match for your expected volume and staffing.
